SalesThis is Not a Typo: Wrangler Sales are Up
Posted by mike on 2009/3/5 9:41:29 (408) reads

Sales numbers for February were recently released and - get ready for it - the numbers actually so some improvement. Don't get me wrong, they're still in the toilet, but they just might be floating a little bit higher.

The big news is that Chrysler increased its U.S. market share by about 1.5% to 11%. The market share came mostly at the expense of GM.

The big news for the Jeep brand is that Wrangler sales are up a full 28% compared to February, 2008.

Full sales numbers after the jump...

WranglerMan Can't Buy Jeep Wrangler with $25K Cash
Posted by mike on 2009/3/2 13:42:32 (694) reads

As much as I want to believe that this story isn't true, I have a sneaky suspicion that with as desperate as car salesmen are these days, there might just be a few bad apples willing to go to this length to make a buck.

It seems that the author of this story went online to jeep.com and priced out the exact Wrangler he wanted - the total cost came to right about $25,000. He had $2,500 in cash for a down payment and was prepared to write a check for the remainder - no financing necessary. This is where things went terribly awry:

The three of us talked for a few minutes and finally Dr. Doom presented us with a sheet of paper documenting my new vehicle. Flag-Smasher readily appeared, picked up the phone and wished us luck as he began dialing Chrysler financial; the call was abruptly cut short by my mother. Dr. Doom must have sprayed me with some kind of mind fog (new car scent, if I had to wager a guess); I was applying for a loan, the amount unknown. My mother, utilizing the common sense that I had been robbed of, asked the most simple of questions: “how much of a loan are we applying for?” The disappointment on the face of Flag-Smasher was unmistakable. Was I so anxious to get a car that I never asked for a price? Was the price of the car I so caringly “built” on the Jeep website nothing but a phony ploy to get me in the door? And then I remembered something, something I had heard many times before: Car salesmen are liars. I had simply forgotten that the website is nothing but an electronic car salesman, an e-liar. The number on that sheet of paper in Flag-Smasher’s greedy little hand, displayed in minuscule font, destroyed all faith I had in the rejuvenation of American car companies. $31,732! Didn’t the government just give Chrysler 4 billion dollars? This number shattered my dream of owning a car. I felt betrayed by Dr. Doom and decided to leave on the spot.

If you haven't guessed by now, "Dr. Doom" and "Flag-Smasher" are the saleman and finance-guy.

Find this hard to believe? Then surely you must read the entire story to fully appreciate the fact that this didn't just happen once - it happened a second time, at a completely different dealership as well. Unbelievable.

Chrysler, if you're listening, please contact this guy and do the right thing.

LibertyVery Positive Review for 2009 Liberty
Posted by mike on 2009/2/26 19:22:26 (306) reads

Larry Printz of the Grand Forks Herald really like the 2009 Liberty - it's one of the most gushing reviews we've seen to date. The worst thing Mr. Printz could find to say was that the "stiffer bolstering on the Liberty's cloth seats would be appreciated" - oooooo, burn!

The squared shoulders mirror the vehicle's handling. This is a real truck, not a suburban poseur in big boys' clothes more fit for traversing the Farm Fresh parking lot than some wooded knoll. It's a trail-rated Jeep, and for Jeep lovers, that's good news.

...snip...

The Liberty feels like the Jeep that it should be. Yes, you hear the engine when it's pressed for power. Yes, the body will lean going around corners. Yes, there's nosedive while braking. And, of course, there's some body movement over bumps.

But that's on the road. Take the Liberty off road, and you'll understand the suspension calibration. Its joyful play-in-the-dirt persona is intrinsic.

Balancing off-road agility and on-road comfort is handled without the bells and whistles of other SUVs. It works perfectly well, thank you.

Check out the entire review.

WranglerJT (Pickup) Shelved
Posted by ScramblerKen on 2009/2/22 15:58:50 (702) reads

It's probably not a surprise, but in the March 2009 Four Wheeler magazine in the Letters to the editor section they had a reply from the editor stating the current state of the JT pickup. The editor stated, "Sorry to say, in recent months we've gotten word from reliable sources inside of Chrysler that the project has been shelved for the time being." We all probably knew this, but here is documented proof from a reliable source.

With economic hard times, Jeep will likely have very little in the way of new products for the next few years (other than the 2011 Grand Cherokee). Hopefully Jeep will reconsider the JT in the future, even if it is like the LJ (2-door unlimited) to just get something new into the showrooms.

Grand Cherokee2011 Grand Cherokee Shown in Bailout Plan?
Posted by davert on 2009/2/18 6:54:27 (1077) reads

Did Chrysler just tip its hand on the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee by showing a photo (or a really good rendering) in the ginormous report it submitted to the federal government?

As part of the bailout deal, both GM and Chrysler were required to submit a viability report to the U.S. Government yesterday - buried deep on page 131 of 177 was what appears to be a photo of the upcoming vehicle - complete with very professional infomercial graphics ("but don't order yet!")

If you got a few hours to spare, you can check out the entire report yourself.

Thanks to snakesausa and Dave from allpar for giving us a heads-up.

According to their own video, the answer is a resounding "yes". We'll see what the feds think as Chrysler makes its case today to keep the lifeline coming...

LibertyJeep Liberty Pickup?

Autoblog has a story on a Liberty-based truck one-off from Beijing Auto Works.

It seems that at some point, they considered building the pickup, but then cooler heads prevailed. They recently gave their concept to the China Military Museum.

One of our readers (tip-of-the-hat to you, Lynn) sent us a link to an autobloggreen page that has the official Chrysler press release from the Washington Auto Show as well as some cool video riding around in the Wrangler ER-EV.

We were able to go for a ride in the Dodge EV and the Jeep ER-EV with Crysler's Douglas Quigley, executive of product engineering for ENVI (the Chrysler electric vehicle "start up") when we were in town last week, and you can see our video of the rides (no drives yet, sadly) after the jump.

MiscellaneousIs the Jeep Brand Cursed?
Posted by mike on 2009/2/6 7:08:10 (1241) reads

"Everything he (it) touches, withers and dies" - this line may have been from the latest James Bond movie (holy crap I loved it), but it might as well apply to the Jeep brand as well - at least according to Consumer Guide Automotive. In a deeply-disturbing-only-because-it's-true article, they talk about how any company that touches the Jeep brand inevitably dies.

Throughout its history Jeep has built unique vehicles with world-beating off-road ability, while the brand’s various corporate owners have suffered disastrous fates. Jeep has often found itself the only profitable division of an automaker on the ropes. Fiat or whichever other company might be tempted to acquire Jeep should consider that, next to the Hope Diamond or the Maltese Falcon, few enterprises have brought worse luck to their owners.

Can the curse be broken?

WranglerWrangler Named Best New Car for Off-roaders
Posted by mike on 2009/2/5 10:48:45 (583) reads

From the "wow-that's-a-really-specific-award" department, Cars.com recently named the Wrangler the "Best New Car for Off-roaders" - I wonder what the best used car for off-roaders is...

In tribute to the heritage of the Jeep brand, the 2009 Jeep Wrangler retains the body-on-frame chassis, solid front and rear axles, removable doors, fold-down windshield and most-capable drivetrains that establish it as the most capable SUV.

Whether choosing a Wrangler X, Sahara or Rubicon(R) model, Jeep Wrangler customers experience best-in-class off-road capability in a true open-air sport-utility vehicle. Jeep Wrangler does not wander from the brand's coveted core values of freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity.

With 68 years of legendary off-road prowess under the hood, the 2009 Jeep Wrangler doesn't sacrifice anything inside the cabin, offering safety and convenience features, interior space, versatility and comfort.

2009 Jeep Wrangler models add even more refinement with standard Hill Start Assist (HSA) that prevents rollback on a graded surface. In addition, available Trailer Sway Control (TSC) monitors vehicle movement relative to the intended path and activates the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) if the trailer begins to sway outside set parameters.

Why do I have the feeling that Cars.com creates these awards so that sites like mine will mention them and provide a link? They got me!
