Jeep Legend Passes

From Yahoo! News:

Roy D. Chapin Jr., the former chief executive of American Motors Corp. who spearheaded the acquisition of Jeep, has died of heart failure.

Chapin died Sunday in Nantucket, Mass. He was 85.

Chapin was the former chairman and chief executive officer of American Motors, and the son of Roy D. Chapin, one of the founders of the Hudson Motor Car Co.

Chapin was instrumental in the acquisition of Jeep Corp. from Kaiser Industries in 1970.

``He did two things that were fundamental to (American Motor's) existence,'' said Gerald Meyers, who took over as CEO when Chapin retired in 1977. ``He bought Jeep Corp. and the other thing he did was he was a relationship person. ... He could go to any one of the investment banks and he could come away with money because they had faith in him.''

Meyers said that despite Chapin's fierce defense of his family legacy, he was a ``gentle'' businessman.

``He was not a predator as a business person. When he said 'no' to something - and it wasn't very often - you walked out of the room feeling good about the person who just said 'no' to you,'' Meyers said.

3,000,000 Cherokees

After 18 years on the market, the Jeep Cherokee has recently passed the 3,000,000 vehicle mark. Here's a snippet from The Toledo Blade:

After 18 years of Toledo production, sales of the venerable Jeep Cherokee and its one-time upscale twin will total nearly 3,025,000 when remaining models head off dealership lots in coming weeks.

Sales of the so-called XJ - the Cherokee and the phased-out Jeep Wagoneer model - reached 3,009,714 worldwide in July, and more than 15,000 remain in inventory. The 3 millionth XJ model was sold in June, the same month Toledo Jeep Assembly ended Cherokee production.

Jeep is an icon worldwide, but about 77 percent of XJs, or more than 2.3 million, were sold in the United States, said Marc Henretta, a spokesman for DaimlerChrysler AG’s U.S. side.

"Most of the demand was right here in the United States," he said.

The next highest country for XJ buying is Canada, with 148,218, or 5 percent, according to numbers released by the Chrysler unit this week.

The sports utility vehicle’s best year worldwide was in 1996 when sales reached 222,277, nearly four times as many as originally hoped. Its best U.S. sales year was with 165,261 nationwide in 1999, 16 years after its debut.

About 95 percent of XJs were made at the Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant.

Liberty Passes Competitors

The Toledo Blade is reporting that the Jeep Liberty trounced its 4 nearest competitors for the month of July. The Ford Escape, the Chevy Blazer, the Honda CRV, and the Toyota RAV4 all trailed the new Liberty. Here's a snippet:

The all-new Toledo-built Jeep’s July sales nationwide soared past those of four key competitors and topped the number posted by its predecessor for the month last year, according to U.S. sales figures released by automakers yesterday.

DaimlerChrysler AG’s U.S. unit sold 10,562 Libertys nationwide last month, a 24 percent increase from June, even as the automaker’s overall monthly numbers fell 3 percent to 185,598.

Although Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., posted a 6 percent increase in July sales nationwide, other major automakers suffered.

Among Liberty competitors, the Ford Escape sold 9,878 compact sport-utility vehicles last month as the model completes its first year of sales.

The Chevrolet Blazer, the four-door version of which is being replaced by the all-new TrailBlazer, sold 7,741 models last month, a 60 percent plunge. And sales of the Honda CR-V declined 25 percent to 9,022 while Toyota RAV4 sales totaled 7,361, delivering a 116 percent increase - but not a match for the Liberty.

Jeep Cherokee sales dropped 35 percent in July nationwide compared with the year-ago month to 6,208 as inventories dwindle to make way for its successor, the Liberty.

Last year in July, dealers nationwide sold 9,550 Cherokees, which went out of production in June.

The Liberty, which is made at the new Toledo North assembly plant, will have even stronger sales once dealer inventories increase, but it’s still too soon to say whether the factory next to I-75 at the I-280 split will need a third production shift, said Gary Dilts, the Chrysler unit’s senior vice president of sales.

"We’re watching it every day," he said yesterday. "We want to grow the business properly and don’t want to oversupply it too early."

About 50,000 Libertys - more than 10,000 ahead of schedule - have been made at the factory since production of sellable vehicles started in April, said Trevor Hale, a DaimlerChrysler spokesman.

To keep up with Liberty demand, workers started putting in 10-hour shifts July 9 and are working two out of three Saturdays, he said.

In response to " Just a Girl ". I own a Cherokee and I think its a great vehicle,
and a better choice for taking on a Jamboree than the Liberty. What you need to decide is how serious you are about off-roading. If you want more than a
stock rig and plan to build a vehicle like the one you mentioned then I would think that at this time that would be easier and cheaper to do with a Cherokee.
Right now there just is not much available from the aftermarket for the Liberty.
On the other hand if most of your time is going to be spent on paved roads,
with one or two trips a year to a Jamboree or other trail ride the Liberty would
do just fine provided its equiped with the nessary items ( tow hooks, skid plates
and some M/T tires). As for being accepted by the good ol boys, I can only
say that I would welcome any new blood into the Jeep culture, as you put it
regardless of gender or what type of vehicle you choose, and I think that most
enthusiast would agree.

and mom's. There will be a bunch of women
showing up in Liberties so you'll have plenty of

Macho-comments, tough-guy attitudes, and old-fashioned bias aside...

It seems like it all comes down to personal preferences here. If you've grown to like something a certain way, then change is always difficult. I don't think it would've mattered what the Engineers came up with as a replacement for the Cherokee... there would still be the same number of people who would complain about this-that-or the other thing.

As far as comparing an Xterra to a Liberty? Just look at the numbers:
The std V6 Xterra, 170 hp
The std V6 Liberty, 210 hp
... you'd have to step up to the supercharged V6 in the Xterra just to match the Liberty!
(I'm unclear about the post by "Xterra" as to where the Xterra gets more power than the Liberty, although the Liberty is heavier)

The Xterra uses leafsprings in the rear end! lol! Talk about trying to save a buck or two. The Liberty has an awesome rear end setup, essentially the same as in the Grand. I won't even compare the front ends. They're both independent, with the beefiness edge to Jeep.

In build quality there is no comparison. The Liberty is solid. Heavy. Built to last (As far as safety goes... I'd rather be in the Liberty than the Xterra in an accident). The interior appointments simple, but with a blend of techno-functionality built in. The Xterra is just, well plastic-ey. And it rides like a truck. Do you ever wonder why Nissan feels the need to update the look of their models on a yearly basis? Because their designs age prematurely and the look is trendy. Jeep has managed to create designs and elements that last decades and are easily recognizable. The Cherokee stood for 17 years esentially unchanged asthetically!!!! Only time will tell about the Liberty, but it's bloodlines obviously run deep. There's no question when you see one.... you know it's a jeep.

Actually it is the very fact that Jeep is
abandoning the solid front axle which is why I
feel it is no longer necessary to stick with
them. The Xterra with up country suspension
will be able to do EVERYTHING the Liberty can
do, I am not comparing it to a Grand or a
Wrangler for true off road use, I own CJ7 for
that, I am talking about Nor easters, cross
country trips, and some basic off roading.... I
chose my Cherokee over the Xterra last time,
but the Cherokee isn't here anymore, the
Xterra will have more power and a better
suspension, and the Liberty....well it just
doesn't cut it! I am sure the SC Xterra will do
just fine with the off road suspension / tire
package, the earlier review iof the Xterra
blamed undersized tires for most of its
problems in the snow..... Read some of the
statements coming out of Europe, praising the
Liberty and calling for DC to follow a similar
path for the Wrangler!!! Just wait, some day
when you don't any good Jeeps anymore you'd
all wish you have gotten an Xterra, or 4Runner
or anything that would send DC a messge.
Actually a 4Runner would have been my first
choice but they don't off it with a manual tranny
anymore!

So Xterra reads the Motor Trend article and comes away seeing just how great
a vehicle the Frontier is. That same article also had high praise for the Liberty, but as usual Xterra only saw what he wanted to see. Just because the
pickup did well does not mean the X-terra will. For one the X-terra is much taller
which means a whole different vehicle dynamic. Secondly, the X-terra will have
a weight dissadvantage when compared to the Frontier. Besides that Car and
Driver did a test last year comparing a bunch of compact SUV's and they were
surprised ( their words ) how easily and quickly the X-terra got stuck. The wimpy
Toyota RAV-4 did much better off-road. A current Grand Laredo will run rings
around the X-terra off-road and will probably cost less.

Go back to the Grand.... I never left. And yes I think my 98 5.9 Limited ( or any V8 Grand or 4.0L Cherokee) would blow it away (Frontier to 60 is 9.3, add time for a heavier Xterra). I'm not in support of the Liberty, but I would not plead my case by choosing another poseur SUV. Apparently Xterra boy you don't realize that opposition mostly lies in the IFS, which is just like the Xterra but the Liberty's is probably stronger. So if the tough guy angle is your position, choose a real truck.

In response to Jeep Girl, I own almost every type of Jeep from 1942 to a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited.
I have never been 'really excited' about the coming the 'Liberty', and that is why I bought my Jeep. But giving 'constuctive critisim' and by trying a new Liberty and reading countless aticles about it this is what I would say:
drive the vehicle, let the Liberty sell for a year or two and see how the bugs work out in the vehicle (they usually always have some which you don't read about), the Liberty's storage plain and simple-sucks, but the rear door is a neat 'Suzuki addition' as well as the back window-the cherokee's is alot better especially if you have any additional people, Liberty's usually only look fair in red, no off road package in the Liberty-so I've heard because of vibration problems (my cherokee has no vibrations and I have Up-country with a rear Dana axle not the vibration prone Chrysler axle used in non Up-c Jeeps, engine in the Liberty is smooth and tranny is really smooth, front suspension is questionable, however some magazines articles are admitty that the engine is noiser than the cherokees, all in all it is geared as a Suzuki and Kia competitor-it is by no means any comparison with the Cherokee of past. Let me say this much if you ever drive a 2001 Cherokee XJ Limited, with Infinity Sound, Up-Country-it is a dream and I wouldn't trade it for a Liberty any day!

About a year ago I seen a Cherokee at the mall that had a sticker on the back
window that said " Silly Boys, Jeeps are for Girls ". The sticker was on a lightly
built XJ with a 2 or 3 inch lift, roof mounted lights and M/T tires. There was also a Jeep Jamboree USA sticker on the front window. That day put the bug in me and I knew my next vehicle would be a Jeep. It's time for that next vehicle
and I can't decide whether to buy a Cherokee Sport or a Liberty Sport. I have driven both vehicles three times and can't make up my minds. As a 24 year old
single mom who would drive mostly on paved surfaces the Liberty would be the
best choice, but I also have been to the Jamboree web site and that sounds
like fun. Its obivious that most of you guys here prefer the Cherokee for trail
use. My question to you would be this. If I would purchase the Liberty and
I would attend a Jamboree would I be ostracized for showing up in a Liberty or
would I be accepted by the good ol boys. The whole Jeep culture seems like
its a lot of fun and I know my son would love it, but if I am just going to be
ridiculed for my choice I'll just stay home.

I had a '95 Cherokee and a '98 Wrangler. Needed to replace the Cherokee, but had a problem with the weird looks and the price of the Liberty. Got an Escape V6 loaded for THOUSANDS less than the comparable Liberty, and get 4 mpg higher EPA to boot. I love the Escape, and while I know it isn't as capable as the Liberty off-road, I still have the Wrangler for that, and the Escape is MUCH faster than the Liberty. I think Jeep screwed up with the Liberty...my wife even refused to be seen in one on a test drive.

I leased my new Liberty in June. I have never been more pleased with an SUV. I've had Explorers and Blazers before but never have I driven a 4X4 that handles so easily. The Liberty is nimble. I love the short turning radius and it does not have the top heavy feeling my other vehicles have had. I drive it off road and it handles super. On interstate I barely feels bumps and can sit back and relax with the cruise on. This vehicle will almost drive itself. I can see out of it to back, park, etc. My only recommendation for future models would be to move the electric window buttons back to the door and not on the middle armrest. It is akward driving and pulling up to a drive through window sometimes. Other than that, three cheers to Jeep for designing something so fun to drive!!!

with an even better off road suspension
package....... Yes I saw the designers and
"engineers" for the new liberty, they were all
profiled in Jeep news magazine, and they all
had on boat shoes and drove pink VW
Cabrio's as best I can tell. Grocery hooks,
what great engineering! LOL I'd rather drive a

Anyone who is happy about the Liberty doesn't
really care about Jeep as an entity. The only
thing that you should be hoping for is a
headline like "Jeep Liberty a Bust, DC to build
Dakar in its place! " Only then would I pass on
the Xterra!

P.S. And regardin Jeep as more of an
American company then Nissan, Jeep is
owned by the Germans, Nissan is owned by
the Japanese, Jeep is funded by Germany,
Nissan is funded by France, Jeeps are built in
the United States, Nissan's are built in the
United States..... so what's the difference at
this point, NOTHING!!! Except that Germany's
vision for Jeep $ucks!!! Wait till those Liberty
designers get their hands on the Wrangler,
wonder if you all will be cheering then! GO

Anyway, the people that I spoke to who had Libertys were very impressed with the way they handled the trails (I have a WJ). Jeep had a fleet of them driven by engineers and press people to make sure people got to see them in action, and I did not hear any negative reports.

One major difference:

Liberty was designed in the US by Jeep engineers!

YES DC is "partly" owned by a German company AND partly American owned. DC is a PARTNERSHIP! (Yes, I know they have a German President!) Can you say the same about Nissan??

Seems to me that all the Nissan commercials have been bent on the “cool college-kiddy” features of the X-terra instead of 4X4 prowess. Looks like they got you too! Do you have you Birkenstocks on??

For us Cherokee fans the news of the XJ passing the three million unit mark is
the last and most fitting milestone for us to celebrate. Tomorrow I am going to
wash my '99 Sport , print this article, frame it and take my piece of American
automotive history to a car show. This vehicle is as important in U.S. auto
history as the Thunderbird, Corvette, Mustang and Camaros that populate these
shows and they are going to have move over and give me some room.

As for the Liberty. I'am glad that it seems to be doing well in the market place
and the automotive press seems to like it. Motor Trend took one into
Death Valley for its annual " Torture Test of SUV's " and they came away fairly
impressed. I would like to hear from real owners that have taken their Libertys
off road. Camp Jeep 2001 was a couple of weeks ago and from what I have
heard it was very wet and muddy this year. I did some of those trails last year
and am curious how the Libertys did. If you are a Liberty owner and you did
some trails at this years Camp Jeep lets hear from you. Unlike some of my
fellow posters on this page I have an open mind when it comes to the Liberty
( to each his own ).
