WranglerDiesel Wrangler Rumors Keep Coming

Diesel Wranglers, Canadian Wranglers, Wrangler Workers

One of our sources let us know that a cold weather testing facility has recently seen 4-cylinder Wranglers with 6-speed transmissions. Combine this rumor with the diesel Wrangler frame we reported on recently and things may be coming together.

Canadian Wrangler Unlimited Pricing Released

Are you Canadian? Like the new long-wheel-base Wrangler Unlimited? Then you can have one for less than 30K (Canadian). Here's a snippet from the auto123.com article:

DaimlerChrysler Canada recently announced pricing for its all-new 2004.5 Jeep TJ Unlimited. The new model, a stretched version of the venerable TJ, will be released with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $29,195.

"For those who always wanted to drive the icon of off-road vehicles but wanted more space, the legendary Jeep TJ Unlimited has taken the limit out of interior space," commented Ron Smith, Vice-President of Marketing, DaimlerChrysler Canada. "The extension of the TJ was not limited to just stretching the wheelbase. The rear seat has been repositioned, the trunk has been enlarged, and the new Sunrider soft top operates like a huge sunroof. It all adds up to more versatility, capability and comfort."

Toledo Jeep Assembly Recalling 85 Employees

WTOL-TV recently posted the "State of the City" address by the Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, Jack Ford.

In the address, we learned something we haven't heard yet - that DaimlerChrysler will be recalling 85 employees that were previously laid off from the Jeep assembly plant. Here's a snippet of the address:

In December, we received the great news that Jeep will invest $2 billion  in their new facility and in Toledo's economy.  This will result in the full recall of 85 Jeep employees. Let's thank the UAW and DaimlerChrysler for their faith in our community.

Good news indeed. You can check out the full address here.

Ive been planing in my head for some time now, a yj strech and a diesel swap. If these rumors about the diesel Unlimited hold any truth, I will have no qualms about selling the old girl i learned to drive on (10 yrs ago) and spring for the dieselUnlimited. How much sweeter if you could get a Rubi version!
Is anyone out there listing? Hello corprate think tank!!!

These are very exciting times for our Jeep community.

2003 - Rubicon is released
2004 - Unlimited is released
2005 - ???

One thing is for sure: my father and I both purchased new Jeeps in 2002 and swore we would have them indefinately. If 2005 produces a Rubicon version of the Unlimited (104"wb) and a diesel engine is an option...just let us know where to sign the papers. :)

I read on a consumersguide review place that they will be redesigning Jeep Wrangler for 2006 to make it more fuel efficient and even more affordable. Any news on this?

It seems that today's diesel engines are a lot more reliable than they were 15 years ago. With the Liberty in Europe having had the diesel for a few years already, I assume that they've worked any bugs out of them. Although I am no diesel expert and don't even know if the Wrangler will have the same diesel as the Liberty.

I really need a truck with a small bed like the HUMMER H2 SUT or H1. I want a Jeep so I hope that with a Wrangler Unlimited, that there will be a top that covers the front and rear passengers but exposes at least a small part of the bed. This is probably not possible because that cargo space is too small in the Unlimited.

Jeep please build a Dakar with an exposed truck bed. Please!

Look at the H.O. 5.9L Inline 6 Cummins turbo deisel which has an output of 600ft/lbs of torque at just 1,600 rpms that Dodge is using...

That is good to hear about the diesel. But I
have a suspicion that many people will wait until
they get actual real-life reports of how the diesel performs before springing for one. That means DC had better have it right straight out of the chute and not do it as GM did with too
many of their new diesels.

For the engine to be successful it has to be
at least fully comparable if not better than the
I-6 which delivers an unusually high amount of low end torque--just perfect for the Wrangler.

I sure hope DC does as thorough as job as possible doing side-by-side testing of the
diesel and I-6 before moving forward to
production and marketing.

They may have a real hit on their hands if they do it right. Imagine great mileage and terrific
torque on a long life engine. Sounds good.

$29,195 for the unlimited. They keep raising the price. It was around $25K. This better be the rubicon version, nobody will pay that kind of money for a base model unlimited

Hopefully, if the wrangler gets a diesel. May it get the liberty's/cherokee's VM 2.5Lcrd 141hp 253lb-ft and the VM 2.8Lcrd 160hp 295lb-ft. For the rubicon, I'd love to see the new MB V-6 3.0L 190hp 323LB-FT.

A broader line-up of engine choices would better suite different applications and probably broaden the market a little for the Wrangler. The deisel may fit the needs of those who want more torque, while the 3.7 (if they scrap the 4.0 for the next generation wrangler) and the 2.4 would suite others better.

I read an article from TheHemi.com back in September about future Hemi engines that are rumored to be under development. One engine was a V6 Hemi producing an estimated 300hp... can these rumors be substantiated? Since the 5.7 Hemi is finding its way into the WK, I wonder if a V6 Hemi can find its way as a replacement of the 4.0, rather than the 3.7?

Here is the article...
