Automobile Magazine announced its 2003 Reader's Choice All-Stars.

Automobile Magazine, America's leading automotive lifestyle publication, announced today its 2003 Readers' Choice All-Stars. Chosen by the four million readers of Automobile Magazine, the award winners represent the best cars and trucks sold in America.

"Our readers have keen insight into quality in the automotive field," said Automobile Magazine Publisher David Forgione. "Automobile Magazine is truly a reader's magazine, and we place a great deal of value on the Readers' Choice All-Stars. These awards symbolize the knowledge and devout loyalty of each and every one of our readers."

In each January issue, Automobile Magazine publishes a ballot form asking its readers to vote for the best vehicles in 14 categories. The results of this survey are published each May as the Readers' Choice All-Stars.

This year, the honors went to vehicles from BMW, Chevrolet, Infiniti, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Land Rover, Mini, Porsche, and Volkswagen. Following is a list of the All-Star winners in the SUV cateogories as well as some incisive commentary from the readers of Automobile Magazine:

  • Best Large Sport-Utility Vehicle: Land Rover Ranger Rover - "The Hamptons version of a mobile home." - Alex Kravets, New York, New York
  • Best Mid-Size Sport-Utility Vehicle: BMW X5 - "Even Keith Bradsher would sing its praises." - Brian Wright, Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Best Small Sport-Utility Vehicle: Jeep Liberty - "A great interpretation of the original SUV." - Joe Paul, Winter Park, Florida
  • Best Pickup Truck: Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra - "The ruggedness of John Wayne, the integrity of Jimmy Carter, and the soul of Johnny Cash.  An American hero." - Joe Rodriguez, San Francisco, California

Keith Bradsher: Former Detroit bureau chief for The New York Times, Bradsher won the George
Polk Award in 1997 for his reporting on SUVs and light trucks. He's infamous for exposing the inherent danger of SUV's, and has drawn comparisons to Ralph Nader's work in the late sixties. His reporting has underlined the inherent problem of a populace that has embraced trucks, but not the fact that these vehicles are trucks and thus shouldn't be driven with the expectations derived from cars. This problem has been fostered by automotive companies selling "car-like" qualities in vehicles that aren't cars. The man is persona non grata in Detroit, and his reporting was pretty damning. For truck enthusiasts, the prevailing reaction was "duh."

You bring up an interesting point... isn't the BMW X5 in the same category? They X5 and Liberty are basically the same size (as are the Mercedes and the Freelander offerings). Why is the Liberty "small" and the X5 "mid-sized?" Admittedly this is tangential to the requisite Liberty-bashing, but I was curious about the classifications.

well if you look at the story in the bigger picture, this was bount to happen. Jeeps had a long running of award winning vehicles. (Cherokee, G.Cherokee, Wrangler, ect.) Even though the competition isnt that great, i dont see why i even doubted Jeep. yeah i know, the Liberty still isnt "hardcore" but it is a good car when you use it in its designed perameters. it is a light off road vehicle, that is mostly designed to go on road. Think of the Wagoneer, some of them had IFS and really the only offroad feature was 4wd. AMC advertised it as a "safety feature" and not really as an offroad perk. Back then, if you wanted to get a jeep you could wheel in, youd get a Cherokee or a CJ.

Considering the competition in that class I would have to agree with the readers choice.
