MiscellaneousMotor Trend Predicts Future Jeeps

A major auto magazine recently posted their forecast for the future of some vehicles to be produced in the next few years.

MotorTrend.com recently posted their forecast for the future of some vehicles to be produced in the next few years. In addition to the 2005 Porche 998 (350-450 hp), 2005 all-new Subaru Sport/utility wagon, and the hybird 2005 GMC Yukon, they also have some interesting things to say about future Jeeps:

2003 Jeep Wagoneer: Previously, the classic Wagoneer nameplate was predicted to return for an all-new, full-size sport/utility bearing some design elements from the Jeep Commander concept vehicle. However, changes as DaimlerChrysler have suggested that this model line slot may be filled in 2005 by a stretched version of the next-generation Grand Cherokee.

2003 Jeep Wrangler: A significant update to the TJ Wrangler will likely adapt the drivetrain and possibly the independent suspension from Liberty.

2005 Jeep Wagoneer: The classic Wagoneer nameplate may be resurrected for an extended version of the Grand Cherokee forecasted for 2005, not all-new full-size sport/utility as previously projected for 2003. The added length will permit for a third seating row. The 4.7-liter V-8 will likely provide base power, but expect a larger 5.7-liter engine to be available.

2005 Jeep Wrangler: Redesigned. Expect styling cues to draw heavily from Jeepster and Willys concepts.

After the hard-core Jeeper backlash about the Liberty using independent suspension, we can't even begin to imagine the potential backlash if DaimlerChyrsler decides to move the Wrangler to independent suspension as well.

Be sure to check out the entire article for loads of cool information.

I have to agree, this sounds like old information. Besides their take on the
Liberty before it was introduced had it looking like a smaller Grand with round
headlights, they got the headlights right.

Ford and GM take note... start developing a compact Wrangler-type vehicle with live axles, not IFS. Make it look rough and unrefined. Make it kick a** off road. You'll make a killing in the niche market that DiamlerChrysler is abandoning.

DC is so concerned about appealing to the masses that they have forgotten what makes a Jeep a Jeep. I snached up a 2001 Cherokee before they screwed that whole line over. I may not buy a Jeep again.

I think if they go IFS on the Wrangler that will be the final in the coffen for jeep and DC will have been sucessuful at screwing jeep up by making a stupid looking vehicle with IFS, so get a Wrangler while you can before DC really screws them up!

On this one........ most of the Wrangler info is way off the mark, the part about a 2003 redesign has been on their site for over a year and a half, and is way out of date, and their second claim that the future wrangler would look like the Willies, was before they knew that the Willies was going to be a product in and of itself. Another site and insiders I have heard report that model year 2004 will see a modular hard top and V6 engine, followed by a major redesign in 2005 or 2006

I agree with both of you. Just the fact that MT is stating the wrangler will be redesigned twice in a three-year period causes me to be suspecious of their information. At my cynical old age I'm inclined to wait until a vehicle is introduced as a production model rather than getting worked up over rumors in the industry and fan mags.

All of this material is outdated and has been on Motortrend for the last 2 years??? Wrangler will not use independent suspension...that fact has also been well established already.
