WranglerDemand for 4-Door Wrangler Much Higher Than Expected

Autoweek is reporting that demand for the 4-Door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has taken even Chrysler Group by surprise. Over 80% of the 600 vehicles being built per day are of the 4-door variety.

"Demand for the hardtop four-door is much higher than we expected," said Cynthia Sidoti, Toledo Supplier Park plant manager.

The 2007 four-door Wrangler began arriving in dealerships last September.

In June, Jeep sold 10,952 Wranglers, the best June results ever for the Wrangler, according to Darryl Jackson, Chrysler vice president of U.S. sales.

Dealers say they've had a difficult time getting the top-of-the-line Rubicon version of the Wrangler, which is trail-ready and has Chrysler's MyGIG entertainment and information system that includes navigation.

"The market is overwhelming," Sidoti said. For 2008, the MyGIG system will be available without the navigation.

The Toledo Supplier Park is closed this week for model changeover. Workers will return July 23 and begin building 2008 models.

Re: Demand for 4-Door Wrangler Much Higher Than Expected
10 years I waited for hte 4 door Wrangler. Of course I bought a lot of other SUVs while I was waiting. When I heard Jeep was coming out with a coil-sprung Wrangler, I became very interested, and took a ride in a friends 97. I liked it, but it wasn't exactly "baby-safe" - that's the point in life I was at.
Then in '01 I took a Sport for a test drive from the dealer. It was fun and rode nice enough, but whay too small for toddler gear & dawg - not to mention wifey & kidz.
In 03 I saw a Rubicon, and liked the lockers - but still too small.
In 04 they came out with the Unlimited Rubicon and I took a khaki tan Sahara out for a test drive. It was better, so I decided the kids could climb through the 2 doors & just suck it up.
In 05 I still didn't quite have enough saved up.
In 06 I was almost there on $, then I heard there might just be a production version of the 4-door AEV stretched Wrangler Unlimited.
September 06 the first Sahara JKL arrived at the dealership, I dropped everything and flew over to the dealer and brought it home to the family. Eveyone fit.
I prayed that it would have the CRD, for about 6 months I begged DCx... Finally in early Feb 07 I ordered it with everything, having given up on the CRD for 07 & 08.
After 3 months of no progress, I cancelled the MyGig and boom! It went to D1 status.
I do love it, but if they ever do build it with the CRD for the US - I'll buy the first one! As a matter of fact...Where did that JK50 CRD concept wind up from SEMA last fall? Hmmmm.....

The word is "DUH". As much as DCX doesn't want to admit it...when the canceled the XJ and replaced it with that infernal IFS KJ, they lost a lot of customers interest.

Something very capable, 4 doors for kid's or more cargo area. The 4 dr Wrangler is DCX's way of fixing their own stupid mistake.

??? Yeah, those hundred thousand plus people who buy the KJ every year are lost to the jeep brand? Speaking of "LOST", sylnanis, please check out www.lostkjs.com sometime.

Don't get me wrong, I think it was a mistake not to get a 4 door wrangler sooner, but don't make the KJ out to be a flop or a weak Jeep. I used to have and would like a wrangler again someday, but I also need something that can tow. The 3500lb towing of a wrangler just doesn't cut it. My KJ can tow 5000lb, go anywhere I want to go, and was more affordable than a larger SUV or similarly equipped truck.

Anyway, when you point out the stupids moves DCX has made, and they have made plenty, don't make ignorant comments in the process. When you do you're just making yourself look as foolish as DCX

When I heard that Jeep was replacing the XJ with a new model back in 2001 I fully expected to trade in mine for the new version. Well, one look at the KJ changed that. The luggage area is substantially smaller (back seat up), so taking 2 or 3 friends on a camping trip is out. Maybe IFS can be made to work on moderate trails, but I like hard core trails. And I just never could get used to the frog eye front end. So I just bought a commute car and stuck the Jeep XJ in my garage. With gas well over $3 a gallon I'm saving a bundle. I agree with you on the need to tow. Also the visability through a Wrangler windshield never cut it for me. I suspect that is why they have to fold them down on the trail. If they put a diesel in one I could get used to it though!

Q: Why has Chrysler lately been surprised by hits like the Wrangler?

A: Because German management knows nothing about the US market, but made all the decisions for Chrysler --- good or bad.

Re: Demand for 4-Door Wrangler Much Higher Than Expected
Why is it that Jeep always seems surprised by how popular the vehicles are that most people would think would be obviously popular (ie: Rubicons, the 4-dr Wrangler, any Jeep with a diesel, etc) and never seem to green light vehicles that would also be obvious hot sellers too... ie: the Dakar - the original 4-dr Wrangler concept from 1997; the Gladiator; the Rescue; the JT; a CRD powered JK, even the 1998 Jeepster concept.

As good as they're doing, they still don't seem to be able to gauge market demands/desires very well.

I'm not sure how many people read this anymore or remember me back from back in the Gladiator concept days but I did it...I bought a Toyota. I still have the Wrangler....wish I could have had the Gladiator. Wake up Chrysler!

I agree but have not bought a new truck yet, I am still holding out thinking that Jeep will come to their senses and build the Gladiator, JT, or JK with a diesel 6-speed manual. (preference in that order)
