The 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport Trac is a crossover sport utility vehicle based on the best-selling Jeep Liberty.

The 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport Trac is a crossover sport utility vehicle based on the best-selling Jeep Liberty.

Liberty Sport Trac combines the best interior features of the four-door Liberty with more cargo-carrying versatility, with its standard short pickup-style cargo box. At the same time, Sport Trac is designed to protect an adventurous image with bold styling inside and out, and good ride and handling characteristics.

Design

The Jeep Liberty Sport Trac redefined the sport utility segment by offering the versatility of four full doors, a roomy feature-filled interior, combined with a 51-inch pickup box.
The Sport Trac is the world's first SUV with a durable color-coordinated Sheet Molded Composite (SMC) cargo box and an available swing-over tubular bed extender that dramatically increases Sport Trac's capacity to haul bulky cargo.

An available lockable hard tonneau cover converts the pickup bed into a giant trunk.
Sport Trac is based on the popular 4-door Liberty, with the frame lengthened 14.25 inches and made 40 percent stiffer. Added to this platform is a specially tuned suspension and bigger, more powerful brakes.

Packaging

Versatility is the key to the Sport Trac.

Sport Trac has 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space in the standard cargo bed, which measures 50 inches long, 51.4 inches wide and 19.7 inches deep.

Interior storage is just as versatile. The standard floor console includes two large front cup holders, open front storage area, convenience clip, tow pop-out rear cup holders, hinged armrest that allows access to a removable soft pack storage bag with adjustable shoulder strap.

An available high series console, on models with optional seating, features a coin holder, front power point, flow-through rear heater/air conditioning with rear blower controls, audio headphone jacks and rear audio controls.

The available overhead console on the Sport Trac contains two map/courtesy lights, compass, outside temperature display and garage door opener storage bin. The Sport Trac offers three seating packages. Standard on all models are premium high-back bucket seats with cloth inserts and bolsters and a rear 60/40 split bench seat that is equipped with two-way adjustable head restraints on the outboard seating positions. Optional on all models are cloth bucket seats with driver-side 6-way power seat adjustment, adjustable recline and a four-way manually adjustable head restraint.

Leather bucket seats have identical features to the cloth bucket seats but also feature a driver/passenger seat manual lumbar adjustment and four-way head restraints.

The Sport Trac has a standard AM/FM stereo/cassette/single CD player, clock, optional dual-media or an optional Pioneer Sound System featuring a six-disc in-dash CD player.

An optional power moonroof can be tilted open or fully retracted and includes a manually retractable sliding sunshade as well as an Express One-Touch-Open feature.

Powertrains

Sport Track is powered by a 4.0L, single overhead cam (SOHC) V-6 engine rated at 210 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission with overdrive or an optional five-speed automatic overdrive transmission.

Sport Trac has a 5300-lb. maximum towing capacity with a 4x2 automatic transmission when properly equipped.

Ride and Handling

Sport Trac's independent short- and long-arm front suspension offers a combination of smooth ride and sharp handling. The rack-and-pinion steering system provides good returnability, low steering effort and outstanding handling.

The available limited-slip rear axle transfers torque from the wheel that's slipping to the wheel that has grip. The available electronic shift Control Trac four-wheel drive system is easy to operate and provides excellent traction on loose or slippery surfaces.

Why are they using the 4.0? I believe the 3.7 would be the likely choice, since the 4.0 is due to be phased out of production in 2003. That said, I think the right idea would just be a pickup truck (body-on-frame design). What's the point, anyway? Why must they cater to the yuppie idiots? Sportrac is also a trademark of Ford, so the name is unlikely to carry over to this "thing". And why not bring back the Comanche name?

here is my comment: and how much heavier is the "sport trac" than the liberty? they always ocme out with new models with more bells and whistles, like the blazer vs the trailblazer, more body stuff, more weight, less power... just a thought.

only thing giving it away is the Sport Trac name...a four-door Scrambler would work, though.

Rather than a Liberty Scrambler, or maybe in addition to the Liberty Sport Trac, I'd like to see a Wrangler TJ based Scrambler. Keep it to the original, basic idea.

.....or how about an image of our beloved XJ in sport trac trim that might be cool! Why can't DC come up with ideas like these instead of things like the Compass? That's right they are run by those fun loving Germans now! JEEP
HELD HOSTAGE, DAY 1126. OK, I'am done now.

My vote would be for an XJ version of the same idea. Seen a few one-off custom jobs done with XJ's in the past. Take the XJ, cut off the back, throw in a removable rear window like the Avalanche and I think DC would have a big hit on their hands. I do think that if DC and Jeep were to get back into the pickup segment, the Liberty "Sport Trac" is probably the way they would go.

It's a nice concept though, even if it will never see the light of day. Give the Liberty some functionality... and with an extended bed cover make it pretty snazzy. Now, if they could just drop the bug-eyed front & give it a more Cherokee look I'd be back in the Jeep market.. Oh, and they really need to drop another 1000 pounds or so... Now, if DC could just get that kind of original thinking back we could expect great things from Jeep again. Except that the Daimler side seems to have run off all the talent from the Chrysler side

DCX would never let anything this obviously righteous ever get produced.

Too many white suburban males would buy it, and then what in the hell would DCX do?

Stop making LHS's or somethin'?

Its in my garage like yesterday !!!

I am currently driving an extended cab small
pick-up.

My daughter is growing up fast
(don't they all)
and will be too big for the jump seats too soon

I am not very happy about my current larger
extended cab/4 door choices

I really like having the truck bed to with its extra
room and no fear about putting messy stuff in
it (like I did inside my Jeeps)
& the only thing I miss about my current truck
vs a Jeep is the Selec Trac
(yes its available on the Dakota but see above
sentence about lack of choice satisfaction )

So as far as I am concerned this woukd be
perfect for me

too bad its available April 1st only

Actually, the idea is a great one. You can't use the Sport Trac name, however, since Ford uses that for their defect-plagued version of the Exporer.

How about the Liberty Scrambler?

I almost fell for it until I remembered what day it was. It's a great idea, I hope
you sent this to DC. It's amazing what a few extra iches in length does for the looks of the Liberty, can we see an image of the regular Liberty with the added length? or how about a two door pickup with a drop top like the Dakota Sport
of the late 80's.
