WranglerVideo of Jeep EV in DC

One of our readers (tip-of-the-hat to you, Lynn) sent us a link to an autobloggreen page that has the official Chrysler press release from the Washington Auto Show as well as some cool video riding around in the Wrangler ER-EV.

We were able to go for a ride in the Dodge EV and the Jeep ER-EV with Crysler's Douglas Quigley, executive of product engineering for ENVI (the Chrysler electric vehicle "start up") when we were in town last week, and you can see our video of the rides (no drives yet, sadly) after the jump.

Electric vehicles are the future, but this is all just for show.
And electric vehicle on a trail in the middle of nowhere doesn’t make sense.
I think for the most part the Wrangler will have a gas version for a long time after electric vehicles are the norm.

Keep in mind though that the military is already testing versions of the PiHV...It makes PERFECT sense on the trail though...if your tranny blows, youre stuck...if a hub-mounted motor blows, you just replace the motor, that is after your 3 remaining motors get you home.

Fear not though, Internal combustion isnt going anywhere...in 2- 3 years you will begin to fuel your conventional car with ethanol AND gasoline derived from renewable resources such as Agri-waste, sawgrass, de-starched animal feed and garbage and algae...

I seriously doubt that the Wrangler EV that we see now is even close to what the final production version will be...

The production version will have hub-mounted motors, the battery will reside where the transmission and transfer case was, (there will be no driveshafts and pinions to break), and will probably sit under a massive skidplate. The battery will probably be even larger, and give a greater EV range than the prototype.

I'd like to see a Reformer Fuel Cell like the Nuvera replace the engine alltogether, but we will probably get an engine anyway...E-85 compatible of course.

Gas prices are low right now, but will probably become volatile again pretty soon. America needs the PiHV as a buffer against high gas prices, as the battery can be charged daily and daily driving can be performed using little or no gas.

As for me, I see 2 Wrangler PiHV's and a garage-roof full of solar panels in my future.

The first ENVI if ever real (fine print: post Chap 11) will be the minivan. No Jeep owner in their right mind would get the electric with that battery pack hanging lower than a set of truck-nuts. And Chrysler is smart enough to know that too. Let's hope and pray for change that Chrysler gets the Chap 11 protection they need and Jeep comes out a winner with the pure greatness that is Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and then some other "trail rated" ENVI.
