Jeep sales figures through the month of August for the U.S. have been released, and the news isn't good. Like most other automakers, Jeep has been hit fairly hard by a slumping U.S. economy with sales of both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee showing double-digit declines when compared with last year's numbers. The all-new Liberty seems to be holding its own, with an increase of 896 Libertys sold in August when compared with July, 2001. Overall, the Jeep brand is down 14% when compared to last year. Here are the numbers: Jeep U.S. Sales Summary, Thru August 2001 Month Sales DR % Sales CYTD DR % Model Curr Yr Pr Yr Change Curr Yr Pr Yr Change Wrangler 4731 6272 -25% 47602 61829 -23% Cherokee 3996 13486 -70% 70789 94042 -25% Liberty 11458 0 0% 32506 0 0% Grand Cherokee 16381 27444 -40% 142539 184454 -23% JEEP BRAND 36566 47202 -23% 293436 340325 -14% The Grand Cheorokee remained on the top 20 best selling vehicles in the U.S., dropping one place to 14th, when compared to July. The top 5 in order are: Ford F-Series Pickup, Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Honda Accord, Ford Explorer, and Toyota Camry. In case you haven't noticed, we've implemented a new feature here on mike's totally free jeep news - the Jeep News Poll. Appearing at the top of the right-hand gutter, this is your chance to give us your opinion on a variety of Jeep-related topics. For the first poll, we're asking which of several Jeep concept vehicles you'd most like to see in production. If you've got any ideas for future Jeep News Polls - feel free to email us at jeepnews@OneToMany.com and let us know!

Its not a large as the tire cover but i've gotten more feed back from random people you would never think would even know what you are talking about. I got things that go around my license plates that says "My XJ eats Jeep Liberty's." So many people have said stuff to me in parking lots and gas stations, even at stop lights sometimes. Funny thing i just read about the KJ in the JP Magazine is that the KJ looks oddly familiar to Chevron's "Freddy Four Wheeler." Just puts eyes where the lights are and a toothy grin on the grill and you have freddy four wheeler. But on a more serious note. Of course the Liberty is going to be in the shop for all of those warranty repairs. As much as I like the ZJ and WJ grand cherokees they were always in the shop for the same reason that the KJ will be in there. The poor build quality mainly focusing on the Transmission. I have never actually read the Grands owner's manual concerning transmission fluid but i'm sure they probably say you can keep the same fluid forever and if people just would change out their fluid in the transmission they would get more than 60000 miles off of one transmission. Lets just say that the XJ is a much safer transmision because it isn't a DC parts bin transmission. Its actually a shame they didn't put it in the KJ. Sure sometimes it doesn't shift as smooth as a lexus but if you wanted it to shift smooth and silky like some euro/jap lux car you should have saved up for a payment on one of those vehicles. Of course DC says the XJ was a unrefined piece of trash that had lost its appeal, well thats funny because i also own a 97 range rover and a 95 classic range rover and those are about the most unrefined hard shifting lumberous things for how much you pay. I ended up with a 95 because when i wanted one in 93 the waiting list was 2 years long. So who says classicly designed vehicles aren't worth while or popular. Well thats about it. Another reason why they aren't selling as many KJ's as XJ's, Fleet vehicles. The XJ was a awsome fleet, police, or forest service vehicle because it was no frills can do anything for a affordable price. I can't think of anyone who would want the bubbly girly KJ with no cargo space unless you good at stacking. I wouldn't want to scratch that pretty silver dash anyways. SOLID AXLE FOREVER, Griff

I've run the 4Wheel Drive only a couple of times so far, but it is solid, responsive, and able to climb and ford and bump along pretty well. I wanted a Wrangler, but I use the vehicle to get around job sites and sometimes carry a couple of people and a couple hundred pounds of tools with me, so the Liberty is the best choice for me. I don't understand folks knocking the Liberty... if fills a market niche pretty well.

I have been buying Mopar products since 1980 but, if I were buying today I seriously doubt it would be a Chrysler, I don't know what it would be, but I don't think it would be a Chrysler product.

The rear windshield has another moniker that reads "It's a Jeep thing, and Daimler doesn't understand". I can't tell you how many wrangler and Cherokee owners are beeping, giving thumbs up and pumping their fist when they see it.
This whole KJ thing is going to bite DCX in the rear once the novelty fades off of the KJ.

The quick answer is: have the best factory standard warranty in the business, that is the most immediate statement to consumers that the builder believes in its product !!

There could be many reasons for this, but it looks like Chrysler's hope of having a new SUV that would out-sell the Cherokee, without discounts and incentives might have been a pipe dream. Cancelling the Cherokee, and it's proven track record with the buying public seems to be a blunder. Keeping both the Liberty and the Cherokee might have been a good choice after all, especially with sales of the Grand going into the tank!

Since the Liberty is now solidly established on the market.... it is hardly a "Big hit" .....it does look like a chunk of the Liberty sales have come from potential Soccer mom and Barbie Jeep ......Grand & Wrangler TJ's sales..... so all DC has accomplished is creating a vehicle that takes customers away from other vehicles in its lineup. With the backstabbing of Jeep loyalists with the creation of the Liberty, all DC has done is start the process of running the Jeep line into the ground..... I am far from the only Jeep owner who, other then my AMC JEEP CJ7, will be moving on next year! Down with DC!!!

If you add the Cherokee numbers and Liberty numbers shown, they surpassed last years numbers. It is true that the Grand Cherokee sales and Wrangler sales are down. That's probably why DC lowered there prices on those for '2002. We probably won't see the results of those decreases for at least a couple of months. Jeep dealers have not really got into selling many '2002 Grand Cherokees and Wranglers yet. We are really dealing on left over '2001 Grands and Wranglers. We have some great programs on those. Here in Minnesota we have a $3500. rebate on '2001 Grand Cherokees. And on Wranglers there is a $500. rebate, or financing as low as 1.9%. Call me to take advantage of us at (800)279-5337 or (952)890-5337. Happy Jeepin!

Is this true, its just my observation as I've been looking at Jeeps. I like the Cherokee Classic and the Wrangler for their more reliable drive train set up and 4 wheel selection. The Liberty is probably a great hauler if the package is tall, but then I just don't care for the looks.
