WranglerProduction Name for Compass Concept Car? Limited Edition Tomb Raider Wrangler?
Posted by mike on 2003/10/9 23:00:00 (2432) reads

A major print auto magazine says it knows what the Compass Concept vehicle will be called, are limited edition Tomb Raider Wranglers really limited?

One of our readers sent us in this quote from the most recent print issue of Motor Trend magazine regarding the Jeep Compass Concept vehicle:

Jeep will name the production version of its Compass urban offroader concept the Scout. It will appear in the 2006 model year on the same platform as the next-gen Chrysler PT Cruiser, which will be based on the Mitsubishi Lancer's foundation. Luckily for Jeep, International Harvester no longer uses the Scout name.

Can anyone confirm that "Scout" will be the official name?

Limited Edition Tomb Raider Wrangler?

A reader sent us this email about his recent purchase...

I recently purchased a Limited Edition Tomb Raider Rubicon. Apparently only 1,005 were built but I received #1,039. The dealer told me that they began with the number 1000 but this was proved wrong when I saw one on ebay numbered 0010. I can't imagine that I was douped into buying a fake, seeing how this is certainly a TR Rubicon, bought new from a 5 star dealer. I just am curious if anyone knows how jeep numbered these vehicles and how many were ACTUALLY produced. Most I've seen are softops, but my came with a hardtop only. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I would appreciate any response to this because I am left wondering.

Can anyone provide any insight into this???

If you have a Jeep and wheel it, cool.
If you have a Scout and wheel it, cool.
Heck, if you have a geo and wheel it, cool.

What I hate to see is a prissy all show, no go, solid axle 4x4
that some preppy girlyboy cant bear to get dirty.

I'll take my CJ (real jeep) anywhere, and if you can wheel,
you can follow me in your scout, bronco, geo, whatever,
and we'll have a blast. If not, well, you wont make it past
the trail head anyways.

Though I don't have the exact build numbers, there were approximately 1000 units built. They started numbering at 1 and the first 4 or 5 were pulled aside for special events.

I have been shopping for a jeep Rubicon for the last year. It just so happens I ran across a dealership in WA State that had two of the Tomb Raider editions I purchased number 570 and not because of the movie or possible collectors value, I did so because I liked the extra things added to it, lite bar, extended fender flares, extra rock protection, tube bumper, skid plate, and interior. and I liked the overall appearance. I have taken it rock crawling and off road many times and I have been very happy with my purchase. If your in the market make sure you purchase the 5 speed. The 5 speed has a much lower first gear range than the automatic version. Also a new warranty by chrysler is out covering bumber to bumper for 6 years or 100,000 miles for around 1500 dollars. Lastly, you should get an automatic 1000 knocked off the price for dealer rebate incentive, an additional 750 knocked off for prior service in the military, and additional money off for negotiation of the purchase. My Jeep Rubicon Tomb Raider Edition fully loaded with hard top came to 30,000 even. I still have not seen the movie, and could careless. The only important thing is are you happy with your purchase, and do you feel like you got a good deal.

The last thing anyone who owns a REAL Scout or Scout II wants is another pansy tailed, daddy's girl driving in another half-ass DC/jeep toy car. If I have to do it myself, I will pull the name plates off the cars so it doesn't soil the honor of the true 4x4 king..... THE IH SCOUT II.

As hard as you will try, a jeep will never be a SCOUT. [Unquote]

So in in other words you don't like girls.

Also, Jeep is still in business while the piece-of-crap rustbucket IH Scouts couldn't draw enough customers to stay in business.

I can't believe Jeep would call any of their vehicles a Scout. I'd never buy a Scout, no matter what it looked like. I hope they do make a 4 wheel drive car though.

What I don't understand is the high level of hostility being shown by some Jeep guys toward other Jeep guys. While I am not personally fond of the TR version of the Rubicon, I'm glad to see that Jeep is trying something a little different. If some people like it, great! If you want to say you don't like the TR your free to do so, but we don't need to get nasty about it. Lets not use four letter words and other profanities in describing what should be our friends, in a forum that is intended to be fun.

assinine. It's still a Jeep and a Rubicon at that, just because
it has a few cosmetic changes doesn't make it any less

Why is it just because a person has a different opinion than someone else they are "bitter". There was no bitterness in my "opinion" as this is exactly what it was. I personally don't think a tomb raider jeep will bring any more resale value of similar outfitted rubicon if both vehicles at the time of sale are in similar condition. This is too be seen and we will all get the chance as soon as resales start happening. I might be wrong but then again i might not. Those that are buying these tomb raider additions as an investment good luck to you. If purchasing them because they like the look and love the movie thats great cuz they have a stylish look to them, but unfortunately not as "tough" looking as the movie version...

I just saw one of these Tomb Raider editions at my dealership. I thought it was the nicest looking Wrangler I've come across. Wish i had paid more attention to the number, but I think it was in the 300 range. It was pricey, but if you are into Wranglers and have the cash why not? The folks who say its ugly or stupid to buy are just bitter. As far as its worth as a collectors item, who the fuck cares? i'm sure the people who bought them know the deal - they are paying extra for something a little different and unique, they are not expecting it to turn into a a high buck collectors item. If I was in the market for a new Rubicon, I'd see if my dealer was flexible on the T.R. and gladly pay a couple extra grand for something a little more special, unique and interesting.

This idea of buying a "collector" vehicle based on a movie is rediculous. Remember the Jarassic Park. They had ford explorers in one and jeep wranglers in the other. The fords could also be purchased with the same design as in the movie, i dont know if jeep offered the same. However, my point is who cares now, no one except maybe a movie buff with cash to burn. IMO they are only collector cars if they are the actual ones used in a movie not some knock off look alike. Heck the tomb raider movie knock offs are not even close to the tough movie version if they were just like that i would have purchased one. I think those that purchased this tomb raider version just were taken to the cleaners and will never recover any more than a similar outfitted rubicon without the tomb raider ugliness....

I know of a Tomb Raider Wrangler that was numbered above 1000. It was at a dealership in Washington State.

The unit was not a, "fake", but it was not clear as to how this happened. The dealership is checking with the factory. As far as making a fake goes, the cost of making one would far exceed the possible return.

Although unlikely, the error could possibly increase collector value, similar to a coin that is minted with an error.

About the Tomb Raider TJ, you could call Diamler Chrysler and have then run the VIN to see if it rolled off the assembly line as a Tomb Raider model or if the dealer made it look like one.

---Like a gang of bikers walking into the local bingo hall, what in the hell happened here? Did someone make mention of defacing the Scout name by puting it on a Jeep? Did the writer of the original story about the so-called Jeep Scout state that International no longer own the Scout name? Well, if Jeep thinks they can put Scout on their vehicle, I guess it will be soon made true that International Light Line will own a piece of Jeeps @SS. We have already done it twice, with larger import companies trying to make vehicles named Scout and they have been stopped. Think it will happen on our own soil? I highly doubt it... see you in court girlies.

---I think you boys that like to ride around in your cute little toys are doin alright with what you are. I have nothing against a little town cruising Cherokee, but out my Scout up against it off-road and you don't stand a worm's chance in a catfish's mouth. Matter o' fact, on the pavement a jeep doesn't compare to a Scout.

---This story was written about the Tomb Raider Special Edition Jeep, not a Scout idea that is gonna be shoved up your tailpipe as soon as it comes off the assembly line. So, rag on us all you want, but when you go looking for an upgrade in parts, you always seem to look our way first... funny how that is. What vehicle is better... H@@p or Scout?

---Silly boys, jeeps are for chicks

as we all know jeeps is jeeps and scouts is scouts, there is no way jeep is going to be able to build a vehicle that is worthy of being badged 'scout' that is a vehicle which is very agile off road, very strong for towing, usable as a daily driver and on top of that wont require any engine rebuilds in 25 years! jeep build a true scout 'not in a million years'

Good gawd! Is NOTHING sacred to these twits?
The "Scout" name is whispered with reverence when offroaders gather to talk about past machines that were legendary. DCX was smart enough to NOT name the KYJ the "Cherokee" in the states...because they feared that it would get their factories burned down.

Now, to name a PTCruiser variation after a legend is just plain sacrelige. What we've all known for a while. DC doesn't understand Americans. They do not "get" what makes us unique. They would have us all driving econoboxes with different skins. That's why they're about to drop to #5 position. Squarely behind Honda.

It could have been different. Keep the heritage making models alive, introduce the new models for the new blood, and see which pans out.

But those twits couldn't find their hindparts with both hands and a flashlight.

They alienate former 20 year buyers on the hope that a new line of buyers come into replace the faithful buyers, when it's been proven over and over that the new buyers are fickle....they almost never repeat with the same manufacturer like the faithful buyers did.

There have been numerous Foreign automakers in the past who have tried to buy the scout name and they have been unsuccessful. Jeep wouldn't be able to get it either.

and a few weeks ago york dodge fixed
a clicking noise that everyone thought was a
noise from the wheel bearings but it wasn't
it will only happen to a jeep with the custom
wheels that come with tomb raider
any way the noise came from the center wheel caps
being able to jiggle while turning full lock
they fixed it by wrapping the center caps with
tape and reinstall into center hole of wheel
that is what they tried after nearly changing
my axle other wise it has been a good truck
