1979 Jeep CJ7 TH400 Automatic 258 I6 Quadratrac Amc 20 rear & Dana 30 front, 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires. Currently a Complete Custom Rebuild in progress.

Also I own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, White, all stock with 4.0L. automatic, and police package. Best part of that is it came with leather seats! This package also has the NP242 Transfer Case, 8.25 rear end, and trailer towing package.
Got my front differential apart and cleaned up so that I could replace the inner axle seals. Looked at the gears to figure the gearing ratio to see if it matched the tab that was bolted to the differential. Tab said 3:54. Gears are 46 x 13. Which is 3:54. My question is according to CJ's post above under "Notable Posts", the chart on OEM gearing doesn't list 46 x 13. So here is a picture of the differential carrier gear. Is this not OEM? Looks like it to me, but I'm not that knowledgably on this stuff. If it is OEM, is CJ's chart wrong?:confused: Rod

Looks OEM and that's the 'birth' date to the left of DANA E.

That's what I thought. "7-11-78" It would fit for a '79 CJ7. I was just curious about the teeth count. Rod

Don't put allot of faith in AMC details.

Looks OEM to me. Maybe the chart you were looking at was for the high pinion Dana 30 which would have a 39/11 for the 3.55 gears instead of the 46/13 gear set.

I miss quoted. It was actually in the technical section of this forum. Here is the chart:

Code:
Diff Type Gear Ratio Code letter tooth count
(pinion/ring)
------------------------------------------------------
standard 2.73 D 15/41
trac-lok 2.73 DD 15/41
standard 3.31 B 13/43
trac-lok 3.31 CC 13/43
standard 3.54 A 11/39
trac-lok 3.54 AA 11/39
standard 3.73 GG 11/41
trac-lok 3.73 Q 11/41
standard 4.10 C 10/41
trac-lok 4.10 CC 10/41

Those are stock Dana gears. Jeep came with both 46-13 / 39-11 gear sets, 3.54 and 3.55 are basically the same gear set and can be run in the same Jeep. Your front is 46- 13 don't be surprised if yours rears are 39-11 (similar to the yj/tj).
