On-Board Welder/Alternator Welder?

On-Board Welder/Alternator Welder?
If you have no rods, coat hangers, or other.
I've seen a guy use nickles, yes the ones with Thomas Jefferson on the front.
Clamped into jumper cables, connected to a battery that's disconnected from vehicle.
He welded a broken shifter back together on a VW bus after tiring of driving around in 2nd gear.
Seemed to work.

Lots of alternators will work. I've many times taken an old 90 AMP alternator to my local rebuild shop that does starters and alternators, and the ask if I want it rebuilt with 120 AMP parts for the same price to get better output. Well heck yeah I do... So check with a shop that does that kind of work. You never know what you might be able to get out of a seemingly small alternator.

seems to me the best alts to build a welder would be one with an external regulator, you would want it independant of the primary one so you dont strand yourself while welding.
what about welding off of a battery? install a dual battery system with an isolator so when you drain one you still have one to start jeep with? anyone ever try welding with a battery? ive heard about it but never done it.
