Autoblog has a quick article about how the Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit is being upgraded to soon build both the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee (they'll soon share a common platform).
The Commander is currently built at Jefferson North - but may not be for long:
The Durango/Aspen will evidently share a platform with the Grand Cherokee, while the absence of the soon-to-be-cancelled Commander will free up plenty of space at the Jefferson North plant for all three models, and possibly the yet-to-be-named JC49 crossover.

![]() I don't see the grandcherokee name being dropped as consumers wanted a 3rd row grand cherokee 3 years ago and got the small commander instead. The new Grand will be on the GM tahoe plattform asthe Durango and aspen..Look for styling cues from the trailhawk concept! www.allpar.com for more info

![]() We all knew this was coming. It is sort of sad to see yet another Jeep share a platform with Dodge and Chysler as that only leaves the Wrangler a totally unique Jeep vehicle. I think the Grand Cherokee will get bigger and this is my thought. Maybe they will keep the boxy styling of the Commander since the rest of the line had gone that way. And maybe they will drop the Grand Cherokee name and call the new vehicle the Commander and it will be a true 7 passenger SUV.
