WranglerWrangler Reviews

There's a lot of reviewing going on - and it's all about the Jeep Wrangler. Thanks to everyone who sent us in a link - here's what we've got so far...

Rockcrawler.com: "Only now, it's more up-to-date looking, drives like it was built during the 21st century and comes in two sizes. The Wrangler still rocks."

JP Magazine: "We have to admit to not being fans of the flenders at first, but then we realized just how much damage and abuse they could take without transferring it to the sheetmetal. The breakaway clips work great, and a brief introduction with a plumber’s torch at the end of the day returned them to their original shape, or close to it."

Edmunds.com: "For one, the engine is gutless. It revved smoothly up the first highway grade, but when a 3-year-old toasted his sippy cup to us as his mom blew by in her minivan we knew there was a problem. Subsequent track tests confirmed the Wrangler's laziness as our six-speed tester posted a 0-to-60 time of 9.7 seconds. The Nissan Xterra completes the same sprint a full 2 seconds faster and it's 134 pounds heavier." (article also includes 3 minute video)

AutoByTel.com: "As for the Wrangler Unlimited, well – there’s never been a four-door Wrangler before. And this is gonna hurt, I know it, but here it is: driving around Lake Tahoe, we rolled down the window at the light, got the attention of a good ‘ol boy in a beat up old Chevy truck and asked – whatcha think? He tugged on his cap, screwed up his face, and said the words Jeep fans loathe, "It looks like a Hummer wannabe. Is that really the new Wrangler?"

 Wrangler minivan engine
So, they added ~300# and changed to a minivan engine with approx the same HP/ft-lbs instead of bumping to a ballzy NEW powerplant with 250+HP & 275+ ft-lbs, and the reviews are starting to come in saying the "ooomph" is marginal... Hmmmm...

Don't make me say it, don't make me say it, DCX!

I can't hold back; it hurts...

I T-T-TOLD YA SO!

There, that felt better...

202HP is so UNinspriring!

So, DCX, what's the next option?

Okay, to my understanding, the 3.8L is a Cast Iron Block. The 4.0L V-6 is an aluminum block. Don't Jeep people want durable strong engines in their cars? Maybe this is why DCX went with the 3.8L.

Just my $0.02

I've been reading all of the reviews regarding the JK. To me it looks like the electronic sway bar disconnect is standard on the Rubi. Is this right, or is it an option?

From Edmunds:

"The Jeep Wrangler will remain a niche player"

Awesome quote by the Autobytel review:

It makes us laugh just writing the words.
Why Jeep decided to stick a thumb in its own eyeball and sell such a two-wheel-drive vehicle is flabbergasting. It’s all about sales, and selling more Wranglers is a good thing – or is it, when they’re two-wheel-drive? But no matter. The company may have no choice, such are the pressures of today’s mid-size SUV market. But you have a choice: you can pick the wider Wrangler with the longer wheelbase that is significantly improved on pavement and inside the cabin, with new materials, controls and more room. The one that is safer and more refined, but still rugged enough climb the Rubicon Trail. Or you can save a little money and drive around in an SUV that wears a seven-slot grille, yet can’t make it’s way past a corn stand.

It’s your choice. But is that really a choice at all?

They also mentioned about the relative lack of "punch" of the engine. They need to put the Nitro R/T engine in this thing standard for '08 at the latest.

Well Edmunds is downgrading the JK because it can't go fast? Umm... this isn't a sports car. It needs to crawl rocks which from the rockcrawler.com and JP articles it appears to do just FINE!

And I though the Nitro engine wasn't used because of where the torque kicked in.

 Re: Wrangler Reviews
The comments about the "gutless engine" and being blown off by a mini-van should alert the Jeep Program Management folks to the fact that people will expect more from the new Wrangler than the 3.8L can deliver. What about the the 4.7 V8 with the ethanol flexibility?? At least in the upscale Sahara and Rubicon models. The problem with the 3.8 is the anemic torque curve. The new Wrangler has almost "all the right Stuff".

Amen to that! Why didn't they put the new 250 hp engine from the Dodge Nitro (twin to the Liberty) in the Wrangler. I guess I'll wait to trade in my 05 Pathfinder (270 hp) for a Wrangler with a high torque diesel, when Chrysler corporate beancouters approve it.
