The Jeep sales numbers for April, 2006 are in and the news is less than positive. Compared with April, 2005 sales of all Jeep models are way down. In addition, 2006 sales compared with 2005 sales through April are virtually unchanged.
Chrysler Group partially laid the blame on the exceptional sales of 2005:Against an exceptionally robust prior year comparison and in-line with overall industry performance, Chrysler Group reported U.S. sales for April 2006 of 190,095 units, a decrease of 4 percent (8 percent decrease unadjusted) over April 2005 sales of 206,546 units.

 Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat I only hope that this lights a fire under Jeep and Daimler Chrysler to come out with Bluetec engines. I think diesel and its better MPG could help Jeep immensely.

Seriously, you are like a dog with a bone. A one track mind. I mean this as a compliment. If you could somehow bend the ear of the decision makers at DC, I think you'd have them convinced in no time.
Isn't there a need for the Bluetecs to have low sulfur diesel? And what is the time frame for this type of fuel to be widely available? Does anyone know?

Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat Okay, here's the info on ULSD from someone that has to deal with it on a daily basis :) There's a progressive implementation of ULSD in progress. The EPA wants 80% of all US Diesel to be ULSD at the refineries on June 1st of this year, at delivery terminals by September 1st of this year, and at your local retail gas station by October 15th. The 100% requirement does not go into effect until 2010 due to trying to transport this spec of fuel is new, very sensitive, and can easily downgrade to non ULSD specifications, as well as it gives the owners of the old spec diesel time to empty their supplies. Remember when people wanted optional lockers?
The Bluetec technology is a series of additional components that can be added to a diesel engine. One such item is a uria cartridge which will allow the engine to pass ultra-low sulfur output standards (that's how I understand it).
The EPA and/or DOT are having issues with the fact it will require more frequent replacement than 100K miles (this is just rumor from other forums).
I beleive this, once you see the Bluetec ads for the Mercedes E320, Jeep will be next in line.

The urea-based selective catalytic reduction systems, in which the injection of the AdBlue urea solution into the pre-cleaned exhaust gas releases ammonia (NH3), causing the nitrogen oxides to be converted into nitrogen (and water) in a downstream catalytic converter, is currently the most effective established aftertreatment technique for NOx reduction, and is looked to by many truck manufacturers as the solution for their commercial diesels. There easy way to deal with the urea cartridge is to subsidize it into the price of the car (free cartridge swaps for the first 100,000 miles). Then put an alarm system that annoys the heck out of the user until they go to the dealer to get the free refill. Also, for states having annual or bi-annual emissions tests, make sure the urea cartridge is in place before giving the vehicle a passing score. |

Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat The Bluetec's would be a step in the right direction. However, DCX should look beyond just trying to reach their competitors. Hydraulic hybrid systems may be the answer (see the EPA's web site for more info).
Combining technologies like Bluetec diesel engines and hydraulic hybrids, and E85 MDS engines and hydraulic hybrids would be the ideal solution.

Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat IEEE Spectrum (International Electrical Engineering magazine) list a Ford diesel hybrid as the 1st in the 10 hi-tech cars mentioned in the magazine. Can't recall the name of the vehicle. Yes, some diesel hybrid -exotic drive train might be the future. I'd be happy with a Bluetec diesel though. I suppose it is a matter of waiting till the end of the year until ULSD fuel is widely available here in the US. Then I suppose Bluetech will be marketed in all 50 states. I hope so. I'd be happy with any light weight diesl vehicle though, but a Jeep would be my first choice.

Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat Actually Ford is the one who has worked extensively with hydraulic hybrids. Hydraulic hybrids are actually fairly simple. They are more durable and don't require all the electronics and environmentally-unfriendly batteries of Toyota and Honda's hybrids. Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat Whereas the Europeans and others have had ULSD for years , the US has been very "third world" in its diesel production including that of homegrown biodiesel. But, perhaps DC will wake up and begin to offer the north americans that same high performance diesels and transmission offerings they provide the rest of the world as ULSD and biodiesel blends become more abundant. It's interesting the VW diesels continue to sell out at the dealers and the Golf diesel, for example, gets about the same economy with far less complicated technology than the hybrids.

Re: 2006 Jeep Sales Flat The nice thing about hydraulic hybrids is that they have been paired with diesel engines and they are fairly simple (none of the complicated blue-screening gadgetery like that found in the Prius).
DCX could take their 3.2L Bluetec and pair it to a hydraulic hybrid to get V8 power numbers at 40+ mpg. This would mean cutting fuel consumption in half.
For heavier applications (Commander, Dodge RAM and Durango, Chrysler Aspen, Mercedes GL) a B20 biodiesel Bluetec version of the 4.0L Merecedes diesel could be developed and paired with the hydraulic hybrid for V10 power numbers at 35+ mpg.
DCX should concentrate on switching ALL their engines to be either E85 or B20 Bluetec. E85 should be used in passenger cars, minivans, etc. and B20 should be used in applications requiring more torque (delivery vehicles, pickups, mid & full-size SUVs, off-road vehicles)
