CompassAutoWeek Trashes Compass

Just like everybody else who has an opinion, Autoweek can't think of any reason to keep the Compass around:

Chrysler wants to pare its model lineup, and the most frequently cited example of why is this Compass. We can't think of a better candidate to disappear. Well, maybe the Aspen. Or the Nitro. Gee, it's kinda easy once you get started, isn't it?

Anyway, this Caliber-in-disguise is better to drive with the five-speed manual than the last one we tested (which used a CVT). It cruised along fairly quietly on the freeway, and it wasn't so coarse and buzzy around town--all because we got to choose how hard it revved and when. But it rides and handles like the too-tall econobox it is. If this is the driving experience you want, you're better off shopping a PT Cruiser or Chevy's HHR, both of which offer more utility.

 Where they sell these things anyway?
Where can you actually buy these things?

I've been to nearly every Jeep dealership within 150 miles of here, mostly looking for any scrap of info from managers on whether they were going to build a truck eventually, and nobody carries the Compass. I was in the market for a small 4 door commuter car after the Comanche bit it and was looking at everything in general. There's plenty of Calibers but no Compasses to be found anywhere, I've yet to see one in person.

So I dont know where they are selling these things but it certainly isnt southern Colorado, northern New Mexico. I wonder why manufacturers always decide to exclude geographical areas for selling certain vehicles. My friend and I had a pretty good side business going on because Subaru was doing the same thing, they did not sell the Outback in places like Florida where people did not "need" 4WD rally type cars. We would buy used ones here and drive them to FL where he was from and get mobbed by onlookers who'd never seen one and sell them at practically the first place we stopped to eat in FL, then fly back with 3-$7K profit for the weekend. Thank you Subaru for not realizing ppl will drive anything for image alone whether they "need" a 4WD or not

The Compass had potential, until they made it into the crossover that it is. If they had built the 2002 Compass concept instead of the diluted one we have, I think it would have been more acceptable as a Jeep.

Still, my wife wants one. It's good enough for what she needs, so we might pick up a used one in a few years.

Can we go ahead and put the dang thing out of its bobble-headed misery? It makes me sick. The whole "We don't wanna build a Jeep pickup because it would eat into the sales of a dodge pickup..." never crossed their minds when it comes to hatchbacks. Flocking bastiges. Why weren't they worried about the Comp-ass eating into Caliber sales? We never would've begrudged them that.

So... Jeep... Cerberus... or whoever is listening... if we're going to step beyond SUVish vehicles in the line-up can we do the sensible thing and build a pickup (or two) and put this one under the guillotine?

Please?

Umm... Is there anyone that likes this thing? I can say that I drove one at Camp Jeep on their Compass X course which was a gravel then dirt road with a few "potholes" in it.

I wanted to see what I could do and I scared the crap out of the "passenger" Jeep marketing guy when I broke it loose on the gravel so bad that the traction control seemed to just give up.

Would I own one? Not knowing that I can get a Patriot on the same platform with the same options.

Chrysler....Kill it now. It's an abberation that should have never happened. One of the post's had it right, this thing looks like they hired the entire Aztec design team.
