The all-new, iconic Jeep Wrangler continues to solidify its segment dominance in the marketplace and deepen its loyalty with customers. Sales of the Jeep Wrangler rose 61 percent to 8,623 units in December. December 2005 sales totaled 5,363 units.

Sales of the all-new Jeep Compass rose 36 percent month-over-month, posting sales of 5,066 units in December 2006. November 2006 sales were 3,723 units.

Mike's notes

While the sales numbers behind the Wrangler are outstanding - they are not entirely unexpected considering what we've been hearing about the extended waits for customers to get their hands on Rubicon editions. Not counting the new Compass model, Jeep sales were down across the board - with the biggest sales loss coming from the Grand Cherokee which is way down no matter how you look at it. 2006 sales were mostly down as well, with only the Wrangler showing a net gain for full year sales (neither the Commander nor the Compass have a full year's worth of sales data to compare against).

Perhaps the most interesting fact gleaned from this data is the fact that despite 2 new models to the Jeep lineup in 2006, the brand has yet to be "expanded", as Chrysler Group has touted as the reason for introducing new Jeep models. In fact, 2006 Jeeps sales are down 3% compared to 2005. Let's hope that the imminent introduction of the Patriot and rising sales from the Compass can turn that around.

I think you have to look at the Grand Cherokee and Commander as the same since they come off of the same line. In 2005 there were 230,000 WK/XK's sold and in 2006 there were 227,000 WK/XK's sold. Considering sales of larger SUV's have been flat this is not too bad. DC knew when they introduced the Commander that it would share sales with the GC to the same people. People seem to be liking the Commander a little better by looking at the sales numbers.

The XK will be getting the same 3.0L V6 Bluetec as the WK.

Thats the assumed plan. However, NO Job 1 has been scheduled yet for this so it can change.

The Grand Cherokee lost sales to the Commander (DCX knew that would happen from the start) and now both the Commander and Grand Cherokee are losing a few sales to the Wrangler Unlimited.

The Grand Cherokee should see a slight sales boost this spring when the diesel becomes available. Also, a considerable refresh of equipment (new system BUS, myGig Nav system, Sirius Streaming video HIDs, heated second row seats, trailer sway control, hill descent/ascent controls, etc.) as well as a slight visual refresh will give the model new appeal. The WK design wasn't liked quite as well as the WJ out of the gate and in the long run it hasn't proven to be as successful a vehicle as its previous generation.

The Commander will also see the above mentioned equipment upgrades in the next two years as well as the addition of a diesel engine which might be the new V8 Bluetec that is being unveiled at Detroit. It produces 290hp, 515lb/ft. Combined gas mileage numbers for the Commander would be between 25 and 27 vs. the current 16 with the HEMI.

Liberty sales will rise dramatically in 2008 with the arrival of the new upscale baby-Commander design. A possible diesel variant will most likely arrive within one year of launch. This model will steal a few sales from both the Commander and the Grand Cherokee.


The Compass sales will dip once the Patriot arrives as the Patriot is slightly less expensive and looks better with the lights on.

There will not be a huge "expansion" to the Jeep brand in sales numbers. In reality it results in giving Jeepers a few new choices when it comes time to trade in as well as attract a few new buyers.

There is a lot of data we don't have... such as is Jeep just building better vehicles that last longer, resulting in less Jeep buyers finding the need to buy a new car as often?

Also, the public is fickle and lots are going to those souped up minivans known as crossover vehicles. It is funny because everyone laughed when DCX came out with the Pacifica... the competition said who are you trying to fool, it's a minivan. Now every other company comes along and they say NO we aren't making a minivan... it's a CROSSOVER.... ummm... RIGHT
