A diesel version of the Liberty has arrived.
(from the official DaimlerChrysler press release) Jeep® Liberty will offer the first diesel in the U.S. and Canadian mid-size sport-utility vehicle segment, adding unique capability in support of the Jeep brand’s constant push for innovation and market leadership. This new engine offering will provide increased torque, power and range. "The availability of a diesel engine on the Jeep Liberty reinforces the Jeep brand’s leadership position in the sport-utility market, underscores our commitment to alternative fuels and technology, and gives customers an optional power plant that no other competitor can offer," said Jeff Bell, Chrysler Group Vice President – Jeep. Jeep Liberty will be available with a 2.8-liter common rail diesel (CRD) engine for the first time in the United States and Canada. The 2.8-liter CRD is rated at an estimated 160 horsepower (120 kW) at 3800 rpm and with 295 lb.-ft. (400 N.m) at 1800 rpm, providing class-leading torque and towing capability. Diesel engines offer another option for increased torque, towing and range, while improving fuel economy an average of 25 percent and reducing CO2 emissions by an average of 20 percent. The diesel engine will be available on both Sport and Limited models. The restyled and repackaged Jeep Liberty Renegade becomes the image leader for Liberty, and features a more rugged, classic Jeep appearance. Liberty Renegade is reminiscent of vintage Jeep vehicles with a new flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards. This model will feature functional rock rails, four skid plates, and available P235/70R16 all-terrain tires with wider, more aggressive treads, available GPS DVD-based navigation radio and “diamond plate-inspired” seat fabric. The Liberty Renegade is also available with an optional overhead light bar. The 2005 Jeep Liberty will offer a freshened exterior and refined interior across the line. The new Jeep Liberty is given a freshened exterior design with new front fascia, grille, foglamps, fender flares and body side-moldings. Interior refinements include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics and trim bezels and improved seat comfort. "True to its Jeep heritage, the 2005 Jeep Liberty continues to give enthusiasts a sense of personal capability and freedom by offering the best four-wheel-drive lineup in the segment," said Bell. "The Jeep Liberty distinguishes itself from less capable 4 x 4s." Jeep Liberty clearly stands apart among car-based sport-utility vehicles in terms of capability, as well as truck-based offerings in terms of on-road refinement. A coil spring independent front suspension and link-coil rear suspension provide an exceptional on-road ride and legendary off-road capability. Sturdiness and four-wheel drive give Jeep Liberty 5000 lbs. of trailer-towing capability. The 2005 Jeep Liberty 4 x 4 models are Trail Rated® and meet or exceed the minimum requirements established by the Nevada Automotive Test Center (NATC) and Jeep Engineering. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.

They do sell more parts for the liberty now.. I know skyjacker and now rusty's sells a 2.5" suspension lift (alot better than a spacer lift).
I guess when I see the red 05 liberty in those pictures.. I can't help but think dodge durrango front bumper in a way...
But I will say the 6 speed manual and the diesel should be a big hit if gas prices stay where they are.. On jeep.com it says a liberty will go 480 miles on a tank of gas! alot better than 290 to 320 I get...

I think that the original Liberty looks fine for what it is. I will hold my opinion for the updated version until I see them in person and on the streets and trails.

I agree; this would look better if it were more squared-off like a Wrangler. At first I liked the squared-off look of the Renegade version. The more I look at the Renegade, the more it seems to not fit together just right. I guess I'll need to see the Renegade in person to be sure.

295 ft-lbs of torque? Why can't I get that in a TJ? Plus the added fuel efficiency should make this model a winner among consumers that are more skeptical of the Liberty in addition to the after market suspension mods that are becoming available for the KJ.

Originally posted by: Bill It appears to be an improvment in the styling department, it looks better than the new Grand Cherokee thats for certain! The addition of a diesel option is way over due for Jeep, the Wrangler should have had that option long ago. I hope it now makes its way to the Wrangler platform.
The Liberty is finally getting to where it should have been from day one. Now maybe in a couple the years the Grand Cherokee will evolve into something more appealing than a leather clad yuppie machine. Unfortunatly Jeep will continue to lose ground until they can compete with the ridiculous hummer line. I was hoping to see the GC get replaced by the Rescue concept, or at least have been inspired by it.

The only down thing I can see is that the flares and bumpers will not be painted on the Renegade and I am not a big fan of the grey cladding,
Has anybody heard if the Lberty and the new Grand will be available with a painted grill instead of the pictured chrome. Like the cladding I am not a big fan of chrome bling.

Originally posted by: Jon All Jeep vehicles should share a common, recognizable design theme. For Jeep it is the Wrangler look that personifies Jeep. The Liberty and GC and any future Jeep vehicles should embrace that design legacy and integrate the:
0iiiiiii0 front end as much as possible. The new Rescue concept it a drastic step in the right direction. If it ever gets built, and yes Jeep needs it, it will sell, but unfortunately it will probably be a 50K+ vehicle.

I used to trust CHRYSLER engineering but the stuff coming down the pipe the last couple of years since daimler got involved has been Krud.
