A long-time reader sent us this...

Have you been following the news closely?

With DCX plans to cut over 10,000 jobs in the US plants ... Chrysler brands not performing ... and worst of all with Dieter Zetsche, mentioning that "all options are being considered" for the Chrysler group, which means selling, it's a scary future for Chrysler brands. In the event of a sale, the current state of the US market, does not put GM or Ford in position to buy, since they're in bad enough shape already. So if the the other 2 Detroit big brands don't buy Chrysler ... then who will?

Educated speculation puts forward the Renault group (which also owns Nissan) as a potential buyer. Now, if you remember, when Jeep was owned by AMC, it entered an alliance with Renault in 1979, and in 1980 Renault acquired 46% stakes in AMC. This had led to the worst vehicles and had sunk AMC to an all time low.

In 1987 Chrysler acquired AMC and saved Jeep.

Now ... in another scary scenario, if Renault is not buying ... this only leaves the option of a cash rich Chinese car manufacturer who wants to set a strong foot on the US and world market.

And, unfortunately ... this sounds to me like the most likely of scenarios. Chinese Jeeps ... (Brrrrr!!) I have goose bumps & shivers just at the thought of it.

What everyone needs to remember is that even if Chysler(Chysler, Dodge and Jeep) are sold they would be sold as one unit. The consumer would not see any changes for a long time. Whoever would by them would continue to produce the vehicles as they are with the same names etc...
Even though the Chysler group may be having some rough times they still sell lots of vehicles and have some very good products. I don't see any of the three names going away as they are worth way too much. Think about it, why would someone buy the group and then ruin their investment? When AMC/Jeep was sold to Chysler product only got better. As far as I am concerned when DC bought Jeep product as gotten even better.

ok ok! hold on a minute here!! am i just an idiot or was DCx just selling the Chrysler line and retaining Dodge and Jeep. am i really the only dolt that heard it that way or are there other dolts out there too? i know that dodge and jeep are concidered to be "made by chrysler" but it just didn't seem to make sense to me to be selling all three lines like that. it would seem alot more likely that just the chrysler and dodge are going to go because they share the same platforms and everything. it would be pretty cool if the dodge trucks had a jeep nameplate on them! if DCx has a head on their shoulders they will keep the true jeep platforms and let the others go. they have great sales and show no sign of stopping.

I don't see Chysler being sold off this quick. DC has been moving to more platform sharing accross the lineup. Chysler, Dodge and Jeep all share way too much for them to be split up anyway. Jeep is about the only brand that might stand on its own but with the 08 Liberty and Nitro sharing a platform I don't see them heading in a direction of breaking up the three. Somebody mentioned Jeep and Hummer merging lines and that will never happen, they are two completly different types of vehicles that happen to be 4X4's but have a completly different customer base. Would make no sense.
I think the next big change for Chrysler will come with the next gen Durango, Aspen, Grand Cherokee and Commander and M-Class. Somehow these vehicles will all be related to each other. Or the Grand Cherokee and M-Class wil be related and the the other three on a larger platform.

I'd think it would be a mistake for GM to buy Jeep, even if it came packaged with Dodge and Chrysler. GM has spent a whole lot of money on getting the H2s and H3s to market and trying to build a name for them. Acquiring Jeep would end up being a lot of duplicate effort on their part. I'm NOT a Hummer fan but general consumer reaction to them it pretty favorable. I think a smart move would be for Ford to try to buy Jeep a la carte but Ford has their own issues right now.

As far as Chinese owning Jeep, every other nation seems to have owned Jeep at one time. Might as well add China to the list. At least they're eager to make inroads into the American market and will probably do their best.

Personally, I'm more afraid of Jeeps getting reinfested with GM parts than I am of a Chinese company taking them over. Anyone who remembers the original Cherokee 6 cylinder that leaked oil from the factory probably agrees.

Right, because a POS motor from over 20 years ago is a good gauge of GM's current quality? Maybe you should check out GM's current vehicles. They're some of the best on the road now, and their motors, their truck motors anyway, are excellent.

Although Ford is in no way in a position to buy any of the DCX brands, and I kinda shudder thinking about it, I do kind of agree that if DCX was to sell off Jeep, Ford might be the best 'brand' for it to go to. It would give them something to compete with against GM's Hummer line, and Ford was one of the original manufacturers of WWII Jeeps, so there would be some historical precedence for Ford having the Jeep brand.

Ford or GM, there's not a ton of overlap btwn the jeep brand and the current offerings from either company, and the overlap that there is... well, Jeep probably shouldn't be building those types of vehicles anyway (Comass, I'm looking at you kid).

Honestly, what I'm more curious about, is what would happen to the Chrysler and Dodge brands and vehicles, specifically products like the 300, Charger, and the Ram (and the Cummins contracts that go along with Dodge).

Probably not. My initial reasoning was the 100,000 mile warranty GM is offering is a dead giveaway since no automaker has ever put out a standard 100,000 mile warranty unless they were getting beat up on quality control. The old GM 6 in the Cherokee just had too much sentimental value to ignore though.

I do have to admit the only GM vehicles I've looked at closely lately were a Pontiac G6 and a Chevy Malibu. Both left a LOT to be desired compared to their peers. The only car I liked less than the Malibu that I actually test drove was the Nissan Altima. It was really sad to see. I was a big fan of GM cars until sometime in the early 80's. Every time I'm up for a new car I give Chevy and Pontiac a look and every time I'm disappointed in what I see.

I could definitely believe that. GM's new G8 (Grand Prix replacement) should be nice though, and from what I read quality on their Corvette is excellent. GM just doesn't seem to do low-to-mid-end cars very well yet. Their upper end stuff, and their trucks/SUV's, are all quite good though. Go figure.

I would have to predict that either GM would acquire the JEEP division, or Daimler would hold onto it and sell off everything else in the Chrysler division.

If GM acquired JEEP, they could keep the Cherokee/Commander and Wrangler 2/4 door, and kiss off the Liberty and compass/patriot platform.

I would like to see an LS-1 Wrangler Unlimited...Even the GM high-feature v-6 has the 3.8 beat in HP

granted about the "blanket statement".

I had looked into the Chinese 2500 XJ and looked into ways of obtaining the body parts to spruce up the looks of a 95 XJ.

On another front, today I have spoken to a friend & top executive at DCX here and he's confirmed that "all options are on the table" and that DCX is already holding secret talks with multiple counterparts, among them Chinese. .
He also mentioned that in the event of a sale the Chrysler brands would be split up.... Jeep being sold separately.

This does not preclude the end of any on-going or future cooperations on the technical level.

IMHO ... I say let's (us jeepers) buy Jeep. At least we understand the brand & its' philosophy and we'd listen to what jeepers want & give it to them. It will be Jeeps by the people & for the people.

Again, this is only speculation...GM and DCX are talking about a global alliance, not unlike what DCX already has with the world engine.

GM and DCX cooperated on the NV-4500 manual transmission a few years back, and have had joint engineering discussions on things like hybrid transmissions and fuel cell developoment...mabye they are looking to make partnerships like these more formal and more involved.

DCX is already mating a Nissan CVT trans to a VW Golf 4 cyl diesel in the (export) caliber.

Let's face it, with as many fish in the same pond, and the pond getting a little cramped, we are going to see more alliances like this, and hopefully, JEEP will benefit rather than suffer from it.

The Jeep employees should seek financing to buy the Jeep brand. After securing the brand cut the # of models and reinforce what the Jeep brand stands for. Seek a tariff on foreign made suv's to encourage people to buy the brand. Harley Davidson employees did this and it worked out well for them. I strongly believe that Jeep needs to get away from DCX if it's going to survive as a leader in offroad inovation.

Nissan/Renult has their own problems...Toyota would be the only buyer and the FTC would not allow it. There is no sale of chrysler group...

Released in 1984, the XJ Cherokee was developed by AMC during the early '80s after the Renault acquisition. It had a 17 year run until production was halted in 2001. I'm not sure a "bad" vehicle would have a 17 year run and be loved by so many. Hell, it's still produced & sold in China to this day:

I've seen that 2500 before. What a sharp looking vehicle it is! I wonder how many of those "Cherokees" would be sold over here if they were available?

Am I mistaken, or did I read that the 2500 was only 2wd?

Man! is the grass always greener on the other side of the ocean? I think that Chinese Jeep looks great. I haven't seen it before like some of you others. I think the exterior looks pretty nice, I don't mind the "fan" grill they put on this one. I love the fact that it is only available with a manual transmission and and it does have both 2x4 and 4x4. I think the most noticeable difference between this version and the ones stateside, is the interior looks great. There is a high seat back in the rear, and the entire front looks very clean. I would like to see Jeep be owned by an American company tho.
