SalesWrangler Sales Jump 53 Percent
Posted by mike on 2004/5/3 23:00:00 (243) reads

Jeep Wrangler sales have their highest April ever.

Continuing the trend established with positive fourth quarter results for 2003 and first quarter 2004, Chrysler Group reported sales of 189,011 units for April 2004, an increase of 1 percent compared to April 2003 when 187,086 units were sold. Sales are calculated on a day-rate basis.

"Timing is everything," said Gary Dilts, Chrysler Group Senior Vice President - Sales. "Our new product blitz is well timed with the economy that is showing continued improvement. Inflation remains at an historic low, the unemployment situation continues to improve and consumer's ability to buy remains positive. The time is right to purchase a new vehicle."

Jeep(R) brand sales continue their strong ascent by posting an 11 percent improvement to 38,677 units compared to April 2003 when 34,922 units were sold. The Jeep Wrangler posted sales of 9,001 units, a 53 percent increase over the 5,888 units sold in April 2003. Jeep Liberty achieved a sales increase of 12 percent, posting sales of 14,375 units. April 2003 sales for the Jeep Liberty were 12,845 units.

I'm impressed with the jump in the Wrangler. There's nothing really new out there in Wrangler land that has been out long enough to account for the huge increase in sales. The Unlimited is only now starting to become widely available, but Wrangler sales have been on fire all year (and it's had the lowest rebate to boot).

Maybe word of mouth about the Rubicon has finally hit critical mass???

The drop in the Grand sales is not entirely surprising, with the new Grand on the way. Without a lot of money on the hood, I think a lot of people are just going to wait for the new Grand.

The Liberty seems to be percalating along... it will be interesting to see what the diesel engine does to demand across that nameplate...

Well the current YTD sales for the Grand are up 8% over the previous YTD sales... but I agree, the 2004 Grand you buy today is also the same 2004 Grand that came out in February of 2003. The small monthly sales slump could also be due to the actual introduction of the 2005 model, people that would have bought one in April are instead waiting for the 2005 model to be released in the fall.

One of the sales pitches used at Jeep dealerships is that you can get pretty much what you have in a Grand Cherokee with the Liberty but the Liberty has a more refined ride for 10K less.

So I assume that Liberty sales are taking a chunk out of Grand Cherokee sales. I haven't driven either so I can't comment on the test drive experience.

The Liberty was supposed to entice XJ owners which it has not - at least not to the satisfaction of D/C. So the Wrangler Unlimited is D/Cs latest hope of re-winning the hearts of us XJ owners. We'll see if this works. I beleive that the new Liberty Renegade will be another attempt to win the hearts of XJ owners.

DC could increase the Wrangler Unlimited sales by a few thousand or so immediately by offering a manual tranny. Seems kind of ludicrous that you can get one on a Liberty but not a Wrangler Unlimited.

I agree with “Liberty Owner” that offering a 5 speed manual in the Unlimited would help sales for the stretched Wrangler. It would also help to offer the same incentives on the Unlimited like those offered on all the other Wranglers.

I talked to a couple of dealers in the area, and the Unlimited has not been selling too well yet. They have had many ask for a 5 speed manual, and some correspondence I had with Chrysler seems to indicate the 5 speed will be offered in the 2005 model.

Dealers have also indicated sales are sluggish because no incentives and a high initial price. They also feel that since the vehicle is technically a 2004, not a 2005, some buyers are concerned the depreciation value will be hit quicker since it is a 2004 and the 2005’s arrive this fall.

For MalcomXJ and Wyatt, I doubt Jeep will produce a 4 door Unlimited since the size and price would be very close to the Liberty. I’ve driven the Unlimited, and I do like the vehicle, but I have to agree, with 2 doors, getting in and out of the back is a treat. With the regular Wrangler you expect this, since the vehicle is so small.

I still would like to see a pickup truck variant (or do you prefer SUT) off of the Unlimited, but I doubt we will see it. I also wonder if the Unlimited will become a unique model like the CJ6 and CJ8 after the new TK comes out. I’ve never heard if Jeep plans to make both the SWB and LWB versions of the Wrangler with the replacement for the Wrangler in model year 2007.

interesting to see the lower numbers on the grand.. With all the incentives out there on that vehicle... I think people are finally getting tired of that vehicle looking the same for soo long. Sure can tell it on the sales floor..

Let's hope the new grand comming out will spark alot of interest to sway people back to the grand.

I feel that the bump in Wrangler sales may reflect XJ owners opting to replace their aging XJs for a "real"(without IFS,soft ride, etc.)Jeep and before DC can castrate the Wrangler.

I agree. I went to see the Unlimited last weekend. I was impressed but not enough to give up the old XJ.

I'd reconsider if it had a 4-door too. I'd even settle for a 3-door. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the convertable is not really handy. If I did get an Unlimited, it'd have to be a 2-piece hard top or fully enclosed - like you said MalcomXJ.

I would jump on the Unlimited if it were four-door, enclosed. I'll stick with my XJ. The Unlimited is definitely a step in the right direction, but alas I think it'll prove to be the last iteration of the breed before IFS and the V6 are introduced.

i agree...people are waiting for the new grand, but they've got a few months to go - oct.! what a shame dc didn't boost production earlier, instead opting for a revamped durango which was newer that the gc, prior to it's revamping.
jeepers & jeeper i think you may be misinformed about the $$$ dc is offering on the grand, less than the durango and their beloved mini van. ironically they offer a lot off the durango and their sales are up 100% ytd! whereas jeep sales are in the tank for most of the country. dc still seemed to be very slow in helping our jeeps! too bad they are waiting another year to add the 7 passenger...i don't get their thinking...but i'm still hoplding on!
