AMC 20 Differential Cover with a Drain Plug

AMC 20 Differential Cover with a Drain Plug
When I replaced the seals, I didn't see anything odd. I agree it could have been a different problem, but I couldn't find another reason.

When I refilled the diff, I used the recommended volume. No fluid dribbled out the fill hole, so I drew the conclusion of least resistance.

Regardless, I'll heed the advice given in this thread.

Thanks!

Lumpy - True, unless you have a military cover or a front Dana 44 cover from a Wagoneer (???? maybe not, but one with a Dana 44 front axle). Those are much heavier than the stock CJ cover.

The stock model 20 cover, is a somewhat thin sheet metal stamping and not a good candidate to install a drain bung.

Is it an OK candidate for a welded on, very small boss?

IMO-To easy to get mashed on the trail.
HH-The stock Dana 30 cover is more that twice as thick as the rear model 20 is.
Many times over the years. I have seen the 20 cover get smashed against the ring gear and then the ring gear chews a hole in the cover. I got pretty good at welding them up with a battery and my special jumper cables(15' of 1/0 arc-welding cables).
When I was still run'n a 30 I had this installed. Made one like it for the 44.
