Cracked passenger steering knuckle

Cracked passenger steering knuckle
Now I did some research.
And when I cannot get a right knuckle for my Dana 30 i might upgrade it and get Knuckles from a chevy k10.

I checked for narrow track Dana 30 but then I have to replace also everything brakes hubs etc.

And so I came up with this:... my plan B
... have it one my CJ7. And its exactly as you discribe. This is what i used. AlloyUSA inner Dana 30 chromoly shafts with 297 u-joint. Ford bronco outer stock 44 shafts. Chevy flatop knuckles. Dana 30/44 balljoints. Bronco rotors. Wagoneer calipers, caliper brackets, hubs, lockouts.

this is quite a project butat least it is an improvement also.

Just getting a Dana 44 is more expensive and I can not use any of my parts lick the locker.
What do you think. Too much??

I have a few sets of knuckles
I'll send you a PM when I get home
Should be tomorrow at some point

Posi to the rescue :chug:

What I have:
A set of Dana 30 knuckles with the tie rod hole reamed out to 5/8" to accept larger rod ends (this gets rid of the wimpy CJ TR).
A set of chevy flat top knuckles
1 left (driver side) Dana 30 knuckle.

Remember, I think he's in Germany right??

Shipping may be a pain...

Yes I noticed, thanks.
I've shipped one of those Jeep CB/radio to Germany several years ago for a FSJ owner.

Hello Posi,

thank you very much for quit a selection of spares .
I am interested in the pair of knuckles which are reamed already.

Where is the taper made, to put the tie rodends over the Knuckle or under.
And also I was looking for Tie rod ends with 5/8", i cound not find anything.
The closed thing was the 7/8 -18 thread of TJ tierodends.

What measure is 5/8", and which TRE will fit? is the the GM size?

Thanks

The knuckles are drilled out 5/8" for the M.O.R.E kit. You can install the TR over or under. You could also order the ends and make your own TR and DL.

Nice pic ! are they from a wide track Dana 30?
I cannot see the two holes for the Caliper.
I need the wide track knuckle otherwise I cannot use the brake parts from my axle.

So you drill the stock tapered hole to a straight 5/8" hole. => taper is gone.

This is sad. In germany you are only allowed to use taper at all steering parts no heim joints or something this way.

but 5/8" is 15.875 mm. My plan was drilling a 0.75" (19.05mm) hole and use the tera flex inserts with the stock TJ TRE. This way I use a taper on my steering, and it is stock at least TJ :-)
So I might drill the 5/8" hole to 0.75" and still use the inserts.
This is theory, I am not a mechanic, what do you think?

Thanks

I didn't look what axle you had other then Dana 30
Doesn't matter wide or narrow track
However, it does matter if the axle is drum or disc.
The Dana 30 knuckle set I posted is for drum brakes and will not fit your setup.
The only thing I have to offer is the chevy flat tops, if interested.
I apologize for the confusion.

Hello posi,
thanks again for the quick answer.
When I do the Dana 44 outer swop I thy to get a complete axle, maybe from a us ary truck with a Dana 44. This way I will have more than only the knuckles.
The more complete my set is the less I have to worry for to match.

I checked for flat knuckles already, but when I combine my tierod with the draglink (yStyle) I think I can use any Knuckle from a Dana 44.

Thanks again Posi .

Look for a front narrow track wagon or Cherokee 44 1974-79
Sorry I couldn't help with the knuckle.

Hello
I had a lot of luck last weekend, it was my axle weekend and I want to share the info.
I got a Dana 30 81 narrow track, but knuckles are the same as my wide track!
And because I was driving cross country I got a Dana 44 from a cherokee chief.
This is wide 65" but It looks like that only the "long side" has to be shortened.
and I got a very good price too.

So I am happy and save for the future, at least when it comes to frontaxles :-)

That is deffinitly a casting flaw . Do not try to weld it the preheating and welding will induce new stress areas in it it would probably crack during cool down period . Replace it

I replaced it and did OTK but had a lot work with the matching insert. But a good mashine shop got it done well.
