The 2004 Grand Cherokee gets a facelift, a custom Jeep pickup makes an appearance at the SEMA show.

We've just had a spy send us some detailed information regarding the 2004 Grand Cherokee, with production to begin in January, 2003. While this will not be a complete redesign of the GC, it will feature a significant number of changes to the nameplate. Here's a rundown:

  • All new front fascia
  • GPS Navigation option
  • Two new exterior colors: Midnight Blue and Lava Red

Both the 4x2 and 4x4 Laredos will see some significant changes as well. The 4x2 will gain a "Special Edition", with a look similar to the Limited. The 4x4 Special Edition will also have a similar look of the Limited along with fog lamps, Quadra Trac II, and a 10-CD changes with the Infinity speaker package. Quadra Trac I will also be available as a no-charge option.

Changes to the Grand Cherokee Limited will include:

  • New perforated leather seats
  • New front grille appearance
  • Improved Chrome wheel option

Finally, the flagship, Grand Cherokee Overland will gain a 4x2 model with new seats, chrome tow hooks, as well as a new grille appearance.

Finally, one of our readers checked in with a report from the Specialty Equipment Market Association show (SEMA) regarding a "Jeep Brute" - here's what he had to say:

Just returned from SEMA where I viewed Jeep Brute pick-up truck. Imagine a TJ cut off just aft of the front seats and made into a pick up style cab with hard top and full doors and a small pick up bed. Along with that was a Rubicon style drive train with Dana 44's front and rear. It was all red and looked GREAT!!

Was anyone else at SEMA who saw this who may have gotten a photo or two? If so, send it to jeepnews@OneToMany.com!

The 4x2 needs tow hooks because it's going to be getting stuck often. :) I wish my mom's had 'em for when she pulls off the road into a "soft shoulder" and I have to yank her out with my XJ.

I want to know why the Overland 4x2 needs "Chrome Towhooks"? Just to look cool or what? Obviously DC still doesn't get it. With the Rubicon out and the stretched Wrangler coming I thought maybe things were going to get better.

here is my comment Some of the "Jeep " people who comment on these 2004 GC's should wait until they see and know more before commenting.Iwork for a Jeep sdealer and we order 100% 4x4's for this part of the country. Jeep offers two styles of drive. 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive choose your type. Offering 2 wheel drive on the Overland is not a disaster, just another choice. Even dealers employees have't seen the 04's up close. I expect we'll have some in the next 3 weeks.05's will be a big redo with three seats and the 5.7 HEMI.COOL

That 'Nazi' comment sounds like latent redneckery to me. (WWII has been over almost 60 years). Besides, Jeeps have had mainstream appeal for about 20 years--since the compact XJ came out. It's nothing of DC's doing..

I said nazis as in germans. Those germans at DC are taking a great quality off-road vehicle and making it available to every mall mom and their daughters.

Being SEMA, these designs *don't* represent manufacturer prototypes or concept vehicles. The Brute is cool to be sure, but is a custom job by third parties.

arg, I was hoping the Overland would maintain a 4x4 as standard equipment, afterall, it is supposed to be the most upscale Jeep. Those Nazis are pathetic.

I wonder if the pickup TJ mentioned here is the same as the Wrangler "Scrambler" or whatever it was called mentioned just a few articles back.
