Journalists Revote to give Wrangler Another Chance to be Truck of the Year

As if we can't make this story even more confusing, there's a new chapter in the Wranlger's quest to be the 2007 truck of the year.

For those of you who missed the first part of the story, while the Wrangler was one of the nominies, it didn't make the cut to be one of the 3 finalists for the North American Truck of the Year award, given out at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

Well, the lack of a spot in the finals for the Wrangler was apprantly quite a sore spot for the 49 automotive journalists who get to cast a vote for the award.

The Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7 are finalists for the 2007 North American Truck of the Year award. But they might have to slide over to make room for a fourth candidate.

The 49 automotive journalist jurors are revoting on the candidates for the truck award because one candidate -- the redesigned Jeep Wrangler -- was left off the ballot. The original voting for the award closed Dec. 6.

Jurors are being asked to revote for all candidates in the truck category. Each juror has 25 points to distribute among the candidates. The maximum possible score is 10, and only one 10 score can be awarded.

The list sure does not look like trucks to me....the automotive heads sure have messed up everything...when a truck was a truck, a car a car...now anything can just about be in any category...lol....

By the wording, it looks like they are merely requesting jurors revote and not forcing them to do so. How much you want to bet that most jurors don't bother and the Jeep is left with a pitiful score. I don't really care for strict defenitions of truck. When I lived in Texas, my defenition of truck was anything that had a Texas Truck tag on it. I moved to Georgia before the SUV craze so I'm not even sure what qualifies under that defenition. The kind of vehicle that typically wins such awards is usually not the kind of vehicle you need a truck for anyways so it's usually a poor indicator. Even if they went with some ultra-strict definition, they'd still look place things like ride quality and gas mileage over hauling capability and long term relaiblity.

Worthless, all great cars, crossovers and vehicles doing great sales and providing the perfect vehichle for some buyers, BUT NOT Trucks. Only 5 of the vehicles listed belong on the list. It is difficult enough when manufacturers and the public begin touting cross overs and "SAV" as utility but when a bunch of auto writers can't tell the difference, I loose the need to subscribe to their publicattions. Truck of the Year needs a bed and / or a 2 speed transfer case. There, now you have it, I am right and this is law. Safe holidays to all us readers here at Mike's!!! jay

To be a Sports Utility Vehicle and SUV must have some utilitarian charachteristics to seperate it from the otherwise capable AWD cars. The 2 speed transfer case is a requirement IMHO. Trucks must have a pickup bed with at least 5 feet of usable bed space (yes it can be a converted bed like the Avalanche). This excludes the H2 SUT. Even the Explorer Sport-trac (which I personally dislike) has more "usable" cargo area than the H2 SUT - so it belongs in the SUV category. I think it's great that auto manufacturers are developing more AWD systems and platforms, just don't mistake an elevated AWD station-wagon for a real truck based SUV.
