For those of you interested in swapping out your current engine with a diesel, 4WheelDrive blog is reporting that you may soon have an "official" option:

The wait is almost over! Jeep Performance, a division of Mopar Performance, is working on a stand-alone diesel engine swap kit to drop the 2.8 diesel that first appeared in the Jeep Liberty into your TJ, YJ, CJ, or? While we'll have more details (and maybe a photo or two) after Jeep Safari in Moab, this is the real deal and is going to happen. Everything needed to install the diesel mill into a Jeep will come with the kit - including a stand-alone wiring harness and non-EGR motor!

The diesel is a great option to bad its not available during the build process. I think the diesel swap would not be cost effective and that anyone having one done has loades of dissposable income and $$$ is not an issue or is a true diesel fan....either way the money spent on the conversion could pay for many gallons of regular fuel...........

The way I see it, there are 5 options for a hybrid Wrangler that can (possibly) get 25 mpg or greater...

1. Current engine and transmission with a start-stop light hybrid system---probably good for 20/25 (city/highway)

2. Diesel engine and 6-spd trans with same start/stop hybrid system as above---possibly 30/30

3. Above-stated Gasoline or Diesel engine with s/s hybrid system AND some motor positioned inside of the transmission that is linked directly to the output shaft that can provide hybrid power that can propel the vehicle 40 miles in EV mode, or 100 mpg for the first gallon as a heavy-hybrid, and 35-40 mpg each gallon thereafter.

4. Diesel engine coupled to a hybrid hydraulic transmission that eliminates the conventional transmission in favor of an impeller and hydraulic motors, with a s/s mild hybrid. E.P.A. tests showed 40-45 mpg combined city/hwy

5. (My favorite) Elimination of the engine and transmission in favor of a liquid-fuel reformer, and fuel cell (like the NUVERA system), large battery pack capable of 200 mile EV range, and hub-mounted PML motors for power generation and regeneration. 50-75 mpg (AFTER the batteries are exhausted)

I just heard a report on the news that oil could hit $200 per barrel this summer. If you are saying 'that will never happen', then remember that the speculators were saying that oil would never hit $100 per barrel, so I suppose anything goes.

A 2.8L CRD conversion is fine, but will it be compatible with straight Biodiesel, will it be compatible with SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil)? That would make the conversion economical and functional.

Mabye Chrysler and Jeep should be working on a hard core hybrid that uses hybrid power to increase off-road capability, and as a side benefit, just happens to get 50 hybrid m.p.g.

One step at a time HotWheels. Let's get these things up to 25mpg first shall we?
SVO or B100 would be great, but I'd settle for a B80 blend at this point.
We've got to support the infrastructure enough so that it's profitable to run the alternative fuels production.
I'm right there with you bro, they just can't keep up with us "New Fangled Thinkers".

We'll be lucky to see a plain diesel before the introduction of the Phoenix V6 engines (2010-2012) with 3 cylinder (that's right!) deactivation.

And that's only a few years away...

My take on this is that this is coming from Jeep Performance. I read a while back ablut a possible ORT type division similar to MOPAR for street vehicles. Could this be the beginning of ORT (or am I dreaming)?
I don't know where the AAV referances came in from, so I don't see why it should continue on this thread.
I would think that this 2.8L CRD 'crate' engine will be just like the 5.7L Hemi (non-MDS) from MOPAR, and as such will mate up to a couple of standard automatic and manual transmissions.
The questions I'm really interested in is the emissions and cost?
You guys are right about the 2.8L not passing 2007 emissions regs, but I've also read that the non-Bluetec 3.0L V6 in the Grand Cherokee is just as bad as the 2.8L I4. So what gives?

...2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon CRD...

The Mopar program is trying to use the T1 (military TJ) parts primarily. One of the biggest performance differences between that version and the liberty is the non-variable turbo. I haven't driven a T1, but I understand they do pretty well. The T1 version is WAY simpler, no EGR, no variable turbo, no Viscous coolant heater, no AC (I don't know what Mopar has planned for that), no cruise control, etc...It has about 1/10 the amount of wiring, and would be a great motor to have in a Jeep.

Why is the 'Arab Organization for Industrialization' symbol a rocket with the atomic orbital symbol, and is it pointing towards us in the Good Ole U.S.A.?

Anyway, here in Illinois, the swap would be legal for any Jeep older than the motor being put in...

Or, simply put, if the engine is newer than the car, than it is ok...

Will they also make the swap compatible with the 6-speed manual? Will they make it for the Liberty? (I know for a fact that the front axle cradle would have to be swapped out on a Liberty, however, that front axle cradle allows for 4 inches of lift versus the 2.5 inch limit on gas Liberty's

Regarding the 'Arab Organization for Industrialization' symbol... it is by no way pointing to the good 'ole USA ... . On the contrary it is a great cooperation between both our countries since the late '70s. It manufactures, develops & assembles loads of joint military & civilian technology. And for the part I really care about... It makes JEEPS

Emmision standards are a NON issue with aftermarket engine swaps esp. Diesles. Here in AZ they just do a smoke test and thats it! I heard Ca that Diesels are exept from a smog test?


THe CRD was dropped for many reasons including the 2007 Strict emmisions laws for Manuafactures which has nothing to do with aftermarket conversions!!

Some states are lax; some are not. In any case, the state regs have to be met or U simply don't get your states' emissions sticker (if applicaple). Here in NY, I think it would be tedious to show up with a '08 JK with a 2.8L CRD transplant and expect to get a sticker (though I know how to fanagle one, anyway!)

If aftermarket swaps are a non-issue, I'd like to install a thrust vectoring engine from an F-22 on a new JK. That way I could replace my steering wheel with a joystick. But, I'm fairly sure I wouldn't pass the emissions test.

Does this sound plausible? The 2.8 VM Motori CRD was dropped because it couldn't meet 2007 emission standards, even with an EGR. How is it now going to be legal without an EGR? Something doesn't sound right, here.

Since the new ULSD & reduced diesel emissions reqts went into play, I don't know what the engine swap legal "rules" are.

As I recall, the 2.8LCRD was dropped, at least in part, because it couldn't meet the new EPA reqts. So, would JEEP be limited in doing "legal" swaps only in pre-'07 vehicles?

If it's an "aftermarket" engine swap, I don't see how the emissions regs would effect it even if it went into an '07+ model.

It appears that the engine has less power, it should not be a problem to get stock oe better liberty specs
