Grand Cherokee2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Spy Photos

The first spy pictures of the 2004 Grand Cherokee have hit the web.

One of our faithful readers recently sent us this link to an article and some photos of the 2004 Grand Cherokee (free registration  required):

http://www.themsj.com/news/241829.html

While we not posting the images here (for copyright reasons), here's a snippet of the article that accompanies the photos:

As these pictures show (or don't show—more on that in a minute), the 2004 version carries over the current model's lower-body cladding, pull-type door handles, rear hatch shape, and taillight arrangement. In the photo with two vehicles, the one on the left is a 2002 model and the one on the right is the 2004; note how similar their profiles are. In other words, don't expect any radical styling changes on the next big Jeep—other than those cool-looking alloy wheels on the prototype.

To my eye, the wheelbase on the 2004 looked longer than the current model's. Also, the camouflage was heaviest around the back quarter panels (as evidenced by the bulge and duct-tape stripes on the back). Both of these observations lead me to believe that the next Grand Cherokee will follow its GM and Ford competitors in offering a third-row seat.

Another source of ours offers this information about availability of 2003 Grand Cherokees:

the last day for us to order the 2003 Grand Cherokee is 2 PM tommorow. The factory will be down for retooling late December, and Janurary production of the 2004 models will be limited

Regarding round lights--the WJ already has round lights--quad ones (though not completely round).

how do we know that this is even a grand cherokee prototype??? i keep looking at the pictures and i dont see how the author saw that it was a jeep. the rear hatch door is the only thing that resembles a grand cherokee. like the last guy said, maybe this is a mitsubishi or some other car.

it would be really, really, really wierd to see round headlights on a WJ. who else here thinks its a bad sign that the new grand cherokee was driving around with that lexus and toyota car? could this hint that dc might be switching to IFS on the WJ too?

i recently heard that the model changes are purely cosmetic, with changes to the front grill and the rear hatch area. the production for the '03s has ended and the '04 grand will begin hitting showrooms and such in march of 2003. there are also some small changes with the interior set-up.

These spy photos look very similar to previously revealed pictures of Mitsubishi's new Endevour car-like SUV. And from what has been stated in this article, that seems very possible.

From what I have heard and read the changes to the '04 are purley cosmetic, new front and rear end sheet metal and new interior. Similar to the ZJ changes in '96. They will go into production after the X-mas shutdown and be available in early 2003. Orders for new '03's have already been closed. The vehichles in the pictures may be a newer '05 or '06 re-design.

I'm the one who brought this to Mike's attention. Because I have a background in graphic design and image enhancement, I’ve tried to enhance the pictures to find clues – especially whether or not they would be perverting yet another Jeep vehicle with IFS.

After analyzing and scrutinizing over the images for the better part of a week now, I feel like I can say with about 70% surety that the ’04 Grand will retain its live axles.

The location of what I can only interpret to be the front differential is not consistent with IFS. In addition, other parts which I believe are related to steering and shock absorbers are very similar to the existing WJ – indicating live axles.

But by no means should you take this as a perfect analysis. Like I said, I’m about 70% sure, but that means I’m also about 30% unsure.

Are the car companies getting BETTER at hiding their cars? I have seen/heard NOTHING on the 04 G/C until today. And, to think that these three lousy spy shots are all that will put me over until Janurary is very frustrating in this Internet-enabled world.

One BIG question needs to be asked- in a WSJ (I think) article posted here several months ago, discussing the acquisition by Mercedes, the article wrapped with a vieled reference to the new Grand Cherokee having round headlights like the Liberty. It's tough to see round headlights on the prototypes being driven in the photos. What do you think?
