The 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport Trac is a crossover sport utility vehicle based on the best-selling Jeep Liberty.

Liberty Sport Trac combines the best interior features of the four-door Liberty with more cargo-carrying versatility, with its standard short pickup-style cargo box. At the same time, Sport Trac is designed to protect an adventurous image with bold styling inside and out, and good ride and handling characteristics.

Design

The Jeep Liberty Sport Trac redefined the sport utility segment by offering the versatility of four full doors, a roomy feature-filled interior, combined with a 51-inch pickup box.
The Sport Trac is the world's first SUV with a durable color-coordinated Sheet Molded Composite (SMC) cargo box and an available swing-over tubular bed extender that dramatically increases Sport Trac's capacity to haul bulky cargo.

An available lockable hard tonneau cover converts the pickup bed into a giant trunk.
Sport Trac is based on the popular 4-door Liberty, with the frame lengthened 14.25 inches and made 40 percent stiffer. Added to this platform is a specially tuned suspension and bigger, more powerful brakes.

Packaging

Versatility is the key to the Sport Trac.

Sport Trac has 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space in the standard cargo bed, which measures 50 inches long, 51.4 inches wide and 19.7 inches deep.

Interior storage is just as versatile. The standard floor console includes two large front cup holders, open front storage area, convenience clip, tow pop-out rear cup holders, hinged armrest that allows access to a removable soft pack storage bag with adjustable shoulder strap.

An available high series console, on models with optional seating, features a coin holder, front power point, flow-through rear heater/air conditioning with rear blower controls, audio headphone jacks and rear audio controls.

The available overhead console on the Sport Trac contains two map/courtesy lights, compass, outside temperature display and garage door opener storage bin. The Sport Trac offers three seating packages. Standard on all models are premium high-back bucket seats with cloth inserts and bolsters and a rear 60/40 split bench seat that is equipped with two-way adjustable head restraints on the outboard seating positions. Optional on all models are cloth bucket seats with driver-side 6-way power seat adjustment, adjustable recline and a four-way manually adjustable head restraint.

Leather bucket seats have identical features to the cloth bucket seats but also feature a driver/passenger seat manual lumbar adjustment and four-way head restraints.

The Sport Trac has a standard AM/FM stereo/cassette/single CD player, clock, optional dual-media or an optional Pioneer Sound System featuring a six-disc in-dash CD player.

An optional power moonroof can be tilted open or fully retracted and includes a manually retractable sliding sunshade as well as an Express One-Touch-Open feature.

Powertrains

Sport Track is powered by a 4.0L, single overhead cam (SOHC) V-6 engine rated at 210 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission with overdrive or an optional five-speed automatic overdrive transmission.

Sport Trac has a 5300-lb. maximum towing capacity with a 4x2 automatic transmission when properly equipped.

Ride and Handling

Sport Trac's independent short- and long-arm front suspension offers a combination of smooth ride and sharp handling. The rack-and-pinion steering system provides good returnability, low steering effort and outstanding handling.

The available limited-slip rear axle transfers torque from the wheel that's slipping to the wheel that has grip. The available electronic shift Control Trac four-wheel drive system is easy to operate and provides excellent traction on loose or slippery surfaces.
