TheToledoBlade.com is running an interesting article about the next-generation Liberty and the possible direction the design will take. The article begins by comparing the Commander to the Cherokee, and how many people were disappionted by Liberty's "softer" lines. Here's a snippet:
What the Commander's sharp edges means for the curvier Toledo-made Liberty, which unlike the Cherokee has a larger following among female buyers than male, remains to be seen. The Liberty is to redesigned and be produced at Toledo Jeep Assembly Plant in 2007.Click here for the entire article.
The Liberty admittedly is more "expressive" than what most Jeep fans thought would replace the Cherokee, but some of its distinctiveness will be retained, Mr. Sgalia said.
"I don't think anyone will be disappointed when they see the [redesigned] Liberty," he said.
The redesigned Liberty likely will be larger than the current model to appease customer complaints about roominess but probably will keep softer lines, said auto analyst Rebecca Lindland of Global Insight Inc., an economic analysis firm in Lexington, Mass.

![]() If i am not mistaken the current liberty was initially intended to be bigger but it would have been to simmilar to the WJ in terms of size. now there is a new GC then the liberty can be made bigger.

![]() I like the KJ size as it is, though when we needed a bigger Jeep we had a WJ. It's very nimble around town and on the trail. A little more square would be nice. The styling was slow to grow on me. Ours is only 4 months old, after 3 XJs and one WJ. We finally had our first off-road test and it seems to work as well as the WJ, you just have to watch the low spot under the transfer case. The 5 speed tranny and SelecTrac work great together in low range as well as high, much smoother than our previous Jeeps.

![]() I can't imagine the KJ being much larger. I would agree that a few inches hip room and a few more inches in the trunk would be nice, but if you go much larger then you'd have the Liberty competing against the already redesigned Grand?
Being a guy who owns a KJ, I would like to see the lines of the KJ made more square. I will add that I've been very pleased with what my KJ can handle so far and with the added space I got. |

![]() As I remember it the original Grand Cherokee was supposed to be a replacement to the XJ Cherokee but the Cherokee kept selling so well they chose to produce both.
I don't think they ever figured the XJ would be around for nearly 20 years. We all just hoped that it would be replaced with something similar. |

![]() The Liberty was not originally slated to "replace" the Cherokee. Chrysler had planned to ADD Liberty to the existing lineup --but-- after the DCX "merger" some execs felt they had to cut something, and that something was the Cherokee. It was cut a few years earlier than originally planned --due to so-called "declining" sales. Only after that decision was the Liberty touted as the soft-lined "replacement" to the Cherokee... but that was not the case. Now it looks like we have the real "replacement" to the Cherokee, the right-angled Commander. Hallelujah! Death to wind tunnels!!
