Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May So if I'm reading this right, the 07 Wrangler is the best selling Jeep model with 54,699 sold so far this year. Compare this to the 06 Wrangler with 29591 for the entire year. I would say this is mostly due to the Unlimited becoming a 4-door. So my question to Chrysler is this: with gas hovering around $3.50 a gallon, does it make sense to offer a diesel option in your most popular Jeep model?

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May Yes. Which is why they won't.
But it's not like they tested a diesel in one of Jeeps least offroadable family suvs instead of the rugged model which then wildly outsold their expectations and then still didn't put a diesel in the model that so clearly is the place they should have started...oh yeah that is what they did.

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May I don't know the reason Jeep hasn't installed the diesel in the Wrangler--and I don't think you do, either.
One thing I can say, is they must have a reason for not doing it at this time. Maybe they are waiting for that small diesel from Cummins, that was previously talked about here on Jeep News Now.

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May I dont think it matters if they offer a diesel engine...would it be nice..YES would i buy one Probably. However, the markup for the diesel engine would negate any fuel savings at least for a while. I bet they are waiting for the new cleaner burning engine from cummins....the common rail is loud and not so fuel effiecent.
Check the liberty diesel boards on other sites and read the comments, they are not sooo happy with their MPG.
Let gas hit $5-6 a gallon and SUV sales will faulter more so than now....The new KJ is selling like the Xterra when it was released in late 99. I remember when i worked at Nissan and people were trying to outbid each other for Xterras that were not already pre-sold but on the truck to be delieverd...not seen that again....one guy paid $2K over sticker....A friend of mine sold new cars way back and then the ZJ was released and they had ONE and it was in the showroom he said a guy paid 5K over sticker....crazy.....

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May I'm with you guys regarding the need a good fuel efficient and clean diesel in a Wrangler. One thing shown by the Wrangler being the #1 seller is it shows that people want solid axles and real trail capability. If not, the Compass/Patriot would outsell it. The Patriot has 4 doos too, but so what? I looked at a patriot at the dealer and was very disappointed. The 4WD version had a lower fuel MPG rating than my 1986 Cherokee that ran the Rubicon several times and most trails at Moab . Try that in a Patriot.

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May If you think the Wrangler is selling so well because of its solid axles and off road capability, you are hanging out at places like jeepforum.com way too much.
Most Jeeps sold (including Wranglers) never go off-road. Ever. If you asked new Wrangler buyers the top 3 reasons for purchase (if answered honestly) would probably be:
1) Looks Cool 2) Convertible roof 3) I feel tough and strong driving it
I would maybe accept "Off Road capabilty that will go unused for the life of the vehicle".
There are dozens of reasons why the Patriot/Compass aren't selling higher such as: styling, options, lack of name recognition etc etc
As to MPG, a 4x4 auto Patriot gets 23mpg combined
a 1986 XJ gets 18mpg combined (~25% less) and i really doubt you are getting optium MPG on a 20 year old truck.

Re: Jeep Sales Up 20% in May I still have the window sticker for that long gone Jeep and it says 23 MPG combined! People buy Jeeps because of the presumed capability. Going off pavement is a different matter, but who cares? They bought it because it could.
