WranglerJeep Enlists for Active Duty - Sir! - UPDATED
Posted by Anonymous on 2007/9/14 6:34:04 (1189) reads

The 2007 Wrangler returns to active duty for US armed forces - Almost.
Jeep has presented the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited to the armed forces for consideration.

Article from easier.com

It includes various upgrades for military spec. like 1.5 ton axles and leaf springs - and the much ballihooed 2.8L CRD diesel engine not available for civilian use in the North America. This same engine in the UK is hitting 33mpg.

Note from Mike: AutoMotoPortal.com also has the exact same article (press release) on this new military Jeep - with a larger photo as well.

UPDATE: Jalopnik.com has a whole bunch of photos of the J8.

This is good news. Good for the brand itself and I suspect somewhere on down the line it'll prove good to us civilian Jeepers in that we'll get some better & cooler vehicles from Jeep.

Cool, good to see Jeep going back to it's roots!!!
Although it's not exactly the same CRD engine that went into the European/Australian JKs.... Since according to the article, the power output is only 118Kw, while the 2.8L CRD wranglers here haven an actually output of 130KW and 400NM of torgue! hmmm...
Maybe It's the CRD from the liberty, or maybe it's been tune down....

As was mentioned, It cant' really be a IED proof GP truck, but I' reckon it would make a kick arse light reckon vehicle!! I'd rather take that, then the Seal dune buggy!!

I'm located in Egypt & "The Jeep J8 will be produced in a Chrysler LLC joint-venture facility in Cairo, Egypt, and will be available in spring 2008." ... namely the AAV.
Hopefully this time they will come to their senses & offer a civilian version.
In the past they left us high & dry with the TJ/L ... The TJ was never offered on our market.

The last models offered where the YJ & the YJ/L (YJ/L was initially a military model)

Nice... a bit lighter and more manueverable than the Hummer.

It will never see the widespread use that the MB, M38, and M38A1 had though. More and more, the traditional vehicles are destined for base transportation. More IED-resistant forms of transportation such as the MRAP trucks are being used for patrols in possibly-hostile areas.

. . . but those behemoths can't go where the Wrangler--or even the Hummer--can. There will always be a need for a light duty recon/attack vehicle. Put a set of quad .50 caliber machine guns on a Wrangler and you got yourself one intimadating offensive machine.
