Finally, a head-to-head competition

How many times have we seen the "Jeep vs. Hummer" headline now? 4? 5? 6? More? And we're not just talking about this site, we're talking about all news sources. Usually, the headlines refer to capabilities, or commercials, or even lawsuits.

The Toledo Blade is running a story about how the battleground is getting set for a head-to-head matchup where it really counts: sales. With next year's smaller Hummer H3 and Jeep's larger Commander, the two brands will both have a vehicle that compete in the same vehicle class. Here's a snippet:

Both brands can trace their lineage to Willys-Overland Motor Co. and Toledo. Both got their start building military vehicles. Both have had various owners through the years, with General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG being the latest proud-but-competitive parents.

The duo was split up two decades ago, when the financially strapped American Motors Corp. sold its Humvee-making division to help fund development for products such as the venerable Toledo-made Jeep Cherokee.

And, for the first time, the two off-road legends will directly cross market paths next year, when Hummer comes down in size and price to the mid-size sport-utility vehicle market with the H3 model, and Jeep climbs back up with a larger vehicle, the Commander.

Both are expected to be priced in the $30,000s. The new Hummer, for the first time, will be made at a GM plant and the new Jeep will be made in Detroit along with the Grand Cherokee.

Everyone knows that H2s are not built on an original Hummer platform, but on a Chevy Tahoe platform. The H2 isn't even a real Hummer itself. Both brands are being diluted...

It is paramount to Jeep's heritage and future..if DCX truly cares to keep ONE Solid Axle Jeep! If it's only the Wrangler so be it. I agree with joe.

I know Im just thinking positively, but if the new TK is going to be based any styling or technology from the Rescue, then hopefully it will take the solid axles as well.

All of the new Hummer concepts (the H3, H3T) have a torsion bar-sprung front independant suspension like most other GM vehicles.

agreed... as long as jeep doesnt shy away from what makes jeeps jeeps (off road capability, not just being huge road tanks) i think that a larger model line is perfect. I get sick every time i see an H2 rolling down the street, mainly because of the 7.11 combined MPG that they get, and also because i can barely see around them. lets get some jeeps that compete directly with hummers, so people will stop driving around in pointless bohemoths!(ok, i know that the jeep will be big too, but if its at all like the rescue, then its awesome. i'd really like to see that cummins with the 600 some lbft of torque attached to that 6 speed manual in some jeep soon)

It is also interesting when you see the numbers of Jeep sales vs. Hummer sales. There is no comparision, and look at how down the H2 numbers were this year! They better hope the H3 sells because the H2 is not going to do it for them.
