As much as I want to believe that this story isn't true, I have a sneaky suspicion that with as desperate as car salesmen are these days, there might just be a few bad apples willing to go to this length to make a buck.
It seems that the author of this story went online to jeep.com and priced out the exact Wrangler he wanted - the total cost came to right about $25,000. He had $2,500 in cash for a down payment and was prepared to write a check for the remainder - no financing necessary. This is where things went terribly awry:
The three of us talked for a few minutes and finally Dr. Doom presented us with a sheet of paper documenting my new vehicle. Flag-Smasher readily appeared, picked up the phone and wished us luck as he began dialing Chrysler financial; the call was abruptly cut short by my mother. Dr. Doom must have sprayed me with some kind of mind fog (new car scent, if I had to wager a guess); I was applying for a loan, the amount unknown. My mother, utilizing the common sense that I had been robbed of, asked the most simple of questions: “how much of a loan are we applying for?” The disappointment on the face of Flag-Smasher was unmistakable. Was I so anxious to get a car that I never asked for a price? Was the price of the car I so caringly “built” on the Jeep website nothing but a phony ploy to get me in the door? And then I remembered something, something I had heard many times before: Car salesmen are liars. I had simply forgotten that the website is nothing but an electronic car salesman, an e-liar. The number on that sheet of paper in Flag-Smasher’s greedy little hand, displayed in minuscule font, destroyed all faith I had in the rejuvenation of American car companies. $31,732! Didn’t the government just give Chrysler 4 billion dollars? This number shattered my dream of owning a car. I felt betrayed by Dr. Doom and decided to leave on the spot.
If you haven't guessed by now, "Dr. Doom" and "Flag-Smasher" are the saleman and finance-guy.
Find this hard to believe? Then surely you must read the entire story to fully appreciate the fact that this didn't just happen once - it happened a second time, at a completely different dealership as well. Unbelievable.
Chrysler, if you're listening, please contact this guy and do the right thing.

![]() This must have been some kid, because the Wordpress blog that had the post was deleted in it's entirety.
There are good and bad dealers everywhere, and the Jeep.com price is sticker. Shame on the dealer for financing something he had supposedly 100% cash for, but maybe the person didn't figure out adding tax title and fees, but there's no way there were 20+% taxes and fees on a 25k car. |

![]() Here's an easy one - if you have the money to pay for the car outright - then just order it. You'll not only get what you want exactly, but usually a lot cheaper. And - this guy is whining because the dealership wouldn't sell them what they had in stock for the price he came up with online for a model with different options? Am I missing something here? He wants them to sell their $31k Jeep for $25k because the one he built online cost that? Think they'll sell me a $48k Challenger SRT8 for $23k bc I built up a Challenger SE online for that price? The "bailout" is actually low-interest loans, not grants and they don't mean they are going to start giving away cars.

![]() The first mistake a buyer with $'s can make is to say he has the $'s to buy it outright.
One, as long as it's not 0% financing, they gonna make more money from the interest if you barrow. Your cash sale of $25K nets them less money than financing $25K. Also, if you're financing they may be able to work with you a little more on the price tag because they'll usually make back any discounts over the life of the loan. Two, dealers are gonna think, hey if you've got $25K, let's talk you into something you don't need that costs more. I mean hey, what's a few thousands dollars more than you planned on? Of course, they're then planning on you financing that extra 4, 5, 6K so they get some extra bucks coming in. Three, if you tell them you got $25K, you lost all ability to haggle. If you tell 'em that and they actually had a deal they could work out for less than $25K, I guarantee you won't see that deal. Magically, everything that you might of considered under $25K will now be $25K or more. They certainly won't come down a penny more than they have too. While I generally don't like dealerships/salesmen, I can't blame them for always looking to make as much as possible on a sale. After all, they're in business to make money, not to short change themselves and not to just give cars away. Obviously some of these dealerships take it way too far. The best thing you can do is go elsewhere so they don't get rewarded for being a bad dealership. Enough people leave and they'll either have to change or go under. |

![]() Link is down. I don't doubt he's not getting the same price as a cash buyer. At least part of the rebate is for financing through Chrysler Financial.
I was JK shopping myself until I realized the customer loyalty mailer they sent me completely lied to me. It told me I had $1500 off a new Jeep Wrangler but really it meant only new 2009 Unlimiteds even though there was nothing in the mailer specifying year or model type. The amount varied for anything else. It was only $500 for an 08 Unlimited. That's some nerve to make a loyal customer think they're getting $1500 off until they get to the dealership and find out they're getting shorted $1000 of that. I didn't believe the dealer and called the Rebate hotline myself (had to look the number up since it wasn't on the mailer) only to confirm that the dealer was correct. I would've just checked the website link they sent me but Chrysler yanked it and told me to talk to my delership for details even though the mailer's offer was over a month away from expiring. I went and bought a nice used TJ Saturday. I might never buy a new Chrylser again. |

![]() Maybe it's too early in the morning and I may still be in a fog from the weekend...but...
![]() I don't get it. I have used the www.jeep.com website MANY times over several years, and the price of every car I've fantasized & "built" (many dozens) is essentially identical to the sticker prices. With the rebate(s) and the "employee pricing" posted, it's pretty straight forward... ![]() Of course, the dealers can put their own "add-on" stickers to try to screw you for waxing & prepping it with a few doo-dads, but that's rather obvious. ![]() This guy needs to go to yet another dealer. To save frustration, I'd recommend sending an e-mail and trying to cut a deal first. It worked well for me. My experience is the prices on the website are accurate. Could the dealer have been quoting the sum total of his finance payments? Or is the dealer working the financing with sales tax, and sans rebates?? Something's wrong, and the link to the rest of the story is broken! ![]() There are dealers out here (upstate NY) who would get into a no holds barred cage match for the opportunity to sell this guy a car. ![]() I hate car dealers, but if this (young?) guy walks in with his Mom, he's looking like a lot of fresh meat. Harsh, but true. Pass the ketchup. ![]() |

![]() Oh I belive this story as it happened to me at 2 different dealerships in the DFW area back in 2005 when i was trying to buy a Rubi Unlimited. I ended up going on ebay and buying from McGonical up in Indinapolis and having it shipped to me in Texas and SAVED $5,000 doing it this way...Strange to see this going on right now when its a buyers market and car makers about to fold...a real shame!
