WranglerCompetition for the Wrangler - From Ford
Posted by mike on 2000/8/6 23:00:00 (266) reads

It looks like Wrangler will have a direct competitor beginning in 2003 - check out this article from Yahoo news.

Ford Motor Co. product designers are creating a convertible four-wheel-drive vehicle to challenge the Jeep Wrangler.

The new vehicle is expected to debut in 2003 as a 2004 model and share a chassis with the redesigned Ford Ranger pickup, which is set to go on sale in 2002.

"It will be interesting to see Ford take on the image of the Wrangler," said Jim Hall, an analyst with AutoPacific, a Los Angeles-based automotive research firm.

Ford spokesman Ray Day declined to comment on the new SUV, other than to say the company has some exciting products in the pipeline.

Wrangler's lineage traces back to military vehicles used during World War II. With its flat windshield and sparse interior, it offers no-frills transportation in an age of heated seats and satellite navigation systems.

Last year, DaimlerChrysler's Jeep division sold nearly 90,000 Wranglers, up 6.3 percent from 1998. And the vehicles boast some of the highest owner-loyalty rates in the industry.

"I think there is a definite market out there," said Bill Demmer, president of Jack Demmer Ford in Wayne. "Just look at the resale value of the older Jeeps. It's just one more niche they are trying to fill."

Other automakers - most notably Suzuki with the Samurai and Sidekick - have tried to capture Wrangler's appeal with limited success.

"We are well aware of the competitive landscape," DaimlerChrysler spokesman Jan Zverina said. "I don't think anyone here wants to give up one inch of our competitive advantage."

In a completely unrelated story, check out this article about a Wrangler and Dodge Ram that had to be saved by a Hummer while stranded on the side of a 12,000 foot mountain in Colorado over the weekend.

here is my comment
I bought a 2000 Wrangler Sport w/auto, air and 2 tops. What a piece of crap. The mileage doesn't even come close to the EPA sticker, the engine knocks, the transmission hesitates badly between 1st and 2nd, the torque converter constantly jumps in and out of lock and to add insult to injury, the air conditioner compressor grinds and rattles so loud that I have seen heads turn going down the street.

The dealer and factory both state "normal".

The only car that has been worse was a 1971 Pontiac.

My last two cars was a german car and the best car I ever had is my current Toyota.

My wife tried to tell me not to buy Detroit but I thought Detroit had learned their lesson when the Japanese almost wiped them out. I was sadly mistaken. I will never buy Detroit again.

So as a former Aerstar owner, I don't care what Detroit comes out with, from now on, I will only buy Toyota.

The best part about them getting stuck in our state was that they're from Texas.
"Which way y'all" is heard way too often on our slopes. It seems the signs didn't answer that question for them.
Aside from the irony, with fine books on 4-wheel trails, there isn't enough time for the average person to travel all of Colorado's trails in five years. There are such spectacular climbs and challenges on marked trails that there really is no reason to stray. Bad decision

I really don't know much about the mechanics of Ford's Jeep wanna be but i know jeep could be in real trouble depending on the mechanics of their next wrangler. I have heard that the next wrangler will have that God-forsaken IFS that the new next generation car-ute Cherokee will have. Unlike the suzuki with their sammari, ford is a big company with big customer base. If they come out with a great off roader with the no frills attitude of the Wrangler it could be real competition. They are definately coming in at the right time because there is going to be a outcry for a real offroader when the new (cringing as i type this) IFS wrangler comes out and Ford can come in and snatch up a large amount of prospective wrangler buyers that are somewhat irate because of Jeeps shoddy decision on loosing the solid axle. I fear that Jeep and their new up and coming vehicles aren't going to persuede previous jeep owners to buy again, unless of course they are the soccer moms in the two wheel drive cherokees and grand cherokees.

These are just the kind of idiots that are ruining off road trails and causing closures. They should be banned from ANY and all off road trails. The authorities should have drained all the fluids and left the vehicles there as punishment. Just another argument for the pro closure establishment. Just glad nobody got injured or killed because of their stupidity!

here is my comment: THE FINE IS NOT ENOUGH. GUYS LIKE THOSE RUIN THINGS FOR THOSE OF US WHO "TREAD LIGHTLY" AND ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF THE SAN JUANS. THE ROADS ARE THERE FOR THAT REASON, MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE TO HELP GROOM SOME OF THE LOWER ROADS.
THAT SHOULD GIVE THEM SOME TIME TO THINK.
