June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year

Ouch. Despite Chrysler's best attempts to spin the news, Jeep sales continue to suck. First, the good news: The all-new Jeep(R) Patriot posted sales for June with 4,889 units, up 6 percent compared with June 2007 sales of 4,633 units. Combined year-to-date (YTD) total sales of the fuel-efficient Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot compact vehicles which each achieve 28 miles per gallon or better in highway driving, reached 114,188 units, up 18 percent from YTD 2007 combined sales of 96,553 units. It seems that their "Let's Refuel America" promotion is having some effect - they're extending it through the end of July. The full sales figures are the bad news - click through if you dare... Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year Well, I'm doing my bit to help, and am turning in my 2005 Liberty today for a 2008. In spite of Consumer Reports' Condemnation, it rides and handles better than the KJ, and appears to have the same or more clearances. I tried to look at a Subaru Forester, but I can't see it making it across the Cascade and Oregon Desert back country trails we favor. I've heard the fuel economy should be 1-2 mpg better than the old. We'll see. There's not much around in a small SUV with any capability any more, and the Wrangler is probably more than we need, and not as civilized.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year The days of the V8 are certainly not over! I would be fine with a 4.7L V8 in my TJ as it would get as good or better mileage than the 4.0L. Put in a good OD and the engine would lope along on the highway. I guarantee you would get better than 20mpg on the highway. I get 18+ now with good driving habbits!
The Corvette (V8) has been getting 25mpg for years and it's one of the highest HP and fastest production cars around.
The sad thing is that the imports are going to get more of the market share as they are better poised to mass produce low cost, high mileage vehicles. This is only going to create more problems for the big? 3.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year It seems like less and less are whining about a diesel in the wrangler now that diesel is $4.89 nationally. I will only drive diesel back and forth to work and my wrangler now sits in the garage. If they ever build it I will sell mine and get a JK. The whole jeep line up needs more effient high gas mileage motors. I am surprised that Chrysler has not borrowed TDI motors from VW and installed them in the Patriot, sebring and liberty's. DUH? Why not?

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year I am suprised that the new TDI motor isn't planned for the Jeep lineup too. Chrysler is already producing the new minivan for VW so Chrysler should expand the deal to get diesel engines from VW. The new TDI engine is 50-state legal and passes the toughest emissions standards in California.
EPA estimates the new Jetta TDI to get low 40's for combined fuel economy. VW and other's on road, in traffic, real world testing are showing at least high 40s.
Even with diesel costing $1 more per gallon, you still save a bit of money by going to diesel.
Consider someone who drives 12,000 miles a year (average driver).
12000miles/20mpg * $4/gallon for gas = $2400 12000miles/30mpg * $5/gallon for diesel = $2000
Diesels usually cost more to buy ($1500 more?) so -- using the above numbers -- it would take about 45,000 miles to recoup the cost of the pricier engine. Many people drive their vehicles far beyond 45,000 miles.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year I guess this probably kills all hope of getting a significantly more powerful engine in the Wranger. I bought a new Rubicon in 2003. Except for the engine, it is the best car I have ever owned. However, for several years I have been holding off buying a new one thinking that at some point Jeep will drop in an optional BIG engine. I wonder how many people like me are out there that drive a Jeep as a SECOND car and are more concerned with performance then MILEAGE?

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year I certainly hope it does. The last thing Jeep needs is a bigger less efficient engine. MY TJ gets like 15mpg in the city as it is!
The whole industry has to wake up. I would hope numbers like this would make Cerebus/Chrysler/Jeep rethink the brand and focus on getting back to the roots: Fun, off-road capable no frills etc. Big luxury SUVs, and crossovers should be sold under different brand names. V8s are going the way of the dodo. They are unnecessary for 99% of the public. Smaller diesels with tons of torque and the ability to run bio-diesel without $2000-$3000 premiums need to happen and soon.
Gasoline prices will stabilize and maybe even drop a little, giving people some false sense of security but with China and India's gas/oil needs skyrocketing (with Africa next), global demand for oil is only going to increase and so will gas prices. Big honkin engines are a dying breed whether you want to accept that or not.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year Hi ac106: I am afraid I may not have been clear in my initial post. I drive my Rubicon as a recreational vehicle. My primary car gets significantly better mileage and I use it whenever I am going any great distance or just cruising to the store and back... I fully understand that if you are using your jeep to commute to work (or if it is your only vehicle...), you will be concerned with having the most fuel efficient engine you can find. As I tried to express earlier, I wonder how many jeep drivers do NOT fall in the ONE CAR ONLY (USE THE CAR TO COMMUTE TO WORK...) category. My guess is that a large percentage of Jeep Wrangler owners are NOT like most car owners. I certainly could be wrong. However, I am betting there are a lot of Jeep Wrangler owners out there who (like me) want a “big honkin engine” in their FUN car. Please note: the big engine should be OPTIONAL. If people don’t want a big engine, they don’t have to buy it.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year tmedlock- I think we're in the minority, with everyone frenzied about fuel prices! I was hoping Jeep would offer the 4.7L-V8 305HP as a JK option. Dream on... On your 4.0L, you could always get a stroked 4.6+L engine from Golen, or bolt on a supercharger... either way, I would be happier with a 4.0L than the minivan-transplant 3.8L... Did you put an air tube, bored TB, exhaust headers & a catback on your 4.0L yet? That brings it to life... The "fuel efficiency" numbers are deceiving, and the media has stirred up too much of a frenzy, IMHO... As an example, I pay ~$80/week for fuel in my XJ (17mpg). If I had a vehicle with TWICE the efficiency, it would save me ~$40/week, or ~$2000/yr. So, if I spent $20000 on a new fuel efficient vehicle (that I'd probably hate to drive, or be seen in) the "payback" period would be 10 years. I'd rather pay the $80/week for fueling the XJ, that I love to drive... with no car payment... Of course, if gas hits $10/gallon, I'd have to recalculate... In my area, there is currently a $7000 rebate on GCs. I'm not considering a GC, but that's pretty amazing...

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year EXACTLY!!!! Sure, the cost of fuel sucks, but it's nothing compared to the payment on a hybrid-anything. I'll stick with my LJ and just drive less, walk more. Life goes on... Seems to me this all happened in the 70s too and we got through it.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year That is a ridiculous comparison. The 1973 oil crisis which led to long lines and price increases was a result of an embargo from OPEC members due to the Arab-Israeli War.
While OPEC could release more oil, current prices are due more to global demand and speculation among other factors. India, China and later Africa are going to drive global demand indefinitely. They need oil to develop into 1st world nations.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year Acc. to the "Xperts": lotza factors involved here... the oil speculators, India, China, US consumption, lack of US refining capacity, US oil monolpolies (only 5or so ? oil conglomerates controlling pump prices), lack of supply, etc... Start drilling offshore (AND EVERYWHERE ELSE) and build some refineries (whether U want them in your backyard, or not!) and the supply-demand model will take over and prices will plummet. The more we delay the ineviatable & let the Granola-bar Lobbyists whine about our friggin' "carbon footprints" [JEEZ!] ...the more we'll pay... ...While RFK Jr, John Edwards, & Al Gore circle the globe in luxurious private jets & Escalade motorcades... Ohhh, sorry, didn't mean to let hypocritcal politics creep into here...

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year $20,000 to $30,000= Lots of repairs on my 98 XJ with 273,000 miles
MPG + Torque # don't mean anything to me if the vehicle isn't reliable. I still drive my XJ 100 miles to and from work 5 days a week.
We took my wife's WJ to Colorado on a 2500 mile round trip. We averaged close to 21 MPG. Not Prius #'s, but neither could the Prius go some of the places the WJ went.
Conserving oil is only providing China and India with additional fuel. That being the case, we might as well enjoy ourselves in OUR Jeeps and leave the anti-recreationists scratching their heads.
BTW, the article on the algae biodiesel is interesting.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year Yessir! I'm with ya... BUT, I ALMOST folded & got a GC with the 4.7L & a "Tiptronic" type +/- autostick. I do HATE autos, but ~305HP/334ft-lbs with ~$2500 off (Afffiliate disc) & $7000 off (rebate) is very hard to pass up... Add in my XJ with 142Kmiles for ~$3000 off (maybe...) & I'd walk out with a brandy new $34K-stickered GC for ~$21.5K. Ooohhh-weee, that bends me just a little... ...I'm still fighting it... My XJ actually seems to have more interior space & cargo room... Somebody STOP ME from grocery-getter mediocrity!!!

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year MarkH, "Somebody STOP ME from grocery-getter mediocrity!!!" While the new JGC is a little too big for our needs, my wife's 2001 WJ did just fine on the trails in Colorado. It's far more than a grocery-getter--even if it is a step child to our beloved XJs ) We're looking at possibly a new gen Liberty as a replacement for when the XJ goes to the Heep of Jeeps in the Sky.

Re: June Jeep Sales Down 40% From Last Year That's just my sarcasm... My perception comes from seeing far too many GCs getting loaded with groceries & crying rugrats than on trails... (i.e., as opposed to XJs & Wranglers, of course...) In reality, I would certainly take the GC over any other in its ("GG") class for off-road capability... IMHO: --The rear cargo space in the GC appears far less than in the XJs. Up close & side-by-side with my XJ, it doesn't seem that "big" to me. (The new ones ~MY10 are supposed to be bigger!) With a $7000 rebate, it's hard not to reconsider it as an option! --The new Libertys should really be called Cherokees in the U.S. Many similar visual queques. If I buy a Liberty, I'm definitely sending to England (maybe Canada?) for all the "Cherokee" placques and replacing them. That should keep some guessing, here in the U.S...
