Wired Magazine has published an blog entry about the new Bluetec engine:

The soon-to-be-released 2007 Mercedes-Benz E 320 Bluetec is billed as the cleanest diesel ever, but it produces too many emissions to be sold in five states.

The sedan is the first of 10 models expected to use the Bluetec common-rail direct injection engine, and the vehicles include an aftertreatment process to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. However, that still was not enough to meet the regulations of California, New York, Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont, according to Edmunds.

So, what will the new Grand Cherokee CRD use? Low sulfur diesel or Ultra low sulfur diesel?

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD will use ULSD, as required by U.S. law. It is slated to be filled with "B5" (biodiesel, commonly soy-based) straight from the factory... starting 1Q07...

 Got Diesel? Be very careful what you wish for!
Anyone with a diesel using the current LSD (aka S500) or contemplating buying a '07+ diesel that now REQUIRES ULSD (aka S15) should heed the information contained in the links & pdf files below.

If you're not careful, the transition from S500 to S15 will NOT be painless...

Hey, I'd LOVE a diesel in the Wrangler, too, but...

This may exactly be the reason why DCX has said "never say never, but right now were not doing it" to the Gladiator. Nearly everyone asked for that truck to be a diesel, and they could very well be waiting until there is universal acceptance of urea injection systems so they can ensure that they are building a vehicle for all 50 states.

Wait a minute. Is this old news that site is just discovering? The 2007 Bluetech was not going to have SCR and was reported from the beginning it would not be sold in the 5 states. The engine was ready for SCR and when ULSD was fully up and running it SCR would be implemented and submitted for approval for 2008 and beyond for all states, which hasn't happened yet..


That article made it sound like the SCR equiped vehicles were failing emmisions or SCR was ruled a no no by Carb. I think this is the same info we had at the time of the Bluetech press release months ago and does not speak to anything new. Am I right?????

Crappy ass journalism!! They don't say whether they ruled on the technology of SCR urea injection. There is no way these cars actually failed the test with SCR in place. These things are already in use meeting euro 4 regs overseas. DCX are not total idiots. I'ts not like they would not know exactly what the cars put out before a test. It has to be them not approving SCR.

Volvo, Mack and Detroit Diesel are all going to use SCR to meet 2010 regs in class 8 trucks everywhere!

Screw you CARB! All for less pollution but the rest of the country is not CA and we should all be running biodiesel because the benefits are about zillion to one to the cons.

Why they are so afraid of SCR going bad or being tampered with astounds me. People already rip out emission equipment now but what is that like .01 percent of all cars? People putting the right amount of air in their tires would effect emissions 100000000 times more than the people that mess with the equipment. Why not make automatic tire inflation a rule? Hippocrits.

This is rediculous. If I recall correctly, the Blue-Tec was touted as being 50-state legal when introduced in the Blue-Tec Grand Cherokee concept. Is this not the same Blue-Tec technology? Will the deisel Grand have the same restrictions? A Massachusetts resident, the deisel Liberty also was not emissions legal here - what is going on?

One problem is that the EPA has not approved the Urea-based system that would scrub out much of the nitrogen. The BlueTec system as tested and not approved in these states therefore does not include the urea system and instead relies on older existing systems, which aren't as effective.
