LibertyLiberty CRD Review in Chicago Sun-Times

The Chicago Sun-Times ran a mostly positive review of Jeep Liberty CRD over the weekend:

The Liberty Diesel provides decent performance in town, but could use another 50 horsepower (couldn't we all?). The 0-60 mph figure for this 4,296-pound Jeep is average at 10.1 seconds and 65-75 mph passing is lazy with just a driver aboard.

The Liberty Diesel isn't as quiet or refined as many European diesels. It suffers from the mild clatter and vibration of older diesels and briefly emits smoke after being started. The Jeep folks blame the noise partly on the fact that the diesel has large cylinders that create lots of noise and that the engine sits close to the passenger compartment.

While the Liberty Diesel isn't very fast, its turbocharged engine holds its own in city traffic and works well with its automatic transmission. That unit smoothly upshifts and downshifts and allows easy highway cruising.

The Liberty feels solid as a rock and has good steering and decent handling for a rather high SUV, although body lean is noticeable when swiftly taking curves. The firm suspension provides an acceptable ride on most roads, and the Liberty has impressive off-road abilities.

Extra effort is needed to get in, but passengers sit high. However, the front seats should be larger and offer more side support. And the large front console eats into occupant room. Also, a tall driver will wish his seat moved back farther. There's decent room for four 6-footers, although knee room gets tight behind a driver who shoves his seat all the way back.

I agree with the reviewer's comments: the Diesel engine in the Liberty is very unrefined. I'm looking forward to the much more refined MB Diesel in the JGC CRD. But, DC, please add DHS to the JGC because without it the skip pad score is abysmal. Also, I hope that Bio-Diesel fuel becomes much more readily available so we don't have to be so dependent on the Saudis.

The article says "isn't as quiet or refined as many European diesels". The CRD used in the Liberty is a European diesel, being designed in Italy.

Regardless, the engine will be replaced by another diesel in the next generation Liberty (as the current diesel apparently won't pass strict new diesel emissions standards that take effect in 2007).

Currently DCX has a 2.0L, a 3.2L, and a 4.0L which will all pass the new emissions standards. The 2.0L only generates 134hp which would probably make it a bad choice for a vehicle sized like the Liberty. The 3.2L is rumored to be used in the 2007.5 Grand Cherokee and Commander (whether this comes to the US is not 100% confirmed yet). So will the 3.2L end up in the Liberty or will DCX come up with an all new CRD option?

it would be great if Chrysler was the first US auto maker to have more than one or two diesels in its portfolio. But isn't the engine in the GC crd a 3.0 similar to the one used in the Bluetec concept? Also is the 4.0 that you are reverring to the new twin turbo V8 that produces 325 hp and 550 lb/ft of tq?

The 3.2L is a little newer, and a little bit more refined. They both have about the same performance and fuel economy numbers.

The 4.0L is the beastly V8. :D

I would like to see the Wrangler, Wrangler Four-Door, Gladiator (if it is ever made), and the Liberty eventually get the new 4.0L gasoline engine that is in the Dodge Nitro, and a 3.2L Bluetec option.

I would like to see the Compass and Patriot (if it is ever made) get the 2.0L diesel and a turbocharged version of the 2.4L global engine.

I would like to see the Grand Cherokee and Commander get the 4.0L gasoline engine, a 5.7L Hemi, a 6.1L Hemi for the WK SRT-8, and a 3.2L Bluetec paired with a hydraulic hybrid system.

A hydraulic hybrid has all the advantages of an electric hybrid without the need for environmentally unfriendly batteries and the complicated electronics. It could add over 30% fuel economy and additional torque to the already thrifty Bluetec system. This would mean that the WK and XK would be able to get over 40mpg while still generating V8-level torque. For more info on hydraulic hybrids see: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/technology/420f04024.pdf

But hey I don't work at DCX so we will just have to wait to see if they give in to my desires. :-p

i don't think we will se a hydraulic hybrid system in the GC any time soon because it generates noise and people wnt thier luxury vehicles to be quiet. but if the GC had the system it would be cool
