My 78 has the factory ignition. I have a new brass cap and rotor coming. It has a big accel coil. For the short period of time I ran I before removing the head (broken exhaust bolt hole) to replace it ran fine. I mean it ran fine revving a little in the driveway but really nothing to cause alarm. Since this is my trail vehicle I’d love to simplify the ignition section of the engine. I see HEI for like $150 with wires. These are aftermarket of course. Is there any good reason for me to ditch all the factory ignition and just get an HEI? Would it allow me to ditch the ignition control module and wiring? I see folks mentioning swapping the amc distributor gear onto the aftermarket hei…I could do that assuming my gear fits but another thing I wouldn’t mind is finding an hei made by a real OEM. My old CJ had a Buick V6 and a Buick hei fit. Is there anything like that available for my engine? Boy I’d love to ditch that module, the coil hanging off the head, the ballast resistor, and just have a one piece unit to handle it all but I also don’t know if I want Chinese coils and such (I assume a stock gm coil can be had in the place of the China coil).
