SalesJeeps Sales Down 21% in October, Chrysler Says Not to Worry
Posted by mike on 2007/11/2 14:14:50 (1653) reads

Jeep sales were down 21% in October compared with October, 2006 - Chrysler LLC says not to worry, the bulk of the losses were due to planned fleet reductions. They are quick to highlight the Wrangler's 8% gain.

The Wrangler was by far the only bright spot, as the Liberty, Grand Cherokee, and Commander were down 41%, 19%, and 67%, respectively. I'm wondering if "planned fleet reductions" are to blame for all three of these declines...

Notice that the wrangler year to date sales are greater than the grand cherokee ytd sales. To my knowledge, This is the first time this has ever happened.

How many Grand Cherokees and Commanders went to fleets? I can't imagine it's that large a number. Are we really to believe two thirds of the Commanders were going to fleet buyers?

These are indeed dismal numbers, especially when you throw in the Dakota, Durango, and, yes, the NEW Dodge Caravan. (The Chrysler version did well; Dodge sank badly.)

Let's see what next month brings.

I just did a quick comparison on the jeep home page for the 2008 model year. Base liberty sport 4x4 = $22,600. Base 4 door wrangler unlimited X 4x4 = $23.240. With only a $640.00 difference in mind, I'll take a wild guess at a reason why Liberty sales are down 40%.

Right now all the Jeep 4x4s start right around $22,000 - $24,000.

While the Liberty and the Unlimited are geared towards different markets there needs to be a bigger split in pricing.

Hopefully over the next couple of years Jeep can sort this out. The Patriot 4x4 needs to be about $17,000. The Liberty and Wrangler, and Unlimited should be right around where they are now. And the next generation "full"-size Jeep(s) need to start around $27,000 or more.

Jeep needs to do away with so many options if it is going to offer more models. For example the "full"-size Jeep(s) need should come nearly fully-loaded with just things like the BackseatTV being optional.
The Patriot should not have many luxury options... no leather seating, etc.

Also, note the Liberty sales are probably down partially because of the KJ supply dwindling and the KK supply just coming up to speed.
