Mahindra & Mahindra considering exporting its Scorpio SUV to the US

Autoweek recently ran an article that India's Mahindra & Mahindra is considering exporting its Scorpio SUV to the United States, perhaps by as early as 2007. The vehicle is pretty interesting and seems to be very much in the tradition of the old school Jeep Cherokee.

Another interesting fact is that Mahindra & Mahindra automotive operations began in the 1940s by manufacturing Willys Jeeps in India, and the company has also offered an Indian version of the Jeep Wrangler called the Classic, throughout India and parts of Europe in past years.

Also its Jeep heritage and rumored affordibility, possibly costing thousands less then comprable Xterras, FJ's and 4 door Wranglers, only adds to its Huss.

Actually, more interesting is that Mahindra STILL produces variants of the CJ-3B in India and one of them is ironically enough called the Commander. I'm not sure whether Daimler Chrysler or modern Federal Highway regulations would allow it, but if so I'd buy one of their modern Mahindra CJ3b versions of the Wrangler in a second if it made it to the States. Also wonder if the Scorpio will UTTERLY keep the diesel if it gets here.

While DC seems to be more interested in putting diesels in their high-priced jeeps, Mahindra could come in and address a more utilitarian market with some really affordable and truly back-to-basics jeeps.

I am just guessing that between DOT regulations and agreements they had with American Motors and Chyrsler they would not be allowed to sell the CJ style vehicles in the US. It would be cool though if they could. Don't they still make the oringinal VW Bug down in Central America or Mexico? I know they can't bring it to the states. On another note: Heading to Camp Jeep tomorrow. Will get a chance to check out the Patriot and drive a 07 Wrangler Unlimited. Will report back next week.

They stopped making the Bug in Mexico a few years back so it's currently not being produced anywhere. Mexico was actually tightening it's pollution and safety controls and that, along with a few other factors in relation to taxis, signaled the end of the Beetle. Anyways, they haven't been able to bring them up legally since 1979. As you said, DOT regs make sure that there is no way in hell a CJ vehicle could be brought into the US. Heck, even a TJ vehicle no longer meets the standards to pass (that new plastic bumper is not from Chrysler just being asshats). Chrysler is doing the best that can be done with the Wrangler with the regulations the way they are. India will probably start tightening up their standards soon which will signal an end to most of the old models (like the CJ) that are still being built there.
