MiscellaneousDaimlerChrysler to recall Jeeps® with 4.0 Liter Engines
Posted by mike on 2002/4/15 23:00:00 (309) reads

1.1 Million Wranglers, Cherokees, and Grand Cherokees are included in the recall.

As a preventative measure, the Chrysler Group will recall 2000-2002 Jeep® Wranglers, 2000-2001 Jeep Cherokees and 1999-2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0 Liter engines to reduce the possibility of debris accumulation in the engine compartment that could potentially cause a fire. There have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue.

The Chrysler Group determined a design change made to the engine manifolds modified the underhood airflow, which in rare cases could lead to debris accumulation in the engine compartment. While this situation is uncommon, the Chrysler Group will attach a shield in the manifold area to prevent this from occurring.

This affects 182,044 Jeep Wranglers, 293,968 Jeep Cherokees and 639,310 Jeep Grand Cherokees.

Here's a snippet from CNNmoney.com

The latest recall comes amid several efforts by Chrysler to improve its quality and reputation among consumers. It brings the total number of vehicles recalled by Chrysler in the past four months to about 3.3 million -- far more than the company will sell in the United States this year.

Customers will receive a letter in early May explaining that they can take their Jeeps to a local dealer to have a protective shield placed in the engine, said Angela Spencer Ford, a Chrysler spokeswoman.

"This is a preventative measure. If (customers) see a large collection of debris accumulating, they might want to take it in before then," she added.

...snip...

Chrysler said the recall affects 182,044 Jeep Wranglers, 293,968 Jeep Cherokees and 639,310 Jeep Grand Cherokees.

The latest recall follows a February recall for 1.6 million Jeep Grand Cherokees to fix what hundreds of owners said was a tendency for the vehicles to roll backward when their transmissions appear to be set in "park."

So, what I want to know is what exactly do the engineers get paid to do?

audi,
You should get a letter in the mail from Daimler-Chrysler that you will then take to a service station. To be sure, call DC customer service and make sure they have your address.
Two weeks ago, my Dealer here in Little Rock, Arkansas had not received guidance or parts yet from DC for the repairs. By now I would expect that parts are being made and letters are enroute to owners. I expect to see mine by middle May.

Ray Barker,
The emphasis is in the phrase "Jeep look". Jeep paved the way for the Hummer, so it makes sense that AM General would want to immortalize the Hummer's ancestory with the "Jeep look" - and all for an extra $30,000 - $40,000. In fact, that's the only thing that Hummer has over the Jeep - cost.

If you want the 'Jeep' look, without the recalls for shoddy design, buy a Hummer!
