Rubicon and Grand Cherokee Reports and Rumors

The Wrangler Rubicon is selling better than expected and the future of the Grand Cherokee.

We've recevied several reports from readers over the past few days regarding the future of the Grand Cherokee. Our first report comes from a reader with information about possible sales incentives for current Grand Cherokees as well as what the future may hold for the next-generation...

The current Jeep Grand Cherokee will be discontinued in November, and they (DaimlerChrysler) have authorized a major program that will include promotions, and discounts. Possibly 0% APR for 60 months, and a lower standard payment.

The 2003 (editor's note - we believe it will actually be the 2005) Jeep Grand Cherokee has been speculated to look like the Mercedes truck... not the G-Series. The ML 55.

Another reader sent us some info regarding the 2004 Grand Cherokee:

The 04 WJ will be an early launch with no big changes other than electronics. The 05 will be a [codename] WK and all new.

We've received numerous report regarding the next-generation Grand Cherokee, and it's pretty much all over the map so we're not exactly sure whom to believe.

Moving on to the Wrangler Rubicon, we recently received a reader report regarding the excellent sales of this variant:

Originally quoted as 8,000 units for the 2003 Wrangler Rubicon, sources at DC Headquarters state that due to strong demand (7,000+ orders as of 10/31/02), production targets have been increase to 15,000 Rubicons for 2003, with the ability to ramp up to 24,000 units if needed to meet market demand.

We're a little skeptical of this report only because it was sent to us a few days prior to 10/31/02 - a date mentioned in the text.

Finally, be on the lookout for your neighborhood postal carrier to be driving an all new right-hand-drive postal Wrangler. Here's the scoop from another of our sources:

2003 Wrangler Right Hand Drive Postal Units will be produced again, filling the void that was left from the 2001 Cherokee. These models will be built in two periods, starting in early December 2002 to Janurary 2003, and then again in the 3rd and 4th quarters of the 2003 calendar year, if demand warrants. They will all be equipped as the 24D package- that it, the 6-cylinder Wrangler Sport with the automatic transmissions.

I hope Jeep doesn't chase this market around, at least with its core products. The crossover market's getting flooded, and I think a solid base of Jeepers who want real Jeeps will always remain.

I sure hope they keep the terrific solid axle quadra-link coil suspension, and don't go all-independent like Mercedes and Ford. The GC rides like a Buick already compared to anything I've had before. I know several people who own them, and until I told them, they assumed it had independent front suspension. I also hope they don't make it any bigger outside. Leave the size and third seat to the Durango, and let the GC remain trail-ready. I'd rather they keep something like the current format, and maybe lower the entry level price a bit. The GC has won numerous 4 X of the year awards for good reason. It works.

While it's correct that you can no longer special-order a 2003 Grand Cherokee, they will continue to make them until just before the Christmas break. The 2004 model will be on dealer lots in late February to early March. Which means (of course) that 2003 models will be on sale another 4-5 months and of course NOT "discontinued" in November.
