SalesMarch Jeep Sales Down 6% From Last Year
Posted by mike on 2002/4/2 23:00:00 (317) reads

DaimlerChrysler reported sales numbers for March, and the Jeep brand is down 6%.

Chrysler Group reported U.S. sales of 217,158 units in March 2002, a four percent decrease compared to last year, which was the third highest March in company history (234,495). Retail sales were comparable to a year ago, but overall sales declined due to lower fleet orders, especially daily rental units.

Total sales for the month increased eight percent over February 2002, when measured on a daily selling rate.

Sales during the month showed gains in key areas. For the month, total sales of Dodge Ram were 35,457 units, up eight percent, compared to March 2001. March was the fourth consecutive month that Ram truck sales increased. Compared to March 2001, sales of the Dodge Caravan minivan at 27,427 units were up two percent last month, and Chrysler PT Cruiser sales of 14,015 units were up 11 percent.

"Sales of the all-new Dodge Ram continue to gain momentum in a highly competitive marketplace," said Gary Dilts, Senior Vice President - Sales. "This fall we will launch the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500, to complete our Ram pickup truck product line. Ram's best-in-class features, as well as its bold styling, will continue the pace set by our Ram 1500."

"Retail sales for March show that strong products and clear brand identities, along with a strategic incentive plan, can spur sales in a very competitive environment," added Dilts. "All of these factors explain why retail truck and car sales both improved significantly last month compared to March 2001."

On March 28, Chrysler Group extended its current incentive program through April 30, 2002. This program has up to $2,500 consumer cash on select 2002 model year Chrysler, Jeep(R), and Dodge vehicles, plus the company's seven- year/100,000-mile powertrain protection pledge on all Chrysler Group vehicles.

We think that it is interesting to note that in March 2001, 12,765 Cherokees sold, while in March, 2002 the vechicle that was designed and built to replace the Cherokee, the 12,594 Libertys were sold.

You have to take the numbers with a grain of salt I suppose. While Cherokee
sales for March 2001 were higher than Liberty sales for this year it appears that
Liberty sales for the year are slightly higher than were Cherokee's for the same
period last year. Still, it makes me wonder how well they both would have sold
side by side. I believe that the main reason for the preceived down turn in total
Jeep sales lately is simply due to the sheer numbers of SUV's in the market today.

I have no idea what sort of mathematical gymnastics go into the calculation of "daily selling rates" but, based on the raw data provided, percentage sales declines are all significantly greater than those reported in the table.

I agree. I traded my 98 Cherokee for a SC Xterra SE, loaded & there is no comparison! The Xterra is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Yes folks, better then my Cherokee and it puts the Liberty to shame! But I have to say the Avalanche is a GM piece of gray plastic crap!

FLOCKING!?...... I'am not flocking anywhere. I drove a Cherokee before there was a Liberty and I will continue to drive a Cherokee for quite some time. Besides if I were to FLOCK anywhere it would probably be to the Grand Cherokee
and not an X-Terra, crew cab PU or anything named after a natural disaster. Hell, I would buy a used Jeep and restore it before I would consider any of those options.

Daimler has turned Jeep into a laughing
stock. The Liberty's March sales are lower
then last March's Cherokee numbers.. and
those numbers were during a pitiful final year
for Cherokee sales. That means the Liberty
can't even beat the Cherokee's worst
numbers!!! The Liberty is a butt ugly @ss
mobile, the interior feels cramped even
compared to a Wrangler, and the interior
seats and layout just looks plain cheap.
Those numbers reflect the fact that the same
people who are attracted to the Liberty are
also attracted to the Ford Escape and Toyota
Rav 4, to better looking vehicles that have
more interior room. Those of us who drove
Cherokee's are flocking to Nissan and Chevy
dealers for Avalanches, Xterras, and crew cab
pickup trucks. The Liberty is a pathetic failure
and Jeep is now paying for it's decision t
replace an Ass kicking truck with an ugly,
wimpy looking, cheap, cramped mommie
mobile.
