Hello, I am changing out my transmission to a Sm465 and keeping the Dana 300 transfer case. I am looking to rebuild the Dana 300 and looking to purchase the 4:1 low gear set. Is it worth it or overkill for my project 86 CJ7 jeep.

That would depend on your plans for your Jeep. If you plan on running tuff trails then yes but it is going to be mainly a street driven with some lite trail use than no.

I won’t know for sure for a few more months if it was worth it ( I’m sure it is tho) but the JB conversion gear set is better than the terra low set it’s a one piece gear versus terra low two piece

I rebuilt my 300 with everything JB conversion sells for it, so I have their gear set, sliders 32 spline front and rear output with 1350 yokes, also the rotation ring with the extended input shaft

Also JB custom makes the best twin stick I have ever seen

All the JB customs stuff is awesome wish I could afford what you did.

I was working a lot of forced overtime back then, when I got the parts they looked so awesome I left them on the table a few weeks before I installed them

Oh ya I forgot their instructions are second to none I had a pretty thick book by the time I finished printing out their install manuals

If you are going to do trails like the Rubicon and Dusy, then it would be worth it. Keep in mind that with that kind of gear reduction, there will be a tremendous amount of torque put out and you could wipe out a gear set by pushing it too hard. On a longer trail, you will be shifting in and out of the lower range as when going thru the easy stuff. In 4th gear/low range you will be traveling quite slow to get to the next tough spot. I would advise a good shifter like the JB. When I bought mine it was before similar kits were available.

One of the best mods I ever did to my Jeep.
