CompassAnother Harsh Compass Review (plus a good one)

Ouch. AutoWeek.com posted a fairly rough review of the Compass. Here's a snippet:

Most of the talk about the new Jeep Compass has centered on whether it’s a real Jeep. But we just spent two weeks in a Limited, the top model, and the question of “Jeepness” seemed secondary. This one, at least, was simply a dismal car.

Sharing a platform with the Dodge Caliber, Compass blends homely looks with unrefined manners to a degree not seen since the unlamented Pontiac Aztek. That this Compass Limited stickered out at $26,180—an easy $10,000 more than the base price of a Compass or that of a Caliber SXT—simply set its shortcomings in stark relief. The day water leaked into the cabin from the sunroof switch, drips splattering onto the sadly misguided CVT “automatic” transmission’s lever, we figured the polarization on the Compass’ needle was reversed. This thing’s headed due south.

Check out the entire review.

This makes us think - has anyone seen a positive Compass review? Let us know in the comments area.

UPDATE: One of our readers sent us this link from acarplace.com. It's a positive review - here's a snippet:
Overall, the Jeep Compass is an excellent option for those who were thinking about a Ford Escape, Ford Explorer, or other larger-than-really-needed SUV. It provides SUV styling and four wheel drive in a sensibly sized package that still manages to be nimble and quick on its feet (with the stick at least) and can hold four people in comfort - especially if two are kids - while still carrying a reasonable amount of cargo, and with a reasonable price.

I don't really mean to bash on the Compass here, but sumtimes I just can't help it. Some auto reviewers over at edmunds show that this jeep doesn't even get that good mileage. They got real world 15-21 mpg. my 2.5l 4 banger hasn't even touched 15. Where did the milage go? maybe the manual gets closer to the epa than the cvt. here's the link

AKjeep, your comments typical of finding support for s bias.

I own a Compass. I have driven it for almost 4 months, MPG is just fine. I average 24/25. I took it up a turnpike and averaged 31.5 MPG.

The CVT is excellent and the autostick option makes driving fun.

I'm glad too hear MPG is better than this article reported. I just found it a little odd that it would be that bad.

I am truly amazed! I don't know what the reviewer was driving; but I doubt it was a Compass, I own a Compass 4x4. I have driven it for four months. It does just fine! The CVT works very well. It doesn't jolt, jar, stagger or whine.

It is a fine, little unpretentious car. I am amazed at the vitriolic hatred poured on this car.

The safety features REALLY work. I know because I am alive today because they do work; and the Compass came through without a scratch.

Is the Compass perfect? Hell, no. Is it comprable to a BMW? Of course not.

Auto Week ought to be renamed Auto Weak.

Maybe we have a jointure of insecure "real" jeep fans [do they really own jeeps? and reviewers who are less than objective.

As far as I am concerned the review is pure BS. It cirtainly isn't about the Compass I own and drive.

Are these guys paid to kill cars? At my age I could care less. My Compass will outlive me.

Some of the poster here don't like the Compass, the Commander, the new Wrangler, or the Liberty. I have to question if they like their dog.

There's always Land Rover waiting to take your money. Wait . . . isn't LR owned by Ford?

I agree with the majority of posters who couldn't care less about the Compass, because it's just not a viable JEEP to us...
...but...
If Jeep were to build a Compass SRT4 version with the 300HP SRT4 engine (like the upcoming Caliber SRT4)... they would... errr...uhh... QUICKLY move off the lots...passing LOTS of Subaru rice burners on the way!

While I'm extrapolating, how about putting that 4-banger 300HP in the JK! Nah, let me pull back on that --that engine's probably really buzzy.

I have heard some credible(?) inside rumors that DCX is ALREADY considering a more powerful version of the 3.8L V6 or of the 4.0L V6 for the JK/JKL. And no, not the Phoenix (yet)... something in the interim. Hmmm... Anyone else hear anything along those lines?

 Re: Another Harsh Compass Review
Well, it's badged "Jeep" but it's not a traditional truck based Jeep, it's a car. So in a sense it is as close to a Buick as it is a Jeep. Really, with the Compass Jeep is going after the Subaru set, but they have a long way to go before this model is on par with Subaru. I'll give Jeep a nod here for trying to broaden their market base, but I think they can do better. I'm sure they'll improve the Compass, if they keep it around. But the first review is dead on, especially about the styling it's really bad. The massive front bumper, the nasty C-pillar and that dad-burn Liberty-esque frog looking headlight/hood arrangement are all horrible. I would not say it is as ugly as a first generation Chevy Avalanche (and Caddy variant) nor is it as ugly as the hideous Pontiac Aztec because no marque is as capable as GM at making purely ugly vehicles. Never the less, the Compass has some issues to be addressed with quality and styling but it has potential on down the line.

Oh, and in my area of TX these things (Compasses) are just languishing on the Jeep dealers lots. This past week a local dealer had them advertised on sale starting at $13,995.00. To date I've seen just one on the road, it was silver, and was being driven by a teenaged girl. Interestingly, I've also only seen one '07 Wrangler on the road and my local dealer's lot has 12 of them (both two and four door) sitting there not moving. Perhaps Jeep is having a hard time getting the new Wrangler off the ground too.

Uhhh.. no! You can't take all the ruggedness out of something to compete with the crossover market and then have it be neither rugged or ride like a car. Then no one is happy.

Furthermore the Compass probably does ride just like a Buick which is why it is generating derusion. Buicks, like most big 3 cars are under damped and undersprung and throw up all over themselves when you try to do anything at a speed greater then 5mph.

Not to attack but the fact you hold Buick as a benchmark to ride is upholding a rediculous myth at it's heart and completly ignorant as to how any modern vehicle should handle. Especially when they nueter the hell out of something so it will be less of a suv.
