SalesKelly Blue Book Ranks Jeep Brand Near Bottom in Resale Value
Posted by mike on 2007/11/14 6:14:37 (2785) reads

Kelly Blue Book released their 2009 Residual Value Analysis that ranks vehicles and their brand by resale value. The top vehicle in the SUV category was the Acura MDX, while the top overall brand was Volkswagen. The top vehicle overall was the Chevrolet Corvette.

The Jeep brand was ranked 8th from the bottom in resale value - Suzuki, Kia, and GMC were the bottom three:

This year's 2008 overall Best Brand award goes to Volkswagen. Just one year ago, Volkswagen came in second behind the manufacturer tie between Honda and Acura. This year, Volkswagen took the top spot with Acura and Honda falling in the overall brand rankings to third and fourth respectively. Coming in second for 2008 is Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value Brand winner from 2006, BMW.

Top 10 Brands: Bottom 10 Brands:
Best Resale Value 2008 Worst Resale Value 2008
VW 48.1 Suzuki 27.6
BMW 45.6 Kia 30.4
Acura 45.4 GMC 32.5
Honda 45.2 Mercury 32.5
Porsche 44.9 Dodge 32.5
Subaru 44.4 Chrysler 32.5
Lexus 43.2 Lincoln 33.3
Infiniti 43.1 Jeep 33.3
Audi 42.6 Ford 33.8
Toyota 41.4 Jaguar 34.1

Average Residual Value across the vehicle brand based on the
November/December 2007 Kelley Blue Book Official Residual Value Guide

Chrysler: The collection of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles changed little in aggregate from 2007, decreasing by 0.4 percent. Chrysler's slight decrease can be attributed to falling residuals on the Dodge Dakota, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass and Chrysler PT Cruiser. While there are no new 2008 model-year products to provide the springboard for gains, a deeper decline is offset by increases in the Dodge Charger and Dodge Caravan.

I think this is refering to the ENTIRE jeep line and not just the wrangler. I traded in my 05' Rubi Unlimited I had purchased in Dec. 04 and sold in Oct. 07 and got $18K for it but only paid $23K New....not bad if you ask me....and i got dealer invoice on the one i purchased so i think the trade value was a true value and not inflated to cover the vehicle purchase....

The good news is we own a VW, which is ranked number #1 in resale.
The bad news is we own a Jeep Commander which is near the bottom.

Jeeps, usually lose value only to gain it again 15+ years later.

Look at the cost of mint condition Grand Wagoneers, restored Willys Pickups and Willys Wagons.

Personally, I am not one who trades my vehicles every two years so residual value means little to me.

Something smells rotten here, because I recall Wrangler always rating much higher than average resale value. So, I Googled it and, in 2007, Jeep Wrangler rated #1 in residual value in the Compact SUV segment and #4 overall. See links below:
Top 10 new cars for future value: Jeep Wrangler ranks 4th...

Among domestic manufacturers, the Jeep Wrangler won the segment for Compact SUVs for the second consecutive year...

So, if the KBB numbers are correct for JEEP overall, then it's the rest of the JEEP line-up that's not carrying its residual value... Either that, or the numbers are as reliable as a Consumer Reports test drive.

Figures lie and liars figure...

LOL, I was thinking the same thing... Wranglers (and CJs, etc) hold resale value at an almost ridiculous amount. The rest of the brand however, does not do so well... and considering the relatively low sales numbers of Wranglers to other Jeeps (at least prior to the JK Unlimited, haha!), it's not that surprising that the brand overall would score poorly.

Hmmm, I thought JK's were leading the way and cannibalizing some of the Liberty sales...

Like U said, anyone in the market knows how well the "real" Jeeps hold their value! If anyone's in doubt, just look at the Collins Bros website & drool over the mint condition CJ's of yesteryear. How about a mere $55K for an all-original low mileage Scrambler? Or only $25K for a mint CJ with 50-70K on the odometer? Where'd I put that friggin' Lotto ticket?
