Concept/DemonstrationProduction JT in 2009?
Posted by mike on 2007/10/30 6:52:13 (3664) reads

One of our readers emailed us this tasty morsel:

Saw in Truck Trend Magazine that the new JT Pickup is being tested and is confirmed of a future production for this coming 2009. No name for JT has been found. Rumors it may claim a Retro-name such as Gladiator, Honcho, Scrambler or Comanche vs. a new name such as Brute. Too bad they didn't add Smallfoot, Blackfoot, Buckeroo, Rancher, Sasquatch, Bandit or Cowboy because it has a catch.

I don't get Truck Trend Magazine, so if someone can confirm this, that would be great. I searched their web site, but didn't see any references to the JT.

Mike -- Looks like another vote is in order.

Q: What should the new "JT" be called?

A: Scrambler
A: JT
A: JK-8
A: JKT
A: Gladiator
A: Honcho, Comanche, or some other stupid Southwestern sounding name.

I think reviving the Scrambler name would be very retro-cool! And it defnitely already has some name recognition, so JEEP would have a leg up when they start advertising it.

How 'bout "HummerCrusher"?

BTW, the H3T looks just plain awful. I hope Hummer builds it.

Why is it that GM seems to think that there is a market for a rugged small pickup, while Chrysler has maintained that there is none?

While I love the idea of the JT, I don't think that it's a flexible enough concept. I love the way the Gladiator concept was executed - I think it would be much more successful stylistically. To me, the Gladiator separated itself from the Wrangler as an independant vehicle much more than the JT does. They spent enough time researching a 4-door Wrangler variant, what happened to Jeep taking risks?

I'm just dreading the days when Jeep finally does come out with a pickup and all that we will hear is how Jeep was following Hummer. I still hear from some that think the 4door JK resembles an H3.

What happened to JEEP taking risks? GMAB!

They just went from 3 vehicles in their lineup to 7 (or 8). From the GC, Liberty, & TJ to the GC, Liberty, JK-2dr, JK-4dr, Commander, Patriot, and the RISKIEST of all --the Compass! Oh, if we stretch it, the 8th could be considered the GC-SRT8... Not to mention several models now being offered with 2WD... They stuck their necks out pretty far.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Gladiator-esque (big) Scrambler, but by necessity, I'm guessing the CAFE laws will drive that game plan more toward a (smaller) JT (JK-4dr) type platform...with a $ticker in the low-$20K's --which is fine with me. I think they'd sell many more of those.

Also, I believe the bloated GMC Avalanches & Chevy SSRs were considered dismal failures (big & overpriced) and maybe JEEP took notice.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a wussy truck, but I do think that given the heritage, Scrambler should be the name of a compact, Wrangler-based pickup.

That way, they can make a full-sized Gladiator on a larger platform (but hopefully keeping the styling)...

I was just funnin' with the wuss comment. Buttttt... I would REALLY rather have the Gladiator, only not on a larger platform but Wrangler based with an extended cab, spare on the side and separated bed.

Use Scrambler for this wussy truck and leave the Gladiator name for a Wrangler based "man's" truck in the future.

I think he was referancing the original Jeep Truck names (Honcho, Scrambler, Commanche, Gladiator etc.) and continuing on with some more fun names.
Here are my few silly additions:
Maximus, Tonto, Kimosabbe, Thor, and my favorite "The Hurlinator".

I vote for the old school Jeep truck names.... Gladiator, Comanche, etc.

They should bring back the J10, that would be badass!
