Jalopnik recently reviewed the 2007 Compass and while they found it to be a good vehicle, they summed it up with this phrase: it's not a Jeep.
What do I mean by somewhat rougher terrain? About the only place a Compass won't be flummoxed off-road is a flat stretch of hard-packed dirt. On a short trail of light crag, lock mode felt similar to that of a standard AWD car. That is to say, woe to it on a hard, rutted doubletrack. But again, Jeep is marketing the Compass as a versatile vehicle that offers just a "piece of the Jeep experience." It is a fun vehicle to drive, with more responsive pickup than the standard Caliber. With the seating set higher than most cars', it at least offers the on-road feel of a "real" Jeep. But with an MSRP of only $15,985 -- it comes at two-thirds the cost. In the end, the Compass is a versatile car with some decent storage room that can handle run-of-the-mill snow showers with aplomb. But it's not a Jeep, so why call it that?

 Re: Compass Review$16k might sound like a deal. But, they skimped on what other manufacturers have as standard in their vehicles in this class. (stuff like a/c, power windows, locks.....) If you watch the bobblehead commercials and they talk about the low price you might note the car shown is $23k+, not quite the bargain they want you to believe. I'll stick with the Wrangler that has all I'd want without the gimmics and games.

Re: Compass Review I have to agree with SirFuego. I have been driving a Cherokee Sport all my life. Going to be out of college soon. Plan on and want a new Jeep when I get out. I don't have a lot of money to splurge on the Jeep of my dreams. But the Compass is something I'll get because I can afford it now and the gas mileage is better. Though it may not be "Trail-Rated" it is still a Jeep I intend on purchasing.

Re: Compass Review I understand completely. I'm a diehard CJ/Wrangler fan (more recently... XJ too). I can't help but recall similar cries of woe when the unibody Jeep XJ hit the market... along with its 2WD models.
Compared to the multitudes of DJ-5s that provided mail service for the whole country with 2WD... chains for snow... not to mention the other 2WD Jeep models that sprung up on occasion over the years... and the shortcomings of a 4WD Compass seem lessened... I think there's room in the brand for all these new cute utes, even though I won't buy one myself, but I sure would prefer if Jeep kept ALL their models 4WD (a la Suburu) to give the brand SOME sort of identity going forward... As long as they don't F-up the Wrangler, I think the brand identity is safe... and that remains to be seen...  |
