DaimlerChrysler built the world's largest indoor test track - for you.

A few months back we reported that DaimlerChrysler would have the world's largest indoor test track at the Chicago Auto Show. Well, the time has come - the show is open to the public from February 11-20, 2005. Here's the info from the official press release:

Those looking to do more than just slam doors and kick tires at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show will want to make sure they visit the Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge displays at McCormick Place. Test drives, unique displays, games, giveaways, live bands and more will entertain and educate consumers throughout the 156,000-square foot display.

The Chicago Auto Show opens to the public on Friday, Feb. 11 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 20.

Consumers will have an opportunity to experience the many hot new Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge cars, trucks and SUVs on a specially designed half-mile course that moves through a range of on- and off-road challenges. The Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Jeep Grand Cherokee are just three of the award-winning new products that will be available.

A variety of driving courses will highlight the characteristics of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands:

* Jeep Trail Rated Course -- includes fording a stream, maneuvering over logs and climbing a 15-foot-high hill with a 35% incline

* Dodge Truck Off-Road Course -- includes pulling heavy loads and demonstrating towing capabilities

* Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge On-Road Courses -- includes slalom course, washboard road and pothole simulation

"We know that people want to do more than just look at cars at an auto show," said George Murphy, senior vice president of Global Marketing for the Chrysler Group. "They want to experience how a vehicle handles, what its capabilities are both on- and off-road and the lifestyle that goes with the brand."

If anyone is planning on attending the show - email us and let us know how the test track was.

Have you guy's seen the dode nitro concept?
it's at the chicago auto show.. Now that looks
more boxy like the old xj cues than the liberty..
I actually think that thing looks kinda cool from the pics I have seen... www.detnews.com/autosinsider.com has some pics of it. It is based off the liberty platform.

The preliminary specs list a decent ground clearance of 9.6"

I think the vehicle will sell good. Especially if Toyota decides to drop their Synergy Hybrid system under the hood. The only negative comment I will make right now is that there looks to be quite a large blind spot in the rear quarters.

The FJ will UTTERLY ROMP, whether some people like it or not. So it has IFS, so does the Liberty, put the trd and the 6 speed and it will still COMPLETELY and UTTERLY ROMP like Jay Fiedler on a Sunday afternoon.

Kind of cool looking but it is not going to be ready for over a year as 2007 model. By then the 4 door Wrangler will be out so Jeep is not going to be left behind Toyota. Also, Jeep will have out by then the Commander, Scout, Partriot a two door Wrangler and hopefully a truck along side the Grand Cherokee and Liberty.
Jeep is going to be a real force by 2007.

WOW! That FJ thing may be the only vehicle out there that is uglier than the Honda Element! And check out the comments it is getting on autoblog from previous FJ owners. And it has IFS too.

FJ Cruiser will be 4 door (Rear ones open backwards) ......much larger then a Rav 4, more like a 4 runner only a bit shorter.

Am I mistaken, but is the FJ Cruiser a 2-dr? or do the rear doors open backwards? hmm... looks to me like its not much bigger than a RAV. Ill have the Jeep with a side of Toyota butt-kickin' capability, please!

Of course, Jeep would have even more fans if everyone had the chance to drive a Jeep off-road.

Play areas like the ones in the photos below would be sure to drive sales.

This is good marketing by Jeep. I've put my buddies and even some girls behind the wheel to go up a steep hill that they'd thought the Jeep could never make it over. THen when the thing guides itself up and over without difficulty, they really begin to understand what a TJ is capable of. That pinned-in-the-seat-by-gravity feeling is also unbeleivable the first time you experience it. Sure this is nothing for most of us, but the new guys got to get hooked somehow.

The bottom line is the more Jeeps that are sold, even if they're cute utes that water down the name, the more likely we are to have halo vehicles that the readers of this board like. As long as Jeep always offers a Rubicon-esqe open topped 2 door, I could care less if they crapped in a box and stamped the name on it. It also makes our dreams of seeing a Rescue that much closer to reality.
