Wrangler2007 Wrangler Nominated for North American Truck of the Year
Posted by mike on 2006/12/14 7:18:23 (796) reads

An international group of automotive journalists has selected the Honda Fit, the Saturn Aura and the Toyota Camry as finalists for the 2007 North American Car of the Year. The Jeep Wrangler, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7 are finalists for the 2007 North American Truck of the Year.

The awards are unique in the United States because - instead of being given by a single publication, radio or television station - they are given by 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. To be eligible, vehicles must be "all new" or "substantially changed" from the previous model.

Last year the 2006 North American Car of the Year was the Honda Civic, and the 2006 North American Truck of the Year was the Honda Ridgeline.

The nominees for the 2007 North American Truck of the Year are:

Acura MDX
Acura RDX
Audi Q7
BMW X5
Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban
Chevrolet Silverado
Dodge Nitro
Ford Edge
GMC Acadia
Honda CR-V
Hyundai Santa Fe
Jeep Wrangler
Mazda CX-7
Saturn Vue Green Line
Toyota FJ Cruiser

The winners will be announced January 7th at the North American International Auto Show.

CLARIFICATION: While the Wrangler was nominated for the Truck of the year - it didn't make the cut to be one of the 3 finalists. Sorry for the confusion.

As I said before, the Wrangler is NOT a finalist. In fact, IT WAS LEFT OFF THE BALLOT!!! And now they're revoting. Sheesh what a mess!

There's really no competition. The 4 door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is revolutionary, , capable, safe, affordable, and a gas hog.
Too bad the Jeep brass didn't have the foresight to introduce the CRD in the 2007 Wrangler instead of the Grand Cherokee or better yet - Both!

. . . what if they would have to discontinue the CRD next year--like they did the Liberty for '07--due to environmentalists' pressures? Then you would really have your shorts in a knot.

I can't find any other news source that says the Wrangler is a finalist, only the other three you mentioned.

For instance, freep says "In alphabetical order, the finalists for car of the year are the Honda Fit, Saturn Aura and Toyota Camry. The truck finalists are the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7."

Autoblog's post had the same three truck finalists.

????????

I'm with you. Everything I've seen says the Wrangler didn't make the list of finalists. Either Mike knows something we don't or he is needlessly spinning the story.

Yeah - you're right, it is confusing. But let me hazard a guess...

Reading all the other coverage of this story on other sites, I think that maybe the 3 finalists (Silverado, Edge, CX-7) came from the group of nominees that are posted in the article. I haven't been able to confirm this though.

I got the article directly from a press release.

Sorry, Mike. I should have known it was a press release, that explains the spin. With so many sources of info available, it seems pretty stupid for a manufacturer to distort its achievements, though.

If they think the Honda Ridgeline was North American Truck of the Year for 2006, the new Jeep Wrangler doesn't stand a chance for 2007..... How the Honda Ridgeline is a truck, I have no idea....

If the JK had an engine, it would be a shoe-in!

Anyone else notice that the "O" in the Compass logo on the bumper has a cross in it... which is eerily similar to the Zodiac killer's signature?

The compass should have stayed in the Plymouth pen. The Patriot would have been sufficient to 'expand' the Jeep customer base.
I think DCx is trying to expand the Jeep nameplate a little too quickly, and the compass is the reckless outcome of over-sharing a platform.

The original thread was on "Truck of the Year". How does bashing the Compass relate? Geesh, guys and gals of the jury . . . .

They should of made a Chrysler version instead and called it the LeBaron Town & Country Edition.
Complete with fake wood trim.
