Under the plan, GM would acquire Chrysler (Including JEEP!), and Cerebus would acquire GMAC, which it already ownshalf of.

The fatal error that Renault made when it acquired AMC was that it marketed its cars as Renaults and not AMC's. American drivers would have embraced those cars more if the were marketed as "American" cars. I believe that the Alliance was Car of the Year for 1984, and that AMC was profitable just before Chrysler bought it in '87.

Renault did run AMC into the ground, but Mercedes also ran Chrysler into the ground.

Remember, Mercedes took over Chrysler for basically their cash reserve, and their intellectual property, namely their 2.2 and 2.4 L engines, which evolved into the "World Engine".

Jeep, of course is the only shining star of the Chrysler line, and in my opinion could run as a stand-alone company, but nonetheless, Jeep will survive no matter who it is owned by.

I pretty much hate Renault cars, nothing but trouble for my family.
I was watching a show on the DVR called "Man and Jeep" this evening, it's a good show regarding the origins and history of the Jeep. It shows that pretty much every company that ever owned Jeep has died or left the auto industry. While you think about that nugget...

is it just me but didn't Renault run American Motors into the ground and cause jeep to get bought by Chrysler in the first place. hence i think that it would be a swan song for Chrysler

I had a "crappy little" Renault Encore that lived for 16 years and 140,000+ miles. The paint was pretty much gone and all 4 corners were customized by my wife before I literally drove it to the junk yard. Engine was strong - had a brake system problem that wasn't worth fixing at that point. I wish I still had it.

While Jeep could function as a stand alone corporation, A Renault purchase of Chrysler would make sense, with or without Jeep.

The upcoming partnerships of Fullsize and Midsize pickup trucks, as well as platform sharing for soon-to-be cars such as the proposed Hornet small car, as well as the potential for sharing of competing platforms such as the Armada/Durango/Aspen, and the entire minivan market (GM is out of the minivan market in favor of Crossover SUV's), spells a Dream Wedding, in spite of the bride and grooms rocky past and previous marriage.

It has to be considred that Renault is not the same company that it was 20 or so years ago when it was AMC/Renault, and Nissan's eastern production has access to the Synergy Hybrid Drive system, and Chrysler has ongoing partnerships with Mercedes (BOO!!!), and VW.

Look at the Potential...

Seriously...Renault makes a top notch small car that has been proposed to be morphed into the Hornet, the Ram, Titan, Armada, and Durango are competing markets, and almost virtual clones, and where Jeep is tops in offroad in the U.S, the Patrol is the Eastern Pacific counterpart in off road capability.

I know they played a part in the developement of the XJ but, to this day I think they killed AMC with their crappy little French cars. I would rather see Chrysler go belly up than to see Renault get a hold of them.

Renault + Jeep/AMC - Renault = Chrysler takover + Daimler - Daimler + Renault.... Full circle, it would seem.

As U say, Mike, sales are indeed plummeting. Chrysler's stock is plummeting even faster. All the while, Chrysler is denying rumors, out of hand, that there's ANY talk of bankruptcy or selling off the brands.

And that's exactly how we know it's true.

Even though the rumor that Renault is involved may prove to be false, something seems to be brewing with Chryler's future (existence).

One way or the other the JEEP brand will survive. It's been bought & sold before... several times...
