The first 'real' photos of the Compass and Patriot prototypes are being shown. The Frankfurt Auto show is underway this week, and the vehicles will make their debut. Details are still a bit sketchy, but an article in Car Connection has some info and photos.
Some basics:
They are based on the Dodge Caliber, the Patriot is 173 inches long on a 103.7 inch wheelbase. The Patriot is listed as 'Trail Rated', and could have a 2.4 4 banger or a 2.0 liter diesel. From the writeup, the diesel might be for outside the US. The Compass is slightlly shorter and is aimed more at the 'cross-over' market.

![]() I am curious if the Compass and Patriot shown at Frankfurt were functioning models (or just mock ups). Looking at the front on photos and videos of the Patriot there is no indication of any suspension hanging below the level of the bumper. No control arms... nothing. If they are functioning models then the Patriot has some pretty remarkable ground clearance compared to it's would-be competition.

![]() At one time they were talking about these vehicles coming out in early 2006 or at least one of them. Then the 2nd one a little later in the year. Now it's sounds like maybe next year(2007 as 2008's)?? Does anyone really know what the planned release is? If they release them this Janurary they could be considered 2007's.

![]() The Patriot is nice looking to me, looks better than a Liberty. I hate the name though "Patriot" is cheesy and basically sux as a name. The Patriot looks a tad like a Cherokee and Escape hybrid, except that it indeed is more handsome than the Escape. A diesel ver. of this vehicle might not be too bad as a street runner for most folks.
The Compass (I like this name) is another story, it is ugly and will be too light duty to truly carry the Jeep name. I think it is going to begin to dilute the Jeep brand name, and so will every other "street Jeep" that follows it. But as I said once before on this site if these wimpy Jeeps sell and create profits then we have a better chance of seeing great truly trail-rated products coming down the pipe. Hopefully the Gladiator will make it....are you listening DCX? I can say for sure that I won't be buying any of the three most recent Jeep product announcments the Commander, Compass or Patriot. I'm actually smack-dab in the demographic range that DCX seeks to reach with the Commander and it does nothing for me at all. I'm am due for a truck replacement in about 1/2 - 2 yrs and am holding out for a vastly improved Wrangler/Gladiator with a high torque, small displacement diesel. Hopefully DCX sees the potential in such a product and builds it. Otherwise I'm heading over to Toyota and buying a Tacoma. |

![]() One thing I think people might be missing is the size of the Patriot. Based on the numbers listed in the article, and those that I found for the Cherokee, the Patriot is actually a little larger than the old XJ.
Cherokee Height 63.9" Width 69.4" Length:167.5" Wheelbase:101.4" Patriot Height: 65.6" Width: 69.1" Length: 173.7" Wheelbase: 103.7" |

![]() Interesting "FOTO". Not sure about the AWD being trail-rated, but would like to see a nice entry level diesel! If I were shopping for my next car, I'd make it a Jeep, and right now I'm pretty sure I'd chose a diesel Patriot over a Compass.

![]() For a few more photos, here is another link. My German is very rusty, so I'm not sure of all of the details.
It does appear the Patriot and Liberty are very close in size, so will the Patriot take away sales from the Liberty? My guess is the refersh of the Liberty for 2007 will be similar to the Dodge variant, hence the Liberty will be a bit larger. Personally, the Patriot looks alot like the Ford Escape. The Compass is a bit more distinctive, but to me does not really look very 'Jeep-ish'. I'm sure these will be good sellers, but I guess for an old-timer like me, I prefer the true off-road Jeeps like the Wrangler and old XJ (Cherokee). |
